EDITOR-IN-CHIEF We are a city of great diversity and we are a city that celebrates our many forms of diversity. Yet, the fact remains that “generational” diversity is Rev. I. LaTrell Bailey an area, in which, a noticeable divide exists. According to the 2016 U.S. Census, the median age of the City of Saginaw is 35.5 years, making Millennials the largest demographic of our population. However, most Millennials feel that they have no voice or seat at the decision table when it comes to issues that affect both their present and future state of being and living. As the Millennials move up in the world, one of the principal challenges facing us, as a community, is being intentional and specific in embracing them and providing leadership opportunities that fulfill their desire to give back and be an active part of something greater than themselves. Millennials are profoundly socially-conscious and care, deeply, about the world around them. Thus, community, philanthropy and volunteerism are of the utmost importance to them. 1) Millennials are relational, 2) Millennials want to be heard, 3) Millennials want to be mentored; all three, of which, are qualities that comprise the strong foundation of a leader. With all this understood, it’s imperative that our community, as a whole, recognize and acknowledge that Millennials aren’t our leaders of tomorrow. On the contrary, they are our leaders of “right now”. And we are duty- bound to create a culture that allows them to flourish. Then, intentionally invest in putting appropriate leadership development practices in place that encourage, and empower, them to lead us into the future. That starts with us recognizing that the world around us is changing, and the sector of yesteryear is quickly disappearing. And if Saginaw is to have any hope of sustainability for our posterity, providing place and space for Millennials to be actively-engaged in the leadership of our city can no longer be considered an option of tomorrow. It must become our obligation and priority of today. - Rev. I. LaTrell Bailey CO-PUBLISHER MARKETING MANAGERS Jerome Buckley, Jr. Don Bivens III Brittney Jackson 301 E.
