Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com Who’s Writing the Hits? Q1-2012 The Top Songwriter of Q1-2012 The Top Collaborative Partnerships Of Q1-2012 The #1 Hit Club of Q1-2012 The Top Pop Songwriters of Q1-2012 All Songs & Songwriters During the first quarter of 2012 (January – March), there were a total of 98 credited songwriters involved in writing the 21 top 10 Hit Pop songs that landed on the Billboard Pop Songs Chart during the period, averaging close to 5 writers per song. Of those songwriters, 16 were involved in co-writing two or more hits, with one of them actually dethroning Max Martin as the “undisputed champion of hit songwriting” after a year long reign. That champion is Lukasz Gottwald (Dr. Luke,) who co-wrote four top 10 hits (three with Max Martin,) two of which landed at #1 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart. Close behind was Ammar Malik, Benjamin Levin and Max Martin, all of whom scored three top 10 hits during the quarter. Sub-Genre Breakdown: Dance/Club influenced Pop songs had 33 credited writers appearing on 8 songs, averaging 4 writers per song. Hip Hop/Dance influenced Pop songs had 34 credited writers appearing on 4 songs, averaging 8.5 writers per song! R&B/Soul influenced Pop songs had 3 credited writers appearing on 1 song (It Will Rain.) Other influenced Pop songs (those that didn’t fit into any of the primary sub-genre categories, such as Adele’s Someone Like You, or those that possessed a solid mix of influences) had 28 credited songwriters appearing on 8 songs, averaging 3.5 writers per song. 1 / 12 Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com *Note that there weren’t any straight-up Rock influenced Pop songs in the top 10 during Q1-2012. Additional Points To Note: There were 4 performing artists who were NOT credited as writers: Kelly Clarkson (Stronger,) Rihanna (We Found Love,) Selena Gomez (Love You Like A Love Song) and The Wanted (Glad You Came.) Snoop’s Young, Wild and Free featured more credited songwriters than any other song during the quarter (12). Two other songs that featured a large amount of credited songwriters include 5 O’Clock and Good Feeling (9 credited writers.) There was only one song that featured 1 credited songwriter – We Found Love (Calvin Harris.) There were three songs that featured just 2 credited songwriters – Not Over You, Set Fire To The Rain and Someone Like You.
