A new catfish from Sierra Leone Gordon Jon Howes Zoology Department, British Museum (Natural History), Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD A collection of freshwater fishes from Sierra Leone made by Dr A. I. Payne contained three specimens of a previously undescribed dwarf catfish. At first sight these small fishes (33-5- 36 mm SL) were thought to be the juveniles of a Synodontis species, but closer examination showed many significant differences. Furthermore, dissection of two specimens revealed that they were adult females, having ripe ovaries. In overall morphology the new catfish appears closer to members of the Mochokidae sensu lato than to those of any other siluroid family, (see p. 168). The possibility that these fishes belonged to the dwarf mochokid genus Microsynodontis was dispelled when comparisons were made with species of that genus. MOCHOKIELLA gen. nov. Fishes of a small size with a shallow body (depth 25-5-27-9 of SL). Head broad (almost equal to its length) with dorsal profile sloped, snout rounded, ethmoid with narrow rostral process. Nostrils widely separated, the posterior situated midway between the anterior nostril and the orbital rim. Anterior nostril tubular. Mouth small, lower lip developed only at the corners of the mouth. Premaxillary teeth short and conical, in a broad patch. Dentary teeth like those on the premaxilla, set in a broad semi-crescentic band. Vomerine teeth absent. One pair of maxillary and two pairs of mandibular barbels. The maxillary barbel long, reaching to the tip of the cleithral process. Outer mandibular barbel extending to halfway along the cleithral process, the inner reaching to the base of the pectoral spine. -

(Doradidae) by Derek Tustin (Author’s Note: I started The Year of the Catfish with the intention of writing an article relating to some aspect of Catfish in the aquarium on a monthly basis. Last month, April 2013, I did not. I know this caused a bit of consternation on the part of Klaus Steinhaus, the editor of Tank Talk, and he had to find another article to fill the space. As such, I offer both he and the readers of Tank Talk my sincere apologies and to make up for it, give you a double helping of The Year of the Catfish this month. – Derek P.S. Tustin) o you have that one fish species of fish that you have Agamyxis pectinifrons D an unbridled affinity for? That one special species that just strikes a chord with you that you want to keep no matter what? Perhaps something that you have kept every time the opportunity presents? I think we all have a small group of species that no matter how unattractive other aquarists may find them, we want to keep them. I think you all know by now my absolute fascination with rainbowfish, and the extent that I am willing to go to obtain certain species. Given that, you might be surprised to know that my “soft-spot species” isn’t a rainbowfish, but rather a catfish, specifically the White-Spotted Doradid, Agamyxis pectinifrons. (Or it actually might be… but I’ll get to that in a bit.) Agamyxis pectinifrons is a member of the Doradidae family. -

Phylogenetic Relationships of the South American Doradoidea (Ostariophysi: Siluriformes)

O. Birindelli A phylogenetic analysis based on 311 morphological characters is presented for most species of the Doradidae, all genera of the Auchenipteridae, and representatives of 16 other catfish families. The hypothesis that was derived from the six most parsimonious trees support the monophyly of the South American Doradoidea (Doradidae plus Auchenipteridae), as well as the monophyly of the clade Doradoidea plus the African Mochokidae. In addition, the clade with Sisoroidea plus Aspredinidae was considered sister to Doradoidea plus Mochokidae. Within the Auchenipteridae, the results support the monophyly of the Centromochlinae and Auchenipterinae. The latter is composed of Tocantinsia, and four monophyletic units, two small with Asterophysus and Liosomadoras, and Pseudotatia and Pseudauchenipterus, respectively, and two large ones with the remaining genera. Within the Doradidae, parsimony analysis recovered Wertheimeria as sister to Kalyptodoras, composing a clade sister to all remaining doradids, which include Franciscodoras and two monophyletic groups: Astrodoradinae (plus Acanthodoras and Agamyxis) and Doradinae (new arrangement). Wertheimerinae, new subfamily, is described for Kalyptodoras and Wertheimeria. Doradinae is corroborated as monophyletic and composed of four groups, one including Centrochir and Platydoras, the other with the large-size species of doradids (except Oxydoras), another with Orinocodoras, Rhinodoras, and Rhynchodoras, and another with Oxydoras plus all the fimbriate-barbel doradids. Based on the results, the species of Opsodoras are included in Hemidoras; and Tenellus, new genus, is described to include Nemadoras trimaculatus, N. -

Neotropical Ichthyology, 11(3):507-512, 2013 Copyright © 2013 Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia Description of a new species of Microglanis (Siluriformes: Pseudopimelodidae) from the Amazon basin, Amazonas State, Brazil Lucas Ribeiro Jarduli1 and Oscar Akio Shibatta1,2 The first species of Microglanis from the rio Amazonas, Amazonas State, Brazil is described. This species differs from all congeners by the forked caudal fin, and color pattern of the supraoccipital region consisting of two elliptical and juxtaposed pale spots, besides a combination of morphometrics characters. A primeira espécie de Microglanis da calha do rio Amazonas, estado do Amazonas, Brasil é descrita. Essa espécie difere de todas as congêneres pela nadadeira caudal bifurcada e padrão de colorido da região supraoccipital constituído por duas manchas elípticas claras e justapostas, além de uma combinação de caracteres morfométricos. This area is subjected to intense human activities with many plantations (palm tree, banana, pineapple, coffee, rubber and cocoa). Samples were collected, with gillnets of different mesh sizes, through 6 sampling surveys during dry and rainy seasons from February 2010 to December 2010 at 6 sampling sites. A total of 70 fish species belonging to 48 genera, 28 families and 10 orders were recorded. The temporal variation of diversity index is less marked than spatial variation. The upstream, with 35 species, was less rich in species than the medium area and downstream areas (respectively 46 and 68). The upstream and downstream areas gathered 35 species. Thirty three species were common to the upper and middle areas and 46 species appeared both in the lower courses and the middle area. The 21 species restricted to the lower part of the river are mainly estuarine/marine origin. The beta diversity value revealed low similarity between the lower and upper course of Ehania River. Introduction Contribution of Indigenous Fish in Total Production Is
Workshop Proceedings on Indigenous Fish Stock and Livelihood in Nepal 1 Introduction Contribution of indigenous fish in total production is declining worldwide as most fresh and marine fishes have been over fished (FAO 2008). Previously, many such over fished waters were introduced with non-native fish for providing immediate reliance to fishers through enhancing capture fisheries; and protection of native fish being over exploitation by diverting fisher to non-indigenous species. Details of scientific review might need either those strategies could be fruitful or not. However, recently, more focus has been given to develop the technologies of native fish species for enhancing their fishery and aquaculture from biodiversity perspectives. Knowledge and information on native species from the present perspective has seldom been synthesized and analyzed. Therefore, it is essential to collect the scattered data and prioritize the strategies for sustainable technological generation of these species in the country. The current proposal for organizing a workshop on such a crucial subject would be highly fruitful to give the direction of future research in development of fisheries and aquaculture technologies prioritizing values of indigenous fishes and re-positioning the fisheries and aquaculture to more rewarding, environment friendly, socially acceptable and economically profitable activity. The overall objective of the workshop is aquaculture development of native fish species for biodiversity and aquaculture practices. The symposium would attract the scientific attention on review, cross interaction, situation analysis, planning focused research, intervention program to make fisheries and aquaculture technology of indigenous fishes more competitive and advantageous. Abstract: This study compared the parasites community in Corydoras ephippifer, Corydoras melanistius, Corydoras amapaensis and Corydoras spilurus from tributaries from the Amapari River in State of Amapá (Brazil). A total of 151 fish of these four ornamental species were examined, of which 66.2% were parasitized by one or more species, and a total of 732 parasites were collected. Corydoras ephippifer (91.2%) and C. spilurus (98.8%) were the most parasitized hosts, while C. amapaensis (9.6%) was the least parasitized. A high similarity (≅ 75%) of parasite communities was found in the host species.
