Zoological Studies 33(1): 44-64. A total of 42 species belonging to 9 genera and 2 subfamilies of the family Muraenidae are indigenous to Taiwan. The 12 species: Enchelycore bikiniensis, Gymnothorax brunneus, G. javanicus, G_ margaritophorus, G. melatremus, G. nudivomer, G. reevesii, G. zonipectis, Strophidon sathete, Uropterygius macrocephalus, U. micropterus, and U. tigrinus are first reported in this paper. The 7 species: Enchelycore lichenosa, E. schismatorhynchus, Gymnothorax buroensis, G. hepaticus, G. meleagris, G. richardsoni and Siderea thyrsoidea whose Taiwan existence was doubted or lacked specimens in the past are also recorded. Additionly, many species misidentifications or improper use of junior synonyms in previously literature stand corrected in this paper. Two previously recorded species Gymnothorax monostigmus and G. polyuranodon are, lacking Taiwan specimens, excluded. Color photographs, dentition patterns, synopsis, key, diagnosis, and remarks for all 42 species are provided in this paper. Key words: Moray eels, Fish taxonomy, Fish fauna, Anguilliformes. The fangtooth moray, Enchelycore anatina (Lowe, 1838), native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean but also known from eastern sections of the Mediterranean, is recorded for the fi rst time from Maltese coastal waters in the central Mediterranean. This record is the westernmost one within the Mediterranean and the observed E. anatina individual co-occurred with an individual of Muraena helena Linnaeus, 1758. E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract The first Red-Sea Indo-Pacific alien moray eel in the Eastern Mediterranean is reported here. A single specimen of Gymnothorax reticularis was captured by a commercial bottom-trawl vessel off the northern coast of Israel. Morphological and anatomical similarities with the single known Red-Sea specimen raise an old taxonomic dilemma. Key words: Mediterranean Sea, alien species, Gymnothorax reticularis Introduction The Levant Basin is regarded today as the world's most invaded marine ecosystem, being highly subjected to Indo- Pacific faunal invasion (Edelist et al. 2012). The number of reported alien Indo-Pacific species of fish is currently above 90 and rapidly approaching its hundredth record (Galil and Goren, in press). The moray eels (family Muraenidae) are the second most diverse family in the order of true eels, Anguiliformes (Smith 2012). At present there are about 200 valid species belonging to 15 genera (Smith 2012; Froese & Pauly 2013). The genus Gymnothorax, Bloch 1795 represents more than half of the world's muraenids (124 species) and is regarded as a polyphyletic assemblage of ungrouped moray eels (Smith 2012). -

Sixty-one individuals of G. minor were collected from the East China Sea and the South China Sea. This species was previously reported as Gymnothorax reticularis Bloch, 1795 in China because of the similarity in external shape and color. Gymnothorax minor can be easily distinguished from G. reticularis by its color pattern of 18–20 irregular dark brown vertical bars and the body having scattered small brown spots. -

Australian and New Zealand moray eel type specimens in museums have been re-examined, their identities established, and brief descriptions of the specimens written. A key to the 59 muraenid species of Australia and New Zealand is presented. Ten species that have remained relatively unknown or inadequately described are redescribed and illustrated: Gymnothorax annasona Whitley, 1937; G. atolli (Pietschmann, 1935); G. cribroris Whitley, 1932a; G. longinquus (Whitley, 1948); G. nubilus (Richardson, 1848); G. obesus (Whitley, 1932a); G. porphyreus (Guichenot, 1848); G. prasinus (Richardson, 1848); G. prionodon Ogilby, 1895; and G. woodwardi McCulloch, 1912. A new species from northern Australia is described as G. cephalospilus, and one from southern Australia is described as G. austrinus. New synonymies are proposed: Muraena helena australis Richardson, 1848, and Muraena vorax Ogilby, 1907 = Muraena helena Linnaeus, 1758; Muraena euptera Günther, 1870 = Gymnothorax nubilus Richardson, 1848; Muraena tuhua Griffin, 1933, and Gymnothorax griffini Whitley & Phillipps, 1939 = Gymnothorax obesus (Whitley, 1932a); Gymnothorax maculaepinnis Bleeker, 1866, and Gymnothorax leecote Scott, 1965 = Gymnothorax prasinus (Richardson, 1848); and Muraena mieroszewskii Steindachner, 1896, Gymnothorax leucostigma Jordan & Richardson, 1909, Gymnothorax nirosus Tanaka, 1918, Muraena shirleyi Griffin, 1933, and Lycodontis wooliensis Whitley, 1968 = Gymnothorax prionodon Ogilby, 1895. -
