There have been various estimates of the prevalence of hepatitis B and C infections in Nigeria. Recent studies have shown the prevalence to be lower than previously reported. The different populations studied might be responsible for this. It is important to have a real population data that would inform the policies to be adopted for eradication. We set out to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and pattern of hepatitis B and C in Benue State, Central Nigeria. Four thousand and five (4,005) subjects, aged 1 year and older, were selected through a multistage random sampling to represent all parts of the state. Trained health workers administered a validated questionnaire. Rapid test kits were standardized and used in determining the prevalence of the respective viruses. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibodies to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) were found to be positive in 5% and 1%, respectively, of subjects screened. The prevalence varied from one local government area to another, with HBsAg being 8% in the highest to 2% in the lowest LGC, and anti-HCV being 3% in the highest and 0% in the lowest. -

And Waya, J.I4. 1 (Department of Botany, Federal University Lafia, Nigeria) 2 (Department of Crop and Environmental Protection, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria) 3 (Department of Biological Sciences, Federal UniversityDutsin-Ma, Nigeria) 4(Department of Biological Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi) Abstract: Farmers’ fields were surveyed for incidence and severity of various diseases of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) in Benue State in the rainy seasons of 2012 and 2013. Data on farmers’ characteristics in four major tomato growing Local Government Areas (LGAs) was collected through semi-structured interview of 40 heads of major tomato growing households, and analyzed by simple percentages. Disease incidence was assessed using the quadrat method. Results revealed that Majority of commercial tomato growers in the study area were female (65%), above 30 years of age (72.5%), attained mostly ordinary level of education (70%), married (90%), with a workforce of 6-10 (55%) and a tomato growing experience of 6-10 years (27%). All tomato farmers (100%) in the study were completely reliant on local tomato varieties. Tarka LGA recorded the highest and significantly different (P<0.05) disease incidence (80.80%) followed by Buruku (76.04%), Gboko (71.50%) and lastly Ushongo (62.69%). Disease was highest in the month of July and symptoms progressed faster in the year 2012. -

The activity entails collecting data in four states in Nigeria, precisely in Ogun State (Odeda Local Government Area - LGA, Ijebu-Ode LGA, Ewekoro LGA, and Odogbolu LGA), Edo State (Ikpoba Okha LGA, Oredo LGA, Egor LGA), Benue State (Agatu LGA, Guma LGA, Gwer-East LGA, Gwer-West LGA, Logo LGA, Okpokwu LGA, Ogbadigbo LGA, and Kwande LGA), and Nasarawa State (Awe LGA, Doma LGA, Lafia LGA, Obi LGA). Ultimately, HI anticipates the consultant to consolidate the LIBs based on cost similarities in the States, LGAs or location (Rural/Urban). P Department of Social and Environmental Forestry, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria *Corresponding Author: Ikyaagba, E.T, Department of Social and Environmental Forestry, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria, Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT This study was conducted to determine the types of land use activities prevalent in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, as well as their impact on vegetation cover of the study area. The land use practices considered were those associated with agriculture and urbanization. Six classes including forest, grassland, cultivated area, urban area, bare surfaces and water were considered for assessment and classification of images by carrying out field work and using topographical maps. The magnitude of change of forest area for 20years between 1988 to 2008 showed that forest decreased by -175.40. km2 representing a change (49.99%) of the total change for the period. Forest had the highest annual rate of change of 9.99% while farm land had the least annual rate of change of 1.18%. The period witnessed an increase in other vegetation and built up area. The land increased by 50.26 km2 representing 14.33% of the total change, while built up increased by76.35 (21.76%). These changes could be attributed to the urbanization, increase in commercial activities and increase in population, agricultural activities and amongst others. -

The North Central of Nigeria has been griped with Herdsmen insurgency, the problem of insecurity that have almost affected the Federal system of government in Nigeria, were unity in diversity is no longer seen as hallmark for forming a federal state. The main objective of the study is to investigate causes and effects of Herders insurgency and its implication on Federalism in Nigeria. The Study employed secondary sources of data collection, using theoretical framework of conflict theory as an analytical tool. One major finding is that, Herders insurgency is due to the influence of Boko Haram, which has it negative implication for the Co-ordinate existence of Nigeria Federalism. We therefore, recommend restructuring of the Federal System and a transparent conflict resolution means by the state, to encourage trust and confidence among the federating units, for national integration and unity.
