The line was modelled from original fixture designs from 1901 and 1902 – “an era caught between the romance of rustic spas and the industrial revolution” – according to an Axor Hansgrohe spokesperson. Whatever, they look great and work a lot better than the originals ever did. The entire line is available through local Axor 8 Hansgrohe dealers and bath outlets. Rechargeable, foldable mower Hate dragging that lawnmower power cord or finding a place to store the mower? Gardena’s new super-quiet 12- volt rechargeable will mow down about 3,000 square feet of grass on a single charge and then fold up to the size of suitcase for easy transport or storage. It even works as a manual mower without the battery pack. Gardena is based in Ontario, but their mower is available at dealers across Greater Vancouver. / ?FD<dXb\fm\iD8I:?&8GI@C)''. 0.1_HM_MARAPR.indd 8 3/16/07 10:53:43 AM Leather and steel Just in time (kinda) for Father’s Day and the Canucks in the playoffs comes the Schelly chair in black leather and brushed steel, with matching footstool. Barbecue indoors Many condominium owners are not allowed to cook with a conventional gas or charcoal barbecue on the balcony. Others don’t like to barbecue outside when it is cold or rain- ing. Now, finally, comes an electric barbecue that allows you to barbecue, really barbecue, safely anywhere, even indoors. Firestone’s New Legacy electric convection grill heats fast and reaches searing heat – 400 F – even faster than big grills. Yet it plugs right into conventional wall plugs and you will never be nervous lighting up. This is not for the barby purists, though. The little grill can be put on automated mode that will cook food pre- cisely and then emit a polite beep to tell you it’s ready. It even has a non-stick cooking surface. The grill – about 20 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches – weighs only 25 pounds and requires no assembly. It can be found at dealers across Greater Vancouver. Starting this month (April) Rhinobag will sell you a giant garbage bin made of tough polypropylene that you can fill with a ton-and- half of (non hazardous) renovation waste, junk or gar- den debris and then, three days later, a large truck with a crane comes and picks it up and hauls it away, all for $159.95. Yet 2439 Eton Street in Vancouver’s PNE area proved an edu- cation. Flared support pier posts, built with integrity rough and river rock, frame two wonderful front sunrooms. Board and batten cladding, delicate stained-glass and leaded windows, diamond-patterned fir floors, unpainted wainscot- ing and beamed ceilings all stand as testament to the original design of the house. In the garden, old stone terraces and a number of mature trees remain, including a giant English wal- nut that is probably as old as the house. 2538 Balaclava Street The current owners of 2538 Balaclava were lucky enough to be the first prospective buyers to see this once badly neglected Kitsilano Craftsman house. The home stands just south of Broadway on a block featuring eight homes built by Vernon Brothers Developers in 1912. Little did the owners know when they purchased the house in 2002 that, behind the 1970s drywall dissecting the house into two suites, lay the original trim, moulding, wainscoting and 3996 West 10th built-in china cabinets. Today the house is back to its original layout with all the woodwork beautifully restored, and the rooms decorated with unique items from the owners’ collect- ibles and furniture store, Stepback. The owners believe the res- toration of the house, and their active lifestyle with three young children, is testament to the fact that you can live a modern life in an old house without destroying its heritage integrity. 55 E Cordova St./ Koret Lofts 2538 Balaclava Edward John McFeely and Robert Purves McLennan, business- Street men from Winnipeg, arrived in Vancouver in 1885 and quickly set up a warehouse business in Gastown. Incorporated as McLennan, McFeely and Co., Ltd., by 1914 the business was the largest of its kind west of Winnipeg. The warehouse and office space, built in 1908, is now known as the Koret building. After standing vacant for many years, it was rehabilitated, with the help of a Parks Canada grant, as the Koret Lofts – a commercial live/work strata housing project.
