    07 July, 2020 Zardozi embroidery Zardozi embroidery is beautiful metal embroidery, which once used to embellish the attire of the Kings and the royals in India. It was also used to adorn walls of the royal tents, scabbards, wall hangings and the paraphernalia of regal elephants and horses. Zardozi embroidery work involves making elaborate designs, using gold and silver threads. Further adding to the magnificence of the work are the studded pearls and precious stones. Zardosi embroidery has been in existence in India from the time of the Rig Veda. There are numerous instances mentioning the use of zari embroidery as ornamentation on the attire of gods. Initially, the embroidery was done with pure silver wires and real gold leaves. However, today, craftsmen make use of a combination of copper wire, with a golden or silver polish, and a silk thread. Main Center of Zardozi Embroidery in India Zardosi embroidery work is mainly a specialty of Lucknow, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Delhi, Agra, Kashmir, Mumbai, Ajmer and Chennai. History of Zardozi Embroidery in India The word 'Zardozi' is made up of two Persian terms, Zar meaning gold and Dozi meaning embroidery. A Persian embroidery form, Zardosi attained its summit in the 17th century, under the patronage of Mughal Emperor Akbar. Under the rule of Aurangzeb, the royal patronage stopped and this led to the decline of the craft. Since the cost was high and raw materials quite rare, craftsmen could not carry on with the embroidery on their own. Many craftsmen left Delhi and went to the courts of Rajasthan and Punjab in search of work.

INTRODUCTION The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is an apex organization for the development and coordination of the vocational training including vocational training for women in our country. The Ministry conducts the training programmes through the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS), Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS), Modular Employable Scheme (MES) under the Skill Development Initiative (SDI) Scheme, and Craftsmen Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) to cater to the needs of different segments of the Labour market. The National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) acts as a central agency to advise Government of India in framing the training policy and coordinating vocational training throughout India. A majority of Indian workforce does not possess marketable skills which is an obstacle in getting decent employment and improving their economic condition.

A separate technique exists for metal or other precious threads, for non-pliable materials such as quills and for narrow decorative trims, usually cords and braids These are laid on the fabric and couched down by stitching with another thread. (44) Gold and Silver embroidery commonly known as Zardosi was an ancient Persian art. Zar m Persian meant gold and Dozi was embroidery Today, the word ‘Zardozi’ carries a different connotation Zardosi was also known as Karchobi, since it was done on karchob - a Persian word meaning a wooden frame. Zardosi work was done by hand using a regular needle, while Zari work was done with the use of a hooked needle, known as Aari. Zardosi has evolved from the-court tradition-and taken its form in utilitarian and socio-religious paraphernalia It is thriving m India with rapid growth in both domestic and export markets. Zardosi embroidery as a handicraft is an enviable possession of our national heritage that contributes substantially to Indian economy. Jayakar Pupul, the doyenne of Indian crafts, once said, ‘Craft’ is an economic activity before it is a cultural activity Zardosi as a craft is omnipresent in India, in urban as well as their rural hinterland in homogenous clusters.
