All World's Fairs had "ethnic" exhibits displaying exotic and ancient traditions1 alongside the most modern Sponsorship, Advertising, Vending aspects of technology. Similarly, with a short walk across Disnelyland's Main Christi Crowe @ FLAG Marketing Street, tourists travelled from the advanced technologies of Tomorrowland to the wilds of Adventureland's Tiki Room and Jungle Cruise. From late 19th century Jules Verne Sci-Fi voyages to the perfect future of The Jetsons (and their primitive counterparts The Flintstones); From Fritz Lang's Futurist inspired Metropolis (1927) to The Star Trek Enterprise's search for the final frontier, man's love of Modernism and Primitivism have run parallel in space (Mars and the Moon) as it has on earth (the remote islands of The Polynesian Triangle). Captain James Cook desired to go "farther than any other man has been before". He discovered many remote islands as well as sailing to Antarctica and being the first to chart parts of Alaska, the final frontier of the Age of Discovery. Ironically we ended up putting a man on the moon decades before we discovered the last tribes in the mountains of Papua New Guinea2. Just as Captain Cook's Endeavor sailed uncharted seas, Star Trek Captain James T. Kirk's Enterprise took voyages into outer space to discover "strange new worlds, uncharted civilizations, and exotic people" and "boldly go where no man has been before!" 1. Mike Mantler and Carla Bley, being the only two non-leader members of the Guild, had decided to organize an orchestra made up of musicians both inside and outside the Guild. This group, then known as the Jazz Composer's Guild Orchestra and consisting of eleven musicians, began rehearsals in the downtown loft of painter Mike Snow for its premiere performance at the Guild's Judson Hall series of concerts in December 1964. The orchestra, set up in a large circle in the center of the hall, played "Communications no.3" by Mike Mantler and "Roast" by Carla Bley. The concert was so successful musically that the leaders decided to continue to write for the group and to give performances at the Guild's new headquarters, a triangular studio on top of the Village Vanguard, called the Contemporary Center. In early March 1965 at the first of these concerts, which were presented in a workshop style, the group had been enlarged to fifteen musicians and the pieces played were "Radio" by Carla Bley and "Communications no.4" (subtitled "Day") by Mike Mantler.

  • An Autocratic Approach to Music Copyright?: the Means Through Which Frank Zappa Translated and Adapted Both His Own and Other Composers’ Music
Performa ’09 – Conference on Performance Studies University of Aveiro, May 2009 An Autocratic Approach to Music Copyright?: The means through which Frank Zappa translated and adapted both his own and other composers’ music Paul Carr, University of Glamorgan [email protected] Aims In preparation for an examination of how and why such a diverse range of tribute bands and ensembles are so intent on continuing to experiment with Zappa’s music despite the threat of legal challenges, and an investigation into the various philosophical, legal and industrial factors behind why the ZFT are so intent on selectively prohibiting performances of his music, this paper will discuss the ironic means through which Zappa expressed himself consistently through both recorded and live performance during his 27 years in the public eye. Context Since the death of Frank Zappa in 1993, there has been an ongoing legal battle between the Zappa Family Trust (ZFT) and the so called ‘tribute bands’ that are determined to continue translating his music through live and recorded mediums. It could be argued that these ensembles effectively not only pay direct homage to Zappa’s legacy by interpreting his music in numerous innovative ways, but also keep his memory alive by interfacing with both his long standing audience, and with a younger generation who may not be aware of his music. The most famous of the rock-based ensembles is entitled Zappa Plays Zappa and has the unusual credit of being ‘legally’ sanctified to perform his music live. This legality is no coincidence, as the band is headed by Zappa's eldest son Dweezil and features the 'Vault Master' responsible for compiling the legal recordings heralding from the ZFT - Joe Travers on drums.

CRITICAL ATTITUDE TOWARD THE FOOTSTEP OF GOOGIE ARCHITECTURE ON PARAMETRIC ARCHITECTURE ATA CHOKHACHIAN AND ABOLFAZL DEHGHANMONGABADI Eastern Mediterranean University Architecture Department, Gazimagusa, North Cyprus Email address: [email protected] Email address: [email protected] Abstract. Advent of machinery age, altering in human needs and lifestyle has changed the pattern of architecture. This pattern is in close relation with different environmental, contextual, behavioral and theoretical aspects of dwellers. With a glance to the history of design, in 1940s the new style of architecture came up which was called Googie architecture. It was a movement of modern architecture, a subdivision of futurist architecture influenced by car culture and the Space Age. This style was alive up to mid- 1960s but in its short life, it put a big impact on the appearance of the cities and buildings. Furthermore, in recent years the new style of architecture named Parametricism has started to take shape and accordingly the formal appearance is very close to Googie architecture. Also parametric architecture is out birth of technology and the idea of communication and futurism. The research is questioning the characteristics of parametric and Googie architecture with scrutinizing the origins and main gestures of these styles in society and culture of the period that they exist in. the research tries to figure out failures of Googie style in its own period and parallel to this, it give suggestions to implement and transform qualitative parameters in the design process by means of adapting pattern language in design process, applying parametric design thinking and simplexity in design systems.

  • Third Wave Feminism and the Powerpuff Girls Evie Kendal Introduction the Popular Children's
There’s No One Perfect Girl: Third Wave Feminism and The Powerpuff Girls Evie Kendal Introduction The popular children’s television series, The Powerpuff Girls, was originally conceived by animator Craig McCracken under the name The Whoopass Girls in 1992.1 Following a name change and three alternative pilot epi- sodes, the series was picked up by the Cartoon Network and ran from 1995 through to 2005. During this time the show won several awards, including two Primetime Emmy awards for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation (2000 and 2005), and two Annie awards for Production Design and Musical Score in an Animated Series (2001).2 In this article I will be exploring The Powerpuff Girls from a feminist perspective, focusing on what is unique about this series and where it is positioned in popular media culture, before addressing some of the common criticisms of the show and identifying some of its major strengths. It will be my contention that The Powerpuff Girls embraces third-wave feminist ideology, with its focus on “Girl Power” and consumerism, while also abandoning the more individual- istic aspects of this brand of feminism by exploring the meaning of sister- hood and female empowerment through community. COLLOQUY text theory critique 24 (2012). © Monash University. www.arts.monash.edu.au/ecps/colloquy/journal/issue024/kendal.pdf ░ Third Wave Feminism and The Powerpuff Girls 235 Background: The relationship between the second and third waves of feminism According to Lise Shapiro Sanders, one of the major distinguishing features of third-wave feminism is the privileging of the “diversity of women’s experi- ence over the similarities amongst women,” with a particular focus on ad- dressing the inadequacies of second-wave ideology to deal with women’s experience beyond its “white, middle-class biases.”3 In this way, women of colour and those from the developing world were recruited into the fight for equality, while at the same time a radical reclamation of the symbols asso- ciated with traditional femininity was initiated.
