The ceremony was to begin at 6:00 p.m. Despite the weather, people were cheerful and very upbeat, savoring this moment of triumph for the community. Few there knew how close to derailment things still were. Sixth of June - The Conflict Begins On Thursday afternoon, June 6th, the lawyer for Summerfest, Michael Kelly, informed the Milwaukee AIDS Project (MAP) that Summerfest would not allow condoms on the festival grounds. This was apparently in response to the pressure the Board was getting from Right Wing Religionists who wanted to sell or otherwise distribute bibles at PrideFest 96. Doug Nelson, MAP's Executive Director, took the call from Kelly and was Milwaukee's In Between bar entered this prize winning float in the 1996 Wisconsin Pride Parade which marched through the stunned by the demand. streets of downtown Milwaukee on June 9, 1996.
