Abstract The Iraqi Zagros Mountain Belt has been deformed intensely by colliding of Arabian and Iranian plates and the resulted deformation, on all scales, have been analysed in the previous studies, includ- ing folding and faulting. One of these deformations is the Darbandikhan (or Khanaqin) fault which has nearly N20E tends. According to the previous studies, it extends for about 200kms in the eastern Iraq and nearly coincides with Sirwan (or Diala) river. It is indicated on the maps and described by many authors previously either as traverse strike slip fault or as deep normal fault. Moreover than that, some geologists have attributed many tertiary stratigraphic and sedimentologic variations to the movement of the blocks of this fault. In the present study, the field data and stereonets are used to analyse the surface structural and stratigraphical expression of the fault. For this purpose, the Dar- bandikan Gorge (or town) and its surrounding areas are survey for classification of the deformational and stratigraphical and sedimentologic difference (on the both side of the fault) that may be associ- ated with this fault on the surface. In the present study, neither traverse strike slip nor normal fault are recorded in the Darbandikhan gorge and surrounding areas. Moreover, no stratigraphic differ- ences (facies changes) are recorded on both left and right sides of the assumed fault. The recorded deformation is lateral thrust fault that strikes nearly N20W. The strikes of the fault are not coinciding with the previously indicated Darbandikhan (Khanaqin) fault which is assumed to strikes nearly N20E. In this study the stress components (ϭ1, ϭ2, and ϭ3) are clarified with the origin of the shorten- ing that are associated with the thrust and strike slip faults. Amin3,4 and Renata Sõukand5 Abstract Background: Iraqi Kurdistan is a special hotspot for bio-cultural diversity and for investigating patterns of traditional wild food plant foraging, considering that this area was the home of the first Neolithic communities and has been, over millennia, a crossroad of different civilizations and cultures. The aim of this ethnobotanical field study was to cross-culturally compare the wild food plants traditionally gathered by Kurdish Muslims and those gathered by the ancient Kurdish Kakai (Yarsan) religious group and to possibly better understand the human ecology behind these practices. Methods: Twelve villages were visited and 123 study participants (55 Kakai and 68 Muslim Kurds) were interviewed on the specific topic of the wild food plants they currently gather and consume. Results: The culinary use of 54 folk wild plant taxa (corresponding to 65 botanical taxa) and two folk wild mushroom taxa were documented. While Kakais and Muslims do share a majority of the quoted food plants and also their uses, among the plant ingredients exclusively and commonly quoted by Muslims non-weedy plants are slightly preponderant. Moreover, more than half of the overall recorded wild food plants are used raw as snacks, i.e. plant parts are consumed on the spot after their gathering and only sometimes do they enter into the domestic arena.

Surveys in the Kurd- istan region of northeastern Iraq from 2007 to 2012 resulted in the discovery of N. microspilotus at seven new localities distributed in the Zagros Mountain of Sulaymaniya Province. The new locations provide a major range extension of N. microspilotus. In addition, four new localities of N. crocatus were located between 2007 and 2013. In addition to Neurergus newt surveys, interviews with local people were also conducted through the use of photographs. Severe drought during recent years as well as anthropogenic habitat destruction and pollution have been considered as main threats to the survival of both species in northern Iraq.

    The Water Shortage Crisis in Iraq by Bahrooz Jaafar BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 2,140, August 31, 2021 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Middle East and North Africa are dry, with higher temperatures, fewer rivers, and less rain and snowfall than the rest of the world. Thanks to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, Iraq is one of the richest countries in the region in terms of water resources—but millions of Iraqis nevertheless suffer from a lack of clean water as temperatures rise and desertification overtakes large parts of the country. This problem is badly mismanaged by the Iraqi government, as it is by other governments across the region, and is worsened by the malign actions of neighboring countries. If the water problem is not solved, Iraqi civilization could disappear completely. The Middle East contains 6.3% of the world’s population but only 1.4% of its usable clean water. In 1955, only three Arab countries suffered a water crisis, but that figure has risen to 11. Scientists forecast that seven more will suffer a water crisis by 2025. The British think tank Chatham House titled a report on this problem, “Do not solve the water problem in Iraq using an old policy.” The center argues that the Iraqi PM’s office must prioritize the water problem, as successive governments largely contributed to its severity. According to Chatham House, Iraq was in a good position regarding water due to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers until 1970. After that year, however, the country lost about 40% of its water. This was partly due to policies in neighboring countries (especially Turkey) toward Iraq.

The valley is called Qopy Qaradagh and it is beautiful picnic area for the people of the nearby Qaradagh town and surrounding villages. The anticline is located 40 kms to the south of Sulaimani city at the boundary between High and Low Folded Zones. Recently the anticline is subjected to intense geological and seismic survey for oil exploration and an oil well is drilled to depth of 3400 m without finding economic oil. The objective of present study was to investigate sequencing of four genes (AlphaS1-casein, alphaS2-casein, beta lactoglobulin and Major histocompatibility complex) that related to milk traits in Karadi sheep. A total of 300 ewes from three flocks were studied. The results revealed which are include effects of lamb’s sex, dam’s age and month of lambing were not significant on the milk traits except the ewes flock has significant effect on daily milk yield. The Best Linear Unbiased Prediction value for all ewes concerning daily milk yield, protein and fat percentages ranged from -10.5293 to 10.7504, -2.0546 to 2.0097% and -1.7033 to 1.4067%, respectively. The DNA sequencing results show that there are differences between ewes with high and low milk production in AlphaS1-casein, alphaS2-casein, beta lactoglobulin and Major histocompatibility complex loci sequences these differences reflected by milk performance of ewes in two groups, ewes in high group produced 300% more daily milk than ewes in low group (355.8 vs.
