It’s in Your

Name ______Date ______Class ____

We have all heard of genes, mutations, and cloning but what are they really? How do they work? Over the next few weeks you will be doing research on a genetics- related topic. Your research will help you to prepare a presentation on your topic for the class.

1. Genetic engineering (pharmacology and 7. Genetics of - oncogenes and oncomirs, agriculture)- manipulating an organism’s tumor suppressor genes 8. Bioinformatics/Genomics/Proteomics, DNA 2. therapy- altering specific genes subway- using IT to analyze DNA and within an organism to affect health/ 9. / Epigenome/Twin Studies- the characteristics effect of the environment on 3. Stem cells and cloning- research/ therapy 10. (diseases and treatments)- infectious 4. DNA in Forensic science particles 5. Genetic testing (medical)/ Personalized 11. Genetics of aging- Aging genes in humans and medicine/Pharmacogenetics/ HapMap non-humans) 6. RNA interference (RNAi)/ Gene silencing – 12. Using DNA to study Evolution: Genographic using RNA to affect Project, Journey of Man / of a gene 13. Behavioral Genetics- genes that affect your behavior

Assignment- Please note, all work must be on time to receive credit. 1. Research your genetics topics with your group. You must find at least ten credible resources that you use in your outline/ presentation. For information about your Works Cited section and Citations within your outline, refer to the PHS Style Guide (http://www.piedmont.k12.ca.us/phs/pdf/library/phsstyleguide.pdf). Library Dates: 2/2, 2/3, 2/7, 2/8

2. Outline and Works Cited (use in-text citations). Please word-process and 1.5 spaced. This should include the basic research that you have done in neat, organized, outline format. Include lots of detail. Make sure to consult several resources before writing your outline in your own words. Address as many of the topics provided to you as possible. Once you have had a chance to fully review your topic, you can choose which subtopics you would like to highlight in your presentation. Make sure to cite information and images/media. Refer to the PHS Style Guide (http://www.piedmont.k12.ca.us/phs/pdf/library/phsstyleguide.pdf) Due: 2/16, 2/17 Submit Outline and Works Cited to Turnitin.com by Midnight Check for comments online by 2/28

3. Extra credit interview. You may conduct an interview with someone who can give you pertinent information on your topic (the interview should be included in the works cited section as any other information source). Your interview can be in person, over the phone or through email. Please provide a basic transcript of your interview and the Credentials of your interviewee. Your interviewee cannot be a family member of any person in the group. Interviews can be your best source of information however you must try to find a person as soon as possible. Amount of extra credit is based on the amount of useful information gained up to 5 points. Due: 2/27, 2/28 1. Transcript of interview (hard copy) 2. Credentials-CV (hard copy)

4. Prepare a Worksheet and separate key. It should cover the important information in your presentation. Not too easy, not too hard! Your Worksheet must include your presentation title, your names and spaces for students to record their answers and it must be one single-side 8.5’’ x 11’’ sheet and photocopy ready (0.75 inch borders, black and white on white paper and without any images that will copy black, free of wrinkles or folds). The key should be the exact same worksheet with the answers written in. Again, you will not get this back before your presentation, so make sure you have a copy. Due: 3/5, 3/6 1. Worksheet (correct format hard copy) 2. Separate worksheet key (not attached to worksheet hard copy)

5. ~15 minute Presentation which includes a computer-based visuals and the information that you think it is most important for the class to know about your topic (information covered on your worksheet). Try to get the class involved- ask students questions, refer to previous class discussions or previous presentations, perhaps include a short activity (it is a good idea to remind students of what they already know, but try not to spend to much time on previously covered material). Feel free to provide your personal opinions, as long as they are based on the research that you have done. Remember, this is a presentation about Genetics, so try to stay on topic! Please use the Presentation skills handout to guide you as you plan your presentation. Due: 3/7, 3/8 1. You must Test your presentation at least 1 day before the due date 2. Presentation 3. Printout of presentation slides- note taking style, 4 slides/page 4. Hard copy of Works cited section (make sure to include citations for images)
