Estrutura floral em espécies de Passiflora com diferentes síndromes de polinização. Passifloraceae Juss. ex Roussel é uma família de angiospermas com distribuição tropical e subtropical, sua reprodução pode envolver tanto sistema auto-compatíveis como auto-incompatíveis, também há casos em que pode ocorrer ambos na mesma espécie. O comportamento dos polinizadores pode ser influenciado pelas características químicas e morfológicas das flores. Dentre as recompensas ao polinizador está o néctar. Este estudo objetivou analisar a anatomia do tubo do cálice de diferentes espécies de Passiflora L., relacionando com a síndrome de polinização. Em campo foi medido a concentração de açúcares no néctar com refratômetro de bolso. Os estudos anatômicos foram realizados com amostras já fixadas, submetidas em meio de inclusão em resina plástica, seccionadas em micrótomo de rotação e analisadas em microscópio de campo claro. As concentrações de açúcar no néctar apresentaram variação de acordo com o horário de coleta. A análise anatômica evidenciou a presença de idioblastos contendo oxalato de cálcio e células com compostos fenólicos. A exsudação do néctar ocorre pela própria epiderme em Passiflora tholozanii Sacco, P. guazumifolia Juss., P. suberosa L., por meio de estômatos modificados e pela própria epiderme em P. villosa Vell., P. tenuifila L., P. caerulea L., P. actinia Hooker, P. galbana Masters, P. amethystina Mikan, por meio de papilas em P. mixta L., P. tripartita var. mollissima (Kunth) Holm- Niels. & P. Jorg., P. tarminiana Coppens & V.E. Barney. O amido esteve presente por todo o tecido secretor, antes de iniciar a secreção encontrava-se próximo aos vasos condutores. Os compostos fenólicos produzidos atuem na defesa contra a herbivoria e surrupiadores de néctar. A anatomia demonstrou que plantas com mesma síndrome de polinização apresentam característica anatômicas semelhantes. Ex Roussel is a angiosperms family with tropical and subtropical distribution, their reproduction may involve both self-compatible and self-incompatible systems, there are also cases where both may occur in the same species. The behavior of the pollinators can be influenced by the chemical and morphological characteristics of the flowers. Among the rewards to the pollinator is nectar. This study aimed to analyze the anatomy of the flower tube of different species of Passiflora L., related to the pollination syndrome. The concentration of sugars in nectar was measured in field with a refractometer. The anatomical studies were performed with samples already fixed, submitted in plastic resin inclusion medium, sectioned in a rotating microtome and analyzed under a light field microscope. The concentrations of sugar in the nectar presented variation according to the collection schedule. The anatomical analysis evidenced the presence of idioblasts containing calcium oxalate and cells with phenolic compounds. The exudation of nectar occurs by the epidermis itself in Passiflora tholozanii Sacco, P. guazumifolia Juss., P. suberosa L., by modified stomata and by the epidermis itself in P. villosa Vell., P. tenuifila L., P. caerulea L., P. actinia Hooker, P. galbana Masters, P. amethystina Mikan. By means of papillae in P. mixta L., P. tripartita var. mollissima (Kunth) Holm-Niels. & P. Jorg., P. tarminiana Coppens & V.E. Barney. The starch was present throughout the secretory tissue, before initiating the secretion was near the conducting vessels. The phenolic compounds produced act in the defense against herbivory and nectar scavengers. The anatomy evidenced that plants with the same pollination syndrome have similar anatomical characteristics. Abstract The new species Passiflora tarminiana differs from its closes relative by the character combination of very small acicular stipules and large almost reflexed petals and sepals. This species has escaped detection despite being widely cultivated. Naturalized populations, particularly on Hawa'ii, have created problems for conservation of the native flora. In Colombia it is more frequently adopted in industrial cultivation because of its rusticity and resistance to fungal diseases. Introduction Passifloras of the subgenus Tacsonia are cultivated by many small farmers, from Venezuela to Bolivia. Some species are cultivated in New Zealand. The main cultivated species is Passiflora mollissima (Kunth) Bailey (Escobar, 1980 & 1988), also called P. Coppens et al. 2000 Passiflora tarminiana 2 tripartita var. mollissima (Kunth) Holm-Nielsen & P. Jørgensen (Holm-Nielsen et al., 1988). It is called "curuba de Castilla" in Colombia, "tacso de Castilla" in Ecuador, and “banana passionfruit” in English-speaking countries.. The second species of importance in the Andes is "curuba india," "curuba ecuatoriana," or "curuba quiteña" in Colombia, called "tacso amarillo" in Ecuador (Pérez Arbeláez, 1978; A.A.A., 1992; Campos, 1992). It is most frequently found in private gardens, but some commercial growers have, because of its rusticity, started to grow it instead of the "curuba de Castilla." We describe this overlooked cultigen as a new species under the name Passiflora tarminiana, in recognition of Tarmín Campos, a Colombian agronomist who contributed with enthusiasm to the development of banana passion fruit cultivation and introduced the first author to the cultivated passifloras of the central Colombian highlands.

Sockman. iii iv General Abstract Aim The Island Rule refers to a continuum of body size changes where large mainland species evolve to become smaller and small species evolve to become larger on islands. Previous work focuses almost solely on animals, with virtually no previous tests of its predictions on plants. I tested for (1) reduced floral size diversity on islands, a logical corollary of the island rule and (2) evidence of the Island Rule in plant stature, leaf size and petiole length. Location Small islands surrounding New Zealand; Antipodes, Auckland, Bounty, Campbell, Chatham, Kermadec, Lord Howe, Macquarie, Norfolk, Snares, Stewart and the Three Kings. Methods I compared the morphology of 65 island endemics and their closest ‘mainland’ relative. Species pairs were identified. Differences between archipelagos located at various latitudes were also assessed. Results Floral sizes were reduced on islands relative to the ‘mainland’, consistent with predictions of the Island Rule. Plant stature, leaf size and petiole length conformed to the Island Rule, with smaller plants increasing in size, and larger plants decreasing in size. Main conclusions Results indicate that the conceptual umbrella of the Island Rule can be expanded to plants, accelerating understanding of how plant traits evolve on isolated islands.

Algumas espécies de Passiflora já foram analisadas citogeneticamente, mas pouco é sabido sobre espécies que ocorrem na Amazônia. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi compilar dados citogenéticos do gênero Passiflora bem como determinar a composição cromossômica da espécie Passiflora coccinea proveniente do fragmento florestal da Universidade Federal do Amazonas. Para isto, os meristemas radiculares foram pré-tratados com solução antimitótica 8- hidroxiquiloneína e fixados com Carnoy. As preparações cromossômicas foram realizadas pela técnica de dissociação celular e submetidas à coloração convencional com Giemsa. A morfologia cromossômica foi determinada com base na razão entre os braços. No presente trabalho, o tempo de pré-tratamento mais adequado foi três horas, apresentando um maior número de células em metáfases mitóticas e melhor morfologia cromossômica em Passiflora coccinea. O número diploide foi igual a 72, sendo 26 cromossomos metacêntricos/submetacêntricos e 46 acrocêntricos (26 m/sm + 46a) e número fundamental de braços igual a 98. Assim, os resultados obtidos neste estudo revelaram uma composição cariotípica inédita para a espécie Passiflora coccinea, reforçando a importância no aumento de análises cromossômicas no gênero Passiflora, essenciais para a compreensão da organização do genoma deste grupo de plantas.

Lohmann Abstract—Phylogenetic relationships of Passiflora subgenus Decaloba were examined using 148 taxa and four molecular markers: nuclear nrITS, ncpGS, cp trnL-F, and ndhF. Relationships of subgenus Decaloba to the other four Passiflora subgenera (Astrophea, Deidamioides, Tetrapathea,andPassiflora) are investigated, as are relationships among the eight supersections within subgenus Decaloba. Results indicate that subgenus Deidamioides is not monophyletic. Subgenus Astrophea + subgenus Deidamioides (section Tryphostemmatoides) together form the most basally branching lineage in the genus, followed by a clade comprised of subgenus Passiflora + subgenus Deidamioides (sections Tetrastylis, Polyanthea, and Deidamioides). Passiflora obovata (subgenus Deidamioides section Mayapathanthus) is resolved as part of subgenus Decaloba.

    Biological control of weeds in Hawaiian forests Position Paper Hawaii Conservation Alliance Position statement Biological control of weeds is an important management tool for conservation of Hawai‘i’s native forests. Although challenging to implement, biocontrol has a long history of noteworthy successes. When effective, it can provide long-term, large-scale, highly selective control of otherwise intractable weeds. Summary Invasive alien plants have caused enormous damage to native Hawaiian ecosystems and continue to threaten remaining conservation lands. A native flora formerly composed of 89% endemic species now includes over 1044 introduced plant species (Wagner et al. 1999), of which more than 100 likely are invasive in natural areas (Smith 1985). Species such as Strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum), Christmasberry (Schinus terebinthifolius), Fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum), Kahili ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum) and Koster’s Curse (Clidemia hirta) have spread across vast areas, competing with native species and altering ecosystem processes (Vitousek et al. 1987). More recent invaders such as Miconia or Velvet tree (Miconia calvescens) and Himalayan raspberry (Rubus ellipticus) now are established permanently over large areas and predicted to decrease watershed function, restrict access, and negatively impact native biodiversity. The scale of these invasions makes control of weeds using only mechanical and herbicidal techniques risky and prohibitively expensive except in small areas (Tunison & Stone 1992). Carefully chosen biological agents can provide long term weed control at an island- wide scale, including in remote areas. Hawai‘i has a long history of biocontrol Classical biological control of weeds is the deliberate introduction of exotic herbivores and pathogens to reduce population density and restrict or slow the spread of an alien plant.
