Who's Writing the Hits? Q1-2012 Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com Who’s Writing the Hits? Q1-2012 The Top Songwriter of Q1-2012 The Top Collaborative Partnerships Of Q1-2012 The #1 Hit Club of Q1-2012 The Top Pop Songwriters of Q1-2012 All Songs & Songwriters During the first quarter of 2012 (January – March), there were a total of 98 credited songwriters involved in writing the 21 top 10 Hit Pop songs that landed on the Billboard Pop Songs Chart during the period, averaging close to 5 writers per song. Of those songwriters, 16 were involved in co-writing two or more hits, with one of them actually dethroning Max Martin as the “undisputed champion of hit songwriting” after a year long reign. That champion is Lukasz Gottwald (Dr. Luke,) who co-wrote four top 10 hits (three with Max Martin,) two of which landed at #1 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart. Close behind was Ammar Malik, Benjamin Levin and Max Martin, all of whom scored three top 10 hits during the quarter. Sub-Genre Breakdown: Dance/Club influenced Pop songs had 33 credited writers appearing on 8 songs, averaging 4 writers per song. Hip Hop/Dance influenced Pop songs had 34 credited writers appearing on 4 songs, averaging 8.5 writers per song! R&B/Soul influenced Pop songs had 3 credited writers appearing on 1 song (It Will Rain.) Other influenced Pop songs (those that didn’t fit into any of the primary sub-genre categories, such as Adele’s Someone Like You, or those that possessed a solid mix of influences) had 28 credited songwriters appearing on 8 songs, averaging 3.5 writers per song. 1 / 12 Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com *Note that there weren’t any straight-up Rock influenced Pop songs in the top 10 during Q1-2012. Additional Points To Note: There were 4 performing artists who were NOT credited as writers: Kelly Clarkson (Stronger,) Rihanna (We Found Love,) Selena Gomez (Love You Like A Love Song) and The Wanted (Glad You Came.) Snoop’s Young, Wild and Free featured more credited songwriters than any other song during the quarter (12). Two other songs that featured a large amount of credited songwriters include 5 O’Clock and Good Feeling (9 credited writers.) There was only one song that featured 1 credited songwriter – We Found Love (Calvin Harris.) There were three songs that featured just 2 credited songwriters – Not Over You, Set Fire To The Rain and Someone Like You. Materialism Construction: Keyword Analysis of Bruno Mars’ Song Lyrics Arisara Thongnopphakhun Wannapa Trakulkasemsuk Thanis Bunsom King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok, Thailand Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] Received 21 January 2019; revised 26 June 2019; accepted 31 July 2019; online 30 August 2019 Abstract Music has long been an effective way to communicate to the masses, and lyrics play an essential role in delivering this communication. Lyrics may contain an ideology and influence listeners. This study aims to conduct a keyword analysis to investigate the materialistic ideology connoted in Bruno Mars’ song lyrics. The corpus of Bruno Mars’ lyrics was compiled from lyrics of 30 Bruno Mars songs in three albums released between 2010 and 2016. The corpus was then compared against the British National Corpus (BNC) to obtain a keyword list. The top 100 keywords were selected based on their statistical values for further analysis. They were classified according to their part of speech, and concordance lines of each keyword were obtained so as to discuss the representation of Bruno Mars’ songs. Materialistic concepts found in the corpus include an emphasis on, or preference for, 49 Vol. 14 No. 2 (2019) luxury objects, brand-name items, a lavish lifestyle, parties, economic power, physical appearance, and objectifying women. Keywords: Aboutness, Bruno Mars lyrics, Keyword analysis, Materialism Introduction In this age of great technological advancement, popular culture (or pop culture) is widespread. As citizens of the globalised world, it is difficult for us to escape from the influence of mass media and popular culture (Monk, Winslade & Sinclair, 2008).

  • Ava Max Could Always Envision Her Dream, She Actually Went out and Made It a Reality on Her Own
For dreams to manifest into reality, it requires more than a fairytale wish… Truthfully, it takes hustle, heart, and a whole lot of attitude. For as much as Ava Max could always envision her dream, she actually went out and made it a reality on her own. Gathering billions of streams, multiplatinum plaques, award nominations, and acclaim from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and many more, the international phenomenon projects an unbelievable personal journey into a poignant and punchy pop opus on her full-length debut album, Heaven & Hell [APG/Atlantic Records]. “Manifesting is really important to me,” she explains. “I put positive energy into my music. I know what I want to write, and there’s a story behind each song. It’s all about working hard and putting your heart and soul into it.” She started doing so as a kid. Prior to her birth in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ava’s parents emigrated from Albania to the United States. Without speaking a word of English, mom and dad held down three jobs each. However, both parents retained a passion for music. Among her earliest memories, Ava recalls her mother—a classically trained vocalist—singing opera aloud. The family relocated to Virginia where they eventually settled in their first house. Along the way, Ava clung to music, listening to Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Shania Twain, to name a few. “At a very young age, I watched my parents really struggle in America,” she admits. “It was tough, and it impacted me in many ways. However, both of them always told me if they could make it here with no language and no money, then I could make it.” While in Virginia, she dove headfirst into music with the family staunchly behind her.

The Dismantling of an Urban School System: Detroit, 1980-2014 by Leanne Kang A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Educational Studies) in the University of Michigan 2015 Doctoral Committee: Professor Jeffrey E. Mirel, Co-Chair Associate Professor Robert B. Bain, Co-Chair Professor Vincent L. Hutchings Associate Professor Vilma M. Mesa Assistant Professor Angeline Spain © Leanne Kang 2015 DEDICATION To my former students. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation was possible due in large part to my adviser, Jeffrey Mirel and his seminal study of the Detroit Public Schools (1907-81). Inspired by The Rise and Fall of an Urban School System—which I title my dissertation after—I decided early in my graduate work to investigate what happened to Detroit’s school system after 1980. Thanks to Jeff’s mentorship, I quickly found a research topic that was deeply meaningful and interesting to the very end. He and his wife, Barbara Mirel, are also patrons of my husband’s music. Jeff was the adviser every graduate student hopes to have. The completion of this dissertation would not have been possible without Bob Bain courageously jumping into the middle of a project. I was so fortunate; Bob is one of the smartest people I have ever met. He modeled a way of thinking that I will take with me for the rest of my career. His feedback on every draft was incredibly insightful—sometimes groundbreaking— helping me see where to go next in the jungle of data and theory. And always, Bob believed in me and this project.

She has received numerous music awards and nominations. In 2015, Suzanna Lubrano has released her latest solo-album ´Vitoria´. Most of the songs on the album are self-composed.
