While scholars of new media tend to turn their attention to the newest and latest new media phenomena, the Web is and will continue to be crucial to understanding online phenomena generally and, just as critically, providing a record of online discourse and events.’ – Steve Jones, UIC Distinguished Professor of Communication, as University of Illinois at Chicago History The World Wide Web has now been in use for more than 20 years. From early browsers to today’s principal source of information, entertainment and The much else, the Web is an integral part of our daily lives, to the extent that some people believe ‘if it’s not online, it doesn’t exist’. While this statement is not entirely true, it is becoming increasingly accurate, and reflects the Web’s role as an indispensable treasure trove. It is curious, therefore, that historians and social scientists have thus far made little use of the Web to Web investigate historical patterns of culture and society, despite making good use of letters, novels, newspapers, radio and television programmes, and other pre-digital artefacts. This volume argues that now is the time to ask as what we have learnt from the Web so far. Thor Baukhol Madsen Abstract A digital culture is expressed through digital media. This means that a part of our cultural heritage is now embodied in digital artifacts — including software. Using this as a base premise, this thesis aims to disclose and discuss the current state and future of Norwegian software preservation. In order to bring about such a discus- sion, it maps the challenges related to software preservation and evaluates the cur- rently available strategies for ensuring long-term access to locally executable digi- tal artifacts. The challenges of preserving software are discussed on the basis of a broad theoretical framework and a case study of three U.S institutions which have all implemented different frameworks for ensuring executable artifacts — namely the Internet Archive, Stanford University Libraries and the Media Archaeology Lab. - - - - - - - - - - En digital kultur uttrykkes gjennom digital medier. Dette betyr at deler av vår kulturarv nå er innlemmet i digitale artefakter — også software. The archival profession, as it is practiced in the United States today, developed with organizational records, such as those created by governments and businesses, in mind. Personal records were considered to fall beyond the bounds of archival work and were primarily cared for by libraries and other cultural heritage institutions. Since the mid-20th century, this divide has become less pronounced, and it has become common to find personal records within archival institutions. As a result of these conditions in the development of the profession, the archivists who work with personal records have had to reconcile the specific characteristics of personal materials with theoretical and practical approaches that were designed not only to accommodate organizational records but to explicitly exclude personal records.

Bez kulturních artefaktů nemá civilizace žádnou paměť a žádný mechanismus, aby se mohla učit ze svých úspěchů či neúspěchů. Internet Archive se snaží, aby internet – nové médium s velkým historickým významem – a další digitální materiály nezanikly. Komunita Internet Archivu spolupracuje s institucemi včetně Knihovny Kongresu (Library of Congress) či Smithsonian a snaží se uchovat záznamy pro budoucí generace [1]. Cíle a aktuální stav projektu Internet Archiv je americká nevýdělečná organizace 501(c)(3), která byla založena za účelem nabízet permanentní přístup výzkumníkům, historikům, vědcům, lidem se zdravotním postižením a široké veřejnosti k historickým sbírkám v digitální podobě. Společnost byla založena v roce 1996 v San Franciscu sponzorována společnostmi jako napříkla Alexa Internet a dalšími. V roce 1999 se organizace začala poměrně rapidně rozrůstat a nyní Internet Archive obsahuje texty, audio, pohyblivé obrázky (animace, filmy, televizní záznamy apod.), software, archivní webové stránky a poskytuje specializované služby pro adaptivní čtení a přístup k informacím pro nevidomé a ostatní osoby se zdravotním postižením. Mimo jiné je Internet Archive členem ALA (American Library Association). V současné době je velikost webových sbírek Internet Archivu tak velká, že jeho používání vyžaduje znalosti programování, nicméně se vyvíjí nástroje a metody, které umožní široké veřejnosti jednoduchý a smysluplný přístup k naší společné historii. Kromě rozvíjení vlastní kolekce se komunita Internet Archivu snaží podporovat vznik dalších internetových knihoven ve Spojených státech i jinde [1]. Murrell Abstract The Open Book by Mary E. Murrell Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Paul Rabinow, Chair This dissertation attempts to put anthropology in conversation with “the book.” It does so through an empirical specification of mass book digitization, the industrial- scale, retrospective conversion of books into digital form. Such mass digitization is the work of research libraries, Internet companies, non-profit organizations, national governments, and the computer scientists, digital librarians, and the lawyers and administrators who advise, encourage, and support them. The dissertation approaches mass digitization as a venue for plumbing the turbulent waters of what I consider the “contemporary book”: an arena of experimentation arising from the productive, seismic encounter of the modern book apparatus with an emergent assemblage in motion around the production, authorization, storage, preservation, circulation, and production of knowledge. By the “contemporary book,” I refer to the modern book apparatus (dispositif) as it is being worked upon, reconfigured, and called into question in the early twenty-first century. The activities of the digitizers I studied are based upon a shared conviction that the book and its institutions are “closed” and need to be “opened”: books are “inaccessible” or “locked up” by virtue of their materiality (their printedness); by the institutions that store and keep them (physical libraries); and by the state’s often misguided regulation (copyright).
