HAYDN RAWSTRON LIMITED Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1971, Alexander Vassiliev studied singing (with Prof. Yevgeny Nesterenko) and composition at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow, before joining the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Thereafter, he was engaged at the opera houses of Freiburg, Braunschweig and Cologne, where he sang Bottom (A Midsummer Night's Dream/Britten), Alidoro and Don Basilio (Rossini), Méphisto (Gounod), The Waterspirit (Rusalka/Dvorak), Kaspar (Der Freischütz), Figaro and Leporello (Mozart), Ramfis and Camillo (German premiere of Boesmans’ „Wintermärchen“). Vassiliev’s career would lead him to debut at La Scala in Milan (Der Einarmige/„Die Frau ohne Schatten“), the Royal Opera House in London (Pan Golova/„Tsarina’s Slippers“/Tchaikovsky), Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (Le Bailli/„Werther“), Opéra National de Paris and Teatro Real de Madrid (Priest/„Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk“). Alexander Vassiliev Bass In previous seasons Alexander Vassiliev had been engaged at a number of opera houses including the Théâtre de La Monnaie in Brussels (Rachmaninoff Troika, Old Gypsy/Aleko), De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam (Priest/The Cunning Little Vixen, Priest/Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Farfarello/Love for the Three Oranges) and at the Grand Théâtre de Genève (Bartolo/Le Nozze di Figaro, Colline, Biterolf, Forester/The Cunning Little Vixen). He had also performed at the Mariinsky-Theatre in Saint Petersburg (Figaro/Mozart), at the Munich Opera Festival, in Düsseldorf, Paris, Nancy, Montpellier, Cagliari and Bologna. More recently he made his debut as Gurnemanz at the Lübeck Theatre, sang Fasolt in Das Rheingold at the opera house in Halle, Germany, and Rychtar in Jenufa in Brussels. In September 2013 he won the 1st Prize at the 1st International Singing Competition Ópera de Tenerife. Other recent engagements include Cherevichki (The Slippers) in Cagliari, and in Brussels The Demon (The Servant) by Anton Rubinstein and The Golden Cockerel (Polkan) by Rimsky-Korsakov. In Amsterdam he was engaged to sing Der Notar in Der Rosenkavalier and 5th Jew in Salome, whilst at the Glyndebourne Festival the role of Badger/Parson in The Cunning Little Vixen and debuts as Gremin in Eugene Onegin and Commendatore in Don Giovanni. His current and future projects include the new production of From the House of the Dead (Prison Governor) by Krzysztof Warlikowski at La Monnaie in Brussels, the Opéra National de Lyon and at the Royal Opera House in London. He will sing Skomoroch and 3rd Shipman in Rimsky-Korsakov‘s The Tale of the Tsar Saltan staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov also at La Monnaie, Bruckner‘s Te Deum under Hartmut Haenchen at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels as well as recitals in Freiburg and Staufen. He is also due to cover Golaud in Pelléas et Mélisande at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Alexander Vassiliev has worked with some notable stage directors (Pierre Audi, Laurent Pelly, Robert Carsen and Richard Jones) and with such renowned conductors as Kazushi Ono, Mariss Jansons, Armin Jordan, Daniele Gatt and Mikhail Yurovski. He is much in demand for concert work, having performed Verdi's and Mozart's Requiems, Bach's St. Matthew's Passion, Janáček‘s Glagolitic Mass and Shostakovich’s 14th Symphony, in venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, at the Beethoven Festival in Krakow and at the Verbier Festival, and in many other important concert halls in Germany, France, Italy and Holland. His recitals have been presented in Geneva, Amsterdam, Elmau Castle, Citta di Castello, at Gidon Kremer’s Chamber Music Festival in Lockenhaus and in Davos. He has appeared with artists such as Helmut Rilling, Enoch zu Guttenberg and Christoph Spering. His singing has featured in many recordings, including the CDs of Bizet's Ivan IV (Naïve) and Reznicek’s Tragical Story (on CPO), as well as the first complete recording of songs by Rudi Stephan (on MDG), a project started by the singer himself. In 2008, he co-founded and is now artistic director of the chamber music festival Klassikfest Kaiserstuhl in Ihringen.     Così fan tutte Cast Biography (Cahir, Ireland) Jennifer Davis is an alumna of the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme and has appeared at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden as Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore; Erste Dame in Die Zauberflöte; Ifigenia in Oreste; Arbate in Mitridate, re di Ponto; and Ines in Il Trovatore, among other roles. Following her sensational 2018 role debut as Elsa von Brabant in a new production of Lohengrin conducted by Andris Nelsons at the Royal Opera House, Davis has been propelled to international attention, winning praise for her gleaming, silvery tone, and dramatic characterisation of remarkable immediacy. (Sacramento, California) American Mezzo-soprano Irene Roberts continues to enjoy international acclaim as a singer of exceptional versatility and vocal suppleness. Following her “stunning and dramatically compelling” (SF Classical Voice) performances as Carmen at the San Francisco Opera in June, Roberts begins the 2016/2017 season in San Francisco as Bao Chai in the world premiere of Bright Sheng’s Dream of the Red Chamber. Currently in her second season with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, her upcoming assignments include four role debuts, beginning in November with her debut as Urbain in David Alden’s new production of Les Huguenots led by Michele Mariotti. She performs in her first Ring cycle in 2017 singing Waltraute in Die Walküre and the Second Norn in Götterdämmerung under the baton of Music Director Donald Runnicles, who also conducts her role debut as Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel.     Patrick Kinmonth Director, Designer Kinmonth paces his direction from the tough first, through a lively second to the turbulent third act with enormous skill. It’s a celebration of theatre with great musical performances in a tasteful, technically, highly professional production that through characterisation and comic situations revive the wit of yesteryear Jan Brachmann, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, L’Opera seria, La Monnaie, Brussels Patrick Kinmonth is an internationally acclaimed director, set and costume designer for opera, photography and dance. In 2008 Kinmonth made his opera-directing debut, a lauded staging of Madama Butterfly for Cologne Opera. Since then he has directed and designed numerous productions including Samson et Dalila at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Don Giovanni and Rigoletto at Theater Augsburg, Die Gezeichneten, voted Best Opera Production of the season at Cologne Opera, Daphne at Toulouse, Solaris at Cologne Opera, Gassmann’s L’Opera seria at La Monnaie, Brussels and La clemenza di Tito at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. To open the 17-18 season at Cologne Opera, Kinmonth directed the seldom-heard Dresden version of Tannhäuser, conducted by François-Xavier Roth; he will return in the 19-20 season for Tristan und Isolde with the same creative team. As a designer, Kinmonth’s set and costumes for Robert Carsen’s La traviata graced the re-opening of Teatro La Fenice, Venice in 2004 and now traditionally opens the season. His designs for Wagner’s Ring were created for Cologne Opera and were taken to Venice and Shanghai. The production ran at Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona from 2013-16. Further productions with Carsen include Semele and Die Zauberflöte in Vienna, London, Aix-en-Provence, Antwerp, Lyon and Zürich, and The Cunning Little Vixen, Kát’a Kabanová and Jenůfa.

    Manon Lescaut Cast Biographies Soprano Lianna Haroutounian made her San Francisco Opera debut in 2014's Tosca and returned in 2016 as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, a role she recently sang to great acclaim at the Vienna State Opera, Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, Hamburg State Opera and Seattle Opera. She opened San Francisco Opera’s 2018–19 Season as Nedda in Pagliacci and makes her role debut with the Company as the title heroine in Manon Lescaut next season. She has performed Elisabetta in Don Carlo at Deutsche Oper; Staatsoper Berlin; Royal Opera, Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera. Her operatic appearances also include the title role of Tosca for her Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia debut in Valencia, Leonora in Il Trovatore at Covent Garden, Amelia in a concert performance of Simon Boccanegra at Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw and Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera in Bern and Tours.
