Styx and 38 Special to Rock Solomons on July 7 Posted by TBN On 06/16/2009 In the latest Calvert Marine Museum production, the legendary rock bands, Styx and 38 Special come to Solomons for an exclusive concert at CMM on Tuesday, July 7. Both bands have roots dating back to the 70's and have been performing in one form or another ever since. Styx will be performing fan favorites, Come Sail Away, Lady, Mr. Roboto, Renegade and more during the concert which begins at 8 p.m. Styx formed in Chicago when twins Chuck and John Panozzo decided to start a band with friend and neighbor, Dennis DeYoung in 1961. They originally called their first effort, The Tradewinds. During a year or two when Chuck Panozzo left the band to attend seminary school, the band brought in musician, Tom Nardini to teach Chuck the guitar upon his return to the band n 1964. In 1965, the group changed their name to TW4 after another band called The Trade Winds hit it big. During their college years the group added John Curulewski and in 1970 a fifth performer, James Young came on as well. The band struggled for recognition beyond its Chicago roots and in 1972 when it was signed by Wooden Nickel Record, changed the name to Styx. Even with three albums out, Styx did not go national until a single released on their second album, Lady, began to get radio play in 1975. The song hit number six on the national charts and Styx was off and running Joining Styx on stage is 38 Special. They will be singing chart toppers, Hold on Loosely, Caught Up in You, If I’d Been the One and more. 38 Special was formed by Jacksonville FL friends Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant in 1975 In the early 80s, 38 Special started commingling southern rock and arena rock stylings in their recordings and performances and launched a bunch of successful albums By the 1983, the band had three number one hits and was requested on radios across the nation. In 2007, 38 Special opened on Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank Williams Jr.'s Rowdy Friends Tour, and in 2008, the band filmed a Country Music Television Crossroads special with country singer Trace Adkins.
