Styx and 38 Special to Rock Solomons on July 7 Styx and 38 Special to Rock Solomons on July 7 Posted by TBN On 06/16/2009 In the latest Calvert Marine Museum production, the legendary rock bands, Styx and 38 Special come to Solomons for an exclusive concert at CMM on Tuesday, July 7. Both bands have roots dating back to the 70's and have been performing in one form or another ever since. Styx will be performing fan favorites, Come Sail Away, Lady, Mr. Roboto, Renegade and more during the concert which begins at 8 p.m. Styx formed in Chicago when twins Chuck and John Panozzo decided to start a band with friend and neighbor, Dennis DeYoung in 1961. They originally called their first effort, The Tradewinds. During a year or two when Chuck Panozzo left the band to attend seminary school, the band brought in musician, Tom Nardini to teach Chuck the guitar upon his return to the band n 1964. In 1965, the group changed their name to TW4 after another band called The Trade Winds hit it big. During their college years the group added John Curulewski and in 1970 a fifth performer, James Young came on as well. The band struggled for recognition beyond its Chicago roots and in 1972 when it was signed by Wooden Nickel Record, changed the name to Styx. Even with three albums out, Styx did not go national until a single released on their second album, Lady, began to get radio play in 1975. The song hit number six on the national charts and Styx was off and running Joining Styx on stage is 38 Special. They will be singing chart toppers, Hold on Loosely, Caught Up in You, If I’d Been the One and more. 38 Special was formed by Jacksonville FL friends Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant in 1975 In the early 80s, 38 Special started commingling southern rock and arena rock stylings in their recordings and performances and launched a bunch of successful albums By the 1983, the band had three number one hits and was requested on radios across the nation. In 2007, 38 Special opened on Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank Williams Jr.'s Rowdy Friends Tour, and in 2008, the band filmed a Country Music Television Crossroads special with country singer Trace Adkins. The current lineup consists of Barnes, Van Zant, guitarist Danny Chauncey, bassist Larry Junstrom, keyboardist Bobby Capps and drummer Gary Moffatt. Get your tickets now! Tickets may be purchased by calling 1-800-787-9454 or by clicking here. This show will be three hours long and have two intermissions. This is my first time to be a Sire, but with my accent, Rich Garlinghouse, the Imperial Potentate around here, thought I’d be perfect . 2 . and, Rich, thanks for letting me do it without an interpreter. Rich says I’m the only member of the Club who pronounces his first name with three syllables. One of this genre’s pioneers, Greg Allman, believes the term “Southern Rock” is redundant. “Sort of like ‘rock rock.’” After all, rock & roll began as southern music. There’d be no rock without the blues, created in the Mississippi Delta by the original bluesmen, like Charlie Patton of Dockery Farms, and Hazlehurst’s Robert Johnson, who, legend has it, sold his soul to the devil to learn to play the blues guitar, down where Highway 49 intersects with US 61.

  • Front Men for Prog-Rock Supergroups Styx and Supertramp Bemoan Harsh Industry
Front men for prog-rock supergroups Styx and Supertramp bemoan harsh industry Thu Aug 3, 5:48 PM Roger Hodgson, right, and Dennis DeYoung look at old photographs of themselves on the set... By Cassandra Szklarski TORONTO (CP) - Today's music industry has become less human and much harsher on budding artists in recent decades, the front men for prog-rock supergroups Styx and Supertramp said Thursday as they spent the day mentoring the kids from Canadian Idol. "Young artists of today are burdened with the sad responsibility of having to be successful immediately," Styx singer Dennis DeYoung said before heading into a rehearsal studio with Roger Hodgson and the seven remaining hopefuls. "They don't have as much opportunity to grow as artists as I believe people like Roger and I did from our generation and that's a shame. I got better as I got older and, had I not been afforded the opportunity to do that, a lot of those songs never would have been written." The Chicago native said he and Hodgson hoped to impart a few words of wisdom to the young hopefuls, who range in age from 16 to 28 and already find themselves in an intense world of public scrutiny and media spotlight. The show itself has come under scorn from some members of the Canadian indie music scene, who questioned earlier this year whether the contestants are adequately prepared for the cutthroat industry. Hodgson complained of an industry that pressures artists to strive for mass appeal, in effect creating an environment that seems more focused on payback and sales, rather than artistry.

  • Capturing That Solid-Gold Nugget
Chapter 1 Capturing That Solid-Gold Nugget In This Chapter ▶ Gathering song ideas from anywhere ▶ Organizing and tracking your thoughts and inspirations ▶ Documenting your ideas his book is for everyone who shares the dream of harnessing the song- Twriting power we all have within. You’ve come to the right place if your heart keeps telling you to write a song, but your mind is uncertain as to the process of the craft or what’s required to create a really good song. You bought the right book if you’re wondering how to collect and organize your ideas. You have found the right resource if you have pieces of songs lying in notebooks and on countless cassettes but can’t seem to put the pieces together. This book is for you if you have racks of finished song demos but don’t know what to do next to get them heard. When you know the elements that make up a great song and how the pros go about writing one, you can get on the right path to creating one of your own. Unless you’re lucky enough to have fully finished songs come to you in your deepest dreams, or to somehow take dictation from the ghosts of Tin Pan Alley (the publishing area located in New York City in the 1930s and 1940s), most of us need to summon the forces, sources, reasons, and seasons that give us the necessary motivation to draw a song from our heart of hearts. Given that initial spark, you then need the best means of gathering those ideas, organizing them, putting them into form, and documenting them as they roll COPYRIGHTEDin — before it’s too late and they MATERIAL roll right out again! Have you ever noticed how you can remember a powerful dream just after you’ve awakened only for it to vanish into thin air in the light of day? Song ideas can be just as illusive.
