The Balak Mata Centre of Jamia Millia Islamia, located in the vicinity of Jama Masjid in , provides education and vocational training to deprived Muslim girls and women. The Centre runs from an old two-storeyed structure, which, according to a ‘DDA Urban Heritage Certificate Award’ given to the building in 1993, was used by Shah Jahan as “a home” while the was being built. At one point of time, a Mughal prince’s begum used it as her residence. Later, the last Mughal Emperor gave it to one of his grandsons. The building, which has undergone many alterations, follows the traditional Indian architectural pattern of a courtyard surrounded by rooms.
