Pride, Purpose, Progress 2 Message from the Chair

Dear SRJC supporters, alumni and friends, On behalf of the Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation Board, I’d like to extend sincere thanks for your support and to highlight the deep bond between our Sonoma County community and the College. As Santa Rosa Junior College approaches its 100th Anniversary in 2018, your support and connection to SRJC are more important than ever. For nearly one hundred years, Santa Rosa Junior College has been a significant part of both Sonoma County and the California community colleges. It is a real challenge to find anyone in our county who doesn’t have some connection to the College, whether it be as a student, alumnus, or proud parent, grandparent, friend or employer of a SRJC student or graduate. Throughout its history, the College’s inspiring faculty and administrators have ignited students’ passions and supported them in launching impressive and worthwhile careers. Many met significant others in a class at SRJC or made friends for life here. Many who are grateful for the impact SRJC had on them choose to give back to the College by funding scholarships or programs to help others succeed. In this issue we share the remarkable story of SRJC alumnus David Del Monte who, together with his wife Dede, made a transformational gift to the College through a charitable remainder trust. You can learn more about the Del Montes and the inspiration for their generous gift in this edition of the JC Connect. Another extraordinary story is about a young alumnus named Duc Pham who established a scholarship opportunity for science students who can earn research experience alongside him while he completes his doctoral thesis at Cornell University. Read more about Duc (and the first scholarship recipient) in this issue. You’ll also have the opportunity to read more about the SRJC 100th Anniversary Campaign that was officially launched in June 2016. We invite you to join us in honoring the past, supporting the present, and funding a bright future for SRJC students and the entire community as we celebrate this important milestone. Thank you for helping us to keep SRJC as the beating heart of our Sonoma County community, a place where we gather together to support education that changes lives and society for the better. Sincerely,

Kent Seegmiller Chair, SRJC Foundation Board

During a special meeting on November 15, 1917, the association sent Exchange Bank a recommendation to form a junior college to the Santa Rosa Board of Frank P. Doyle Library Endowment Education. Santa Rosa Junior College was formally approved by the Board in spring 1918. For nearly 100 years Santa Rosa Junior College has been providing Darius & Sarah Anderson high-quality and affordable education, workforce training, and community Santa Rosa Junior College Doyle Promise programs for college students, lifelong learners, and local businesses. Transformative Gift Honors Moving SRJC Experience

Always humble, David and Dede say that the gift is truly a “win-win” for the College and for them. They say that though the gift was made with charitable intent, it also serves a practical purpose – the CRUT allows them a charitable income tax deduction and an annual lifetime income during retirement. They say that this was a great option for them because “it is a well-managed, positive way to make a real difference.” David said “We appreciate that our support will reach wider than an individual scholarship, and that it allows us to leave a legacy to be proud of. My SRJC experience had a profound impact on me, so there is emotional ownership in our gift. I know firsthand what a valuable asset the College is, and I’m proud to be a part of that.” SRJC Alumnus and his wife David & Dede Del Monte David’s connection to the College began over 50 years ago Dede and David Del Monte have many interests and in 1961 when David enrolled as a student at SRJC.
