I was fourteen when the Khmer Rouge came to Phnom Penh in April 1975. At the time, I lived in Toul Kauk, a Phnom Penh suburb. I was home alone when young Khmer Rouge comrades came to chase me out of the house on the morning of 17 April. My mother, who’d been hoping to collect me later, had previously moved with the rest of the family to my uncle’s house for greater safety. -

When did the rascals of “The Front Page” turn into the scoundrels of “Absence of Malice”? Why did reporters stop being heroes played by Clark Gable, Bette Davis and Cary Grant and become bit actors playing rogues dogging at the heels of Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn? It all happened in the dark as people watched movies and sat at home listening to radio and watching television. “The Image of the Journalist in Popular Culture” explores the continuing, evolving relationship between the American people and their media. It investigates the conflicting images of reporters in movies and television and demonstrates, decade by decade, their impact on the American public’s perception of newsgatherers in the 20th century. The class shows how it happened first on the big screen, then on the small screens in homes across the country. The class investigates the image of the cinematic newsgatherer from silent films to the 1990s, from Hildy Johnson of “The Front Page” and Charles Foster Kane of “Citizen Kane” to Jane Craig in “Broadcast News.” The reporter as the perfect movie hero. -

President Obama’s Letter to His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni on the Occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the United States and Cambodia Your Majesty: On behalf of the American people, I wish to congratulate the Kingdom of Cambodia on the Occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries. This important milestone presents us with the opportunity to reflect on our shared past and to plot a course for the future based on the strong foundation we have built together. Both Cambodia and the United States have changed immensely since July 11, 1950, when our first Ambassador to your country presented his credentials to King Sihanouk. As with any bilateral relationship, there have been times when we have not agreed, but the overall growth in the depth and breadth of our engagement reflects a maturing partnership. Over the last several years, for example, we have seen many positive developments, including the establishment of the Peace Corps program in Cambodia, the creation of the Extraordinary Cambers of the Courts in Cambodia and completion of its first trial, and the inauguration of Cambodia’s peacekeeping force, a truly momentous achievement for a coutry that was the beneficiary of peacekeepers less than two decades before. The United States is now the top market for Cambodia’s garment exporters, forming a pillar for the country’s economic growth. Military-to-military and counterterrism cooperation between our two countries has grown as well, creating a safer environment for both Americans and Cambodians. In the coming years, we look forward to taking advantage of the positive momentum that has been created and to see the patnership between our two nations grow stronger and deeper in areas such as food security, climate change, health, education, human rights, and strengthening democratic institutions. -

Comprehension and Discussion Activities for the Movie The Killing Fields This module has been designed to accompany the film The Killing Fields (1984). The Killing Fields is based on real characters and events that took place in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge regime during the 1970s. The film follows the story of New York Times journalist Sydney Schanberg and his translator, Cambodian journalist Dith Pran. The module consists of teacher’s notes and two handouts that you can copy and give to your students. If you don’t have access to a copier, you can write these on the board. You might like to do many of these activities in students’ first language. It is important that they understand the ideas behind the story, and this is easier in their own language. 1. Before You Watch 1.1: Useful Vocabulary Here are some useful words and phrases to help students understand the movie: bribe evacuate execute mass grave invade re-education civilian casualties reunited sanitise negotiate Write them on the board, and get students to look them up in their dictionaries. (A mass grave is a place where many people are buried at the same time.) 1.2: Background Ask students what they know about Cambodia. Write their ideas on the board. Give copies of the Worksheet: Background Information to your students, or explain this information to them. 2. OVERVIEW From Monday until Tuesday, the Chamber heard American photojournalist Al Rockoff testify on his experiences in Phnom Penh before and during the fall of the city in April 1975. In the two days following Rockoff’s testimony, the Prosecution presented key documents relevant to the respective roles of Ieng Sary and Khieu Samphan. Legal and procedural issues raised this week included the use of testimonies of deceased persons, timely circulation of the list of documents to be presented, and the health condition of Accused Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan. Despite these concerns, Al Rockoff completed his testimony and the OCP presented documents expeditiously. II. SUMMARY OF AL ROCKOFF’S TESTIMONY Al Rockoff, an American photojournalist made famous by his coverage of the Vietnam War and the Khmer Rouge invasion of Phnom Penh, testified before the Court on Monday and Tuesday.1 He spoke in great detail of the evacuation of Phnom Penh, the months of fighting that preceded the evacuation, and his firsthand observations of Khmer Rouge cadres. A. Background Alan Thomas Rockoff, 64, currently splits his time between his residence in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and his home in Phnom Penh. -

Cover Story Vanes and Vietnam In May the FCC remembered much-loved Club stalwart, Hugh Van Es, who died a year ago. A wonderful retrospective of this famous photographer’s work – deftly put together by Vanes’ close friend and fellow photographer, Kees Metselaar – started proceedings while a huge gathering of old friends and media professionals, many of whom had just attended events in Vietnam and Cambodia that commemorated the 35th Anniversary of the “fall of Saigon”, brought things to a suitably rowdy close. It was fitting – as a consummate social networker, Vanes had always been instrumental in arranging the previous reunion gatherings. Former FCC President John Giannini attended both the Vietnam and the Hong Kong events and here, for The Correspondent, he remembers when he first met Vanes in a bar (that was actually a tent) in Quan Loi in 1969. Overleaf, former Vietnam war journalist Don Kirk uses the reunion to trigger media memories from the war while Luke Hunt finds that the mystery surrounding the disappearance of famed combat photographer Sean Flynn is as strong as ever. 8 THE CORRESPONDENT Cover Story A GUY WALKS INTO A BAR… The bar happened to be the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment’s Air Rifle Platoon enlisted men’s club at Quan Loi, Vietnam, near the Cambodian border. The bar wasn’t really a bar, but a tent on a wooden floor. It was the Fall of 1969. At a table sat four civilians, at least the guy assumed they were civilians. They wore mismatched bits of military uniforms and they had more style than any military personnel. -

1970 -1975 A First and Last Reunion of a Unique Band of Brothers & Sisters For those who covered the Cambodian War between 1970 and 1975, the memories have always been particularly painful. Forty years ago this month, they witnessed first-hand the overnight plunge of a peaceful Cambodia into the abyss as the country was dragged into the Vietnam War. Then over the next five years, the horrors multiplied as war engulfed the entire country. A total of 37 foreign and Cambodian journalists were killed or disappeared, more than in the war in neighboring Vietnam. When the war ended with the fall of Phnom Penh to the Khmer Rouge on April 17, 1975, Cambodia’s nightmare continued—and many of those who covered the war could not bear to look back at the entire tragedy. At least 31 Cambodian journalists were executed after the Khmer Rouge take-over, including one country’s few female reporters. Now, for the first time since that horrible war, a handful of war correspondents are returning to Phnom Penh for a reunion from 20 to 23 April. Historical lms are perennially popular, often because they tell history through individual lives, because they invent characters and add personal, emotional drama to events that we want to learn about. Those same ctionalizing qualities make them great tools for teaching history. It has never been more urgent to train students to recognize how all stories — from those told by the most inventive narrator to the most professional historian — are told from particular points of view, shaped by the context of the story-tellers’ lives. During the next academic year (2019-2020) we will be sponsoring a history lm series to accompany the U.S. History survey course. The lm series will run at UT Austin, but we want to make titles available to teachers of U.S. history at any level or institution, to use in their classrooms, to supplement lectures and other activities with lms. The list of lms that follows is just the beginning. We are starting now so that we can collect as extensive a list as possible, from which to choose the lms that we will screen and that anyone can choose to watch or teach. Photo: Al Rockoff Phnom Penh: “An Isolated City under Military Siege” Prior to Its Fall By Doreen Chen, Senior Consultant, Destination Justice, and LLM, Columbia Law School1 American photographer Al Rockoff offered insight into conditions in Phnom Penh prior to its fall in his second day of testimony before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on January 29, 2013. Describing Phnom Penh as an “isolated city under military siege,” Mr. Rockoff detailed how the city had a “ring of steel around it” due to the American bombing campaign, and was then inundated with two million refugees in the period from 1973 to 1975. Conditions for refugees in Phnom Penh were harsh back then, Mr. Rockoff described. Making reference to what are today, two of Phnom Penh’s luxury landmarks — namely the five-star Cambodiana Hotel and the Hotel Raffles le Royal — Mr. Rockoff testified how the first was home to a 23,000 person refugee camp and how a park in front of the second became a makeshift, outdoor home to hundreds of refugees. The witness also provided insight into a range of other issues surrounding the fall of Phnom Penh, including conditions, equipment and tactics of the Lon Nol military whom the witness had frequently accompanied on missions, as well as Khmer Rouge artillery and discipline. After Mr. Rockoff’s testimony was concluded, the Chamber engaged in a brief discussion with the parties concerning their preparations for hearings that will take place on January 30 and 31, which will feature presentations of key documents of relevance to the roles of the accused persons.
