VOLUNTEERING IS A GREAT WAY TO BE A PART OFtemple THE COMMUNITY If you like to have fun, make new friends, and make a difference, then you’ll love volunteering at Temple Israel.

“Over the past 20 years, I’ve volunteered for Youth Group activities, folded and stuffed thousands of envelopes, baked for events, renovated the Sanctuary entrance garden, and power washed the sidewalks, just to name a few. The rewards of volunteering at TI have been heartwarming and priceless, and I have made some of my closest friends here. I love that I am able to give back to my congregational community by helping people. Give it a try; every time is a new adventure!” Judy Lewis Volunteer

These experiences have given me a better understanding of Temple Israel, a way to share my professional skills with my synagogue, and a great opportunity to meet and make new Temple member and staff friends who I otherwise may not have had the opportunity to meet. Based upon my own experience, I know you will receive a great deal of satisfaction serving on a committee here at TI.” Above: Temple Israel’s Service Squad volunteering to help seniors at Covenant Place move into and set up their apartments Neil Marglous Neil Marglous, Social Action Committee Chair 4 th from left Social Action (Tikkun Olam) Committee Chair

FROM THE CLERGY Rabbi Amy Feder & Rabbi Michael Alper [email protected] [email protected]

It has been a celebratory few months at Temple Israel. Since the with you regularly and truly get to know you in your everyday new Jewish year began, we have had the opportunity to officiate lives. Yet even those of you we only see twice a year, or even at five different weddings of former Confirmation students (plus less -- still there is the connection we are able to build with you a few more who weren’t students!) It’s a sign, for sure, that we at these incredibly holy, precious lifecycle moments. We are here are officially not ‘those new rabbis’ anymore; the idea that we’ve to be guides and witnesses through those moments, helping you been able to officiate at multiple significant milestones in these say the right words, hold on when there’s joy, and let go when young peoples’ lives over a period of years is clearly a reminder it’s time. We are here to make a difficult moment less painful by that we’ve been here longer than it seems. infusing it with holiness, and make a happy moment more joyful by recognizing its enormity. We get to witness and share in these moments with you, even if we are only there for those few hours Yet it’s also those moments that prove why being a pulpit rabbi or days by your side, and it is an incomparable blessing that we is one of the most awesome jobs in the world, in the most don’t take for granted. literal meaning of the word. To stand with a teenage girl on the bimah at her Confirmation and recite the priestly blessing, only to repeat the same blessing to her and her groom under When we name children at TI, we often say to them (and their the chuppah years later — it is a remarkable, awe inspiring parents, more importantly) that the blessing we give to them will experience. And neither of us is too shy to say that we shed be the same words we’ll say at their Consecration, B’nai Mitzvah, quite a few happy tears as we celebrated with these young Confirmation and under the chuppah. It’ll be a few more years people and their families. until we can truly say we’ve been there for all of those moments in one person’s life, but we are so looking forward to it, and to each little moment along the way. After having been here for about a decade (Rabbi Amy for 11 years, Rabbi Michael for 9 years) we have seen tremendous milestones in the lives of our congregants. Children we named are preparing for their B’nai Mitzvah. Several members of our staff were once students in our classes and members of the youth group. And yes, there have been those we’ve shared Rabbi Amy Rabbi MichaMichaelel a chuppah with whom we’ve later laid to rest. There were miraculous recoveries that turned out to be far more short lived than we had prayed. Needless to say, we shed just as many tears of sorrow as we do of joy.

But it’s these moments that remind us of why anyone would belong to a congregation in the first place, not just serve as its leaders. There are those of you we see every week, at Shabbat services and at school, in adult education classes and schmoozing on the bridge. We love the opportunity to interact
