Anthony Millerick : First Team Manager ‘Millers’ is now in his fifth season with the Row. He has guided us to two league titles, two promotions taking us from step 5 to step 3, a Hampshire Senior Cup Semi-Final, and lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup. Tactically astute and, whilst he can be uncompromising, he has a way with his players that engenders loyalty.

Steve Noakes : Assistant Manager Steve became Millers’ number 2 at the end of Septem- ber 2019, having joined the Row as an experienced player ahead of the 2014/15 season, taking on the captaincy. His presence on the pitch, as well as his ability on the ball, helped guide us from the Combined Counties League to the Southern League.

Neil Woodyer : First Team Coach Neil joins us this season, well known to Millers from Neil’s time as assistant manager at Camberley some 10 years ago. Strong in his opinion yet very willing to hear another point of view, Woody’s approachable manner makes him a real asset.

Sam Rafique : First Team Coach Sam holds a UEFA License and is also currently an academy coach with Aldershot Town FC. Into his second season with us, he’s had spells at Fleet Town, Godalming Town & Camberley Town. Affable and very approachable, Sam works incredibly hard for the Club.

Keith Benjamin : Goalkeeping Coach An experienced goalkeeping coach in his second season with us, Keith brings us a wealth of experience and provides specialist goalkeeper mentoring and coaching to our group of talented ‘keepers.

Mark Hurst : First Team Coach One of the highest regarded football coaches locally, Mark has worked as a coaches' coach at both Fulham and Villareal FC. His experience and approach to helping players achieve their best is hugely beneficial.

Mark Povey : Sports Therapist Mark joined us this season from Wealdstone FC. He comes to us with a wealth of experience in the game, and with fresh ideas and techniques regarding physiotherapy, fitness and general well-being which have already benefited the players.

Striker Adam Cornell Joins the Row

We are delighted to announce the signing of striker Adam Cornell. Adam scored on his debut for the club in the league game at Yate Town this week.

Anthony Millerick was pleased to finally land a player that had been a long term target of the club, having been a big part of a prolific Bracknell Town side that made the step 4 play-off finals last season. Talking of the signing just before the midweek trip to Yate, Millers said “32 year old Adam has been in and around the level for a number of years and his experience and know-how will be vital as we look to balance the squad.”

Adam hadn’t played since Bracknell’s play-off final in May, until a run-out with Hartley Wintney’s Reserve Team on Saturday. “After scoring for the reserves on Saturday, Adam joins youngsters Dean Rule and Mickel Platt who have done very well in their short time with us, as well as the returning Michael Campbell, to give us more strength in depth across our forward line,” Millers added.

The speed of Adam's inclusion in the squad has beaten our 'media department' on this occasion, so apologies for the lack of a picture in Hartley colours.

Michael Campbell Returns to The Row Last season's top goalscorer, Michael Campbell, has agreed to rejoin the Row. The popular striker delighted the Hartley faithful last season with his workrate, commitment and goals, and he is sure to be very warmly welcomed back after leaving at the end of last season due to travelling and work commitments. He initially joined Hendon FC in the closed season, the club being closer to home, but departed The Greens shortly after. Hartley Wintney Manager, Anthony Millerick, persuaded the player affectionately known as Mikey to return to The Row, having had two strikers depart the club shortly into the season.

Millers was delighted that Michael agreed to re- turn. "Michael is a great lad, very hard working, very popular in the dressing room and with the fans; he's just the kind of character we need. He has a great personality to go with his pace and ability on the pitch, and for a manager that's a great combination."

Michael (30) began his career at Croydon and has played for Carshalton Athletic, Redhill and Staines Town amongst others.

Since the original announcement, Michael's re- introduction has been delayed due to registration formalities. pic: mark sandom 33

THE STRUGGLE BEHIND THE SCENES

The Future Depends On What We Do Today, Again Our treasurer Colin’s letter first aired in the Gosport programme is worthy of an- other airing. It brings to light the stresses and strains the football club is acutely feeling behind the scenes, and while I believe that those who currently hold the important positions have done an amazing and very professional job, if others don’t soon step forward, the club simply can’t survive at the current level. The requirements of running the business of the club - on and off the pitch 7 days a week - makes it unrealistic to expect that the same people, however talented, can go on delivering the professional level of overall club management without others around to help take some of the strain.

Colin wrote: “… behind the scenes I think that all those involved in running the club would openly admit we are still way off the pace. Yes, we 'get by', but only due to in- credible efforts, in terms of time and money, from certain individuals. But these efforts are taking their toll.”

I don’t feel we just ‘get by’ in terms of the way we handle things in the club - I believe the job being done by the few is very professional - and I don’t think that was Colin’s intention when he wrote that. I completely agree with where Colin is coming from. We are ‘getting by’ in the sense that there are so few doing so much. Colin went on to write: “Do we embrace the fact we are a Step 3 club and make changes to both our commercial and administrative operations to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on a chosen few?” He goes on, “It will require some tough decisions and new strategies, but like it or not football at this level is about money, and without more of it coming into the club we will struggle to sustain football at this level.”

Money is important, but committed people are as important to a football club - actually to any business. Money doesn’t always buy commitment - that’s as true for administrators/helpers as it is for players. We’ve come a very long way, not by paying the biggest wages in whichever league we were in, but in having play- ers, management and club administrators (and in that I include everyone from team secretaries and the chairman, to those showing people where to park and selling the programme) all working toward a singular vision of where we

42 MANY WAYS YOU CAN HELP dreamed the club could get to. We made the grade, but there are those who have paid the price in terms of the workload heaped on them.

Colin highlighted a hugely important issue that all of us who care for this club need to take on board… really take on board, not leave to someone else to think about. The club relies on Millers and his coaching staff to bring in fresh blood out on the pitch, and they’ve done it time after time. But we also need fresh blood and motivated people to help behind the scenes too.

Several have got involved as background volunteers since our CCL days, but we still need more help in all departments. Running this club is no ‘10 minutes every other day’ task. But when the load is spread, it becomes manageable for all.

In the only written response so far to Colin’s letter, apart from my own on our web forum, David Graham wrote: “Looking ahead, the key people to ask are Luke and Elayne, plus of course the committee. Up to now the decision making in virtually every aspect of the club has been spot on... Somehow Luke and Elayne must be supported; it is hard to imagine a more hard working couple for the club.”

Indeed, if these two were a strike force, they’d surely be the league’s top scor- ers year after year. But it has taken its toll, I can see that and I’m sure others have too. And it’s not just them. We all have jobs to do - apart from those fortu- nate enough to be retired - and sometimes it’s very difficult to justify the time spent on club jobs. Then the boys get a win and it carries us through the next week. But if only we could spread the load a little more.

I’m making it sound as if being involved in a football club is like having a stone weight around your neck. It’s not, though it can be at times! Being a part of a successful football club, even more being on the inside, is a special feeling if you love football. The satisfaction it gives is immense. But as a club grows, as the success comes, you need a bigger and bigger squad not just on the pitch but backing it all up… or else you risk putting vital people on the administrative equivalent of the long term injury list!

Please offer to help in whatever way you are able to. Talk to Luke, Elayne, Phil or any committee member. Thank you. [KOB]
