RBC Apprentice Programme

Over the past 11 years, the RBC Apprentice Programme has played a vital role in The National Ballet of Canada’s mission to attract and nurture top talent from across Canada and the world. The Programme was designed to give young dancers a way to successfully bridge the gap between an academic environment and a professional one, easing the transition to a performance-based setting. Over one to two years, the Apprentices receive dedicated classes, repertoire coaching, body conditioning instruction and performance opportunities.

This year, the RBC Apprentices performed in 22 YOU dance performances and 69 full company performances, including 15 on tour to Ottawa, San Francisco and Paris, France.

YOU dance

The National Ballet of Canada’s flagship education and outreach programme, YOU dance immerses young people of all abilities and backgrounds in the richness of dance and lays the foundation for an inclusive, reciprocal relationship with the performing arts. Many participants would not otherwise have access to live performance or experience the unique benefits that dance provides, including self- discovery, creativity, empathy and curiosity. YOU dance is free to participants and reaches young people in theatres and in their own communities through livestream technology.

Dance About The National Ballet of Canada’s In-school Programme

Dance About began going into schools 50 years ago and has reached over 160,000 students and teachers since. The programme makes ballet more accessible to children from various socio-economic backgrounds and cultures by bringing the art form to them in their own communities. Four dancers, a piano accompanist, a narrator and a behind-the- scenes crew highlight the beauty and expression of ballet through a selection of dances straight from the National Ballet’s repertoire.

Dance About reached 2,100 audience members over seven performances in 2017/18.
