Penelitian ini berjudul “A Description of Moral Values in Maroon 5’s Selected album”. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan nilai moral dan perumpaan nilai moral dalam kehidupan sehari-hari yang tergambar pada Maroon 5’s Selected song. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskripsi analisis. Sumber data pada penelitian ini adalah 5 lagu pilihan dari album, sebagai berikut : (1) This Love, (2) She Will Be Love, (3) One More Night, (4) Moves Like Jagger, (5) Daylight. Selama mengerjakan penelitian ini, penulis mengerjakan sumber data dengan berbagai langkah : membaca lima lirik lagu pilihan dari album tersebut dari internet sebagai referensi guna untuk memahami lebih lanjut artian dari lirik dalam memahami nilai moral dan perumpamaan nilai moral yang terkandung di dalam album. Setelah mendeskripsikan nilai moral, penulis menemukan beberapa nilai moral dalam Maroon 5’s selected song, yaitu : love and affection dan kejujuran.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRACT This study entitled “A Description of Moral Values in Maroon 5’s Selected Song”. The purpose of this study is to describes the moral values and the significance of moral values in life that portrayed in Maroon 5’s selected song. This study applied descriptive analysis method. The source data from this study are five selected song from the album, they are : (1) This Love, (2) She Will Be Love, (3), One More Night, (4) Moves Like Jagger, (5) Daylight. While doing this study, the writer was analyzing the data by following steps : Reading the five selected songs lyrics from the internet as a reference to understanding the lyrics more and then the writer analyzing kinds of moral values and the significance of moral values that is contains from the album. After combat in analyzing the moral values, the writer found several moral values that contains in the Maroon 5’s selected song, they are : love and affection, and honesty. 1.1 Background of the Study

As human that living in this world together amongs the others, definietly human need something to use if want still survive and to continue the journey of live. For this case of matter, as the times goes by human create something to live and one of them is language. Language is the very own of human being have and it is the best and the most thing that human have made in the whole history. Because of that, we can talk to each other, understand one of another, and we can expressing what we feel through the language. As Iswahyuni (1998:1) says that language is a medium to express the idea, opinion, and feeling in the science and education world. On the same line Supriyanto (1991:1) says that language is arbitrary system of articulated sound made of by a group human as means of carrying on their society.

Human cannot stand alone without cooperating with other people.

Because human is a social creature that need someone to accompany them.

One human need to making contact to one another and here the important key of language takes place. As a social creature, human create a cery complex social structure that composed of many cooperating and competing groups, either from families and kindship networks to political states. The social interactions between human to human have estabilished an extremely wide variety of values, such as norms, and rituals which together from the basic of human society.

While auditory communication is doing through poetry and music. In this globalization era has brings both positive and negatif effect. It gives us a very great development in science, technology, economy, education and art.

This development of art runs so fast and music or song is one of the related branches of art that has big influence for the people. Because on these days, people use song to express their thoughts, experiences, emotions, and faith. William (1824:2) has stated “The only reality in music is the state of mind which it induces in the listener”.

As an entertainment that can tells a story by giving mental image and giving the illusion, music i now taking the very important place in every values of people and it has touched human heart and life in this modern era. Music represent the bad or good of human attitude. Bad attitude it is represent of human evil attitude such as agression, anger, betrayal, blame, cowardice, depression, dishonesty, envy, greed, hatred, intolerance, irresponsibility, jealously etc. Beside that, good attitude is the opposite of bad attitude such as freedom, friendly, focused, goodwill, hard working, honest, humble, tolerance, mature, optimisctic, responsibility etc.

On the same boat, music can also invites the hearer and welcomes the hearer into the new world or new life and it can molded the hearer by listening the lyrics of the song. Music can give an effects too to the hearer.

From music we can also hear a moral value from the lyric that the singer want to delivered to the hearers. Moral values refer to a set of principles that guide and individual on how to evaluate right versus wrong. People generally apply moral values to justify decisions, interens, and actions, and it also defines the personal character of a person.

As an of literary work, music is and artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner.

As already be known, every song must have lyric. Lyric as quoted from the http:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyric is “a set of the words that accompany music, either by speaking or singing”. Commonly, there are many bands or solo singers. One of bands is maroon 5. Maroon 5 (1994- present) is an American pop rock band from Los Angeles, California. It currently consists of lead vocalist Adam Levine, keyboardist and rhytm guitarist Jesse Carmichael, Bassist Mickey Madden, lead guitarist James

Valentine, drummer Matt Flynn, keyboardist PJ Morton and multi- instrumentalist Sam Farrar.

From discussion above, the author found a very interesting to do a research about the moral values in song lyrics. From the song lyrics the author found a pretty beautiful message that can be a moral values and we can learn from it for our social activities. Therefore, the author takes the

1.2 Problem of the Study

1. What are the moral values found in Maroon 5’s songs lyric ?

1.3 Purpose of the Study

1. To describe the Moral Values in Maroon 5’s songs lyric.

2. To describe the significance of moral values in life portrayed in the

lyric.

1.4 Scope of the Study

This study limits only in the moral values from Maroon 5’s

Selected song album. The moral values that are going to be discussed in this study are the standards that Maroon 5’s want to share in the Selected song album and portrayed on the lyrics which is love to God or love to environment or love to human to human or may be refers to free sex wich is it is very commonly on these days. These standards are covering the belief to judge what is right or wrong, good or bad, moral or immoral stated in the lyrics of the song. Out of twelve songs from the album the

Be Loved, (3) One More Night, (4) Moves Like Jagger, (5) Daylight.

1.5 Methods of the Study

This study applied descriptive qualitative research methods. The methods of research that will be used in this writing is applied in determining qualitative data source. Data source it has in this paper are : firstly, data source is taken from the song lyrics Maroon 5’s songs.

Secondly, the author take some references from the internet to get more information. First, the writer listen and try to understand song lyrics

Maroon 5’s from CD. Second, search the lyrics from internet. Then the author reading and making some notes until making conclusion.

2.1 Song

All human being is deserve to hear a music because music is universal. We all listen to the music regardless of our age or social status and our favorite genre of music. Cook (1989:1) that is certain that composers have set out express emotion, and that listeners have felt to be present in composers music since music does have an emotive effect on the listeners.

Hindemith in cooke (1989:15) that composers know by experience that certain emotional reaction on the listener’s part. Cooke (1989:19) covered that reaction which music evokes are the images, memories of feeling. In related to music, there are two branches of music which is instrumental music and another one is song.

Instrumental music is refers to the music that is perfomed only by one or several kinds of music instruments without any lead vocal. On the other side, song is a short metrical composition that played by one or several instruments and it has lead vocal which accompanies with lyric.

Somg is combination of lyric and melody. The lyrics on the song refers to lines of sentence that sung by a singer.

According to little (1970:174) lyric derived from Greek “Lyricos” meaning “singing to the lyres:, “the rhytm of the entire globe written out like poetry”.

To the ancient Greeks, Lyricos was appropriate to the lyric. That elegant stringed instrument was highly regarded by the Greeks and was used to accompany intensely personal poetry that revealed the thoughts and feelings of poet. When the adjective lyric, a descendant of lyricos was adopted into English in the 1500s, It too referred to things pertaining or adapted to the lyre.

Initialy, it was applied to poetic forms (such as elegies, odes, or sonnets) that expressed strong emotion, to poets who wrote such works, or to things that were meant to be sung; overtime, it was extended to anything musical or rhapsodic. Nowdays, lyric is also used as a noun naming either a type of poem or the words of a sung.

2.3 Values

Values is the important element in lyrics. Values the picture of what is good and bad which important in our life. This live forces us to make a choices. Since the early Greeks, men have written about the theoritical side of the problem of values. The word axiology derived from a Greek word meaning “value” is coming to be used for the study of the

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA general theory of value, including the origin, the nature, the classification, and the place of values in the world.

Goodge (1997:4) says that group member share, these standards are used to judge whether something is good or bad, beautiful or ugly, right or wrong, moral or immoral. In several word, moral values is a standards of attitude based on the determinationpf what is good and wrong that regarded by those who make the standards moral.

Salam (2002:2) say that moral has the same meaning with ethics, which contains the lesson about good and bad of our conduct.

According to Barcalow (1994:3), moral issues involve a way of behaving and having character, they are unavoidably coming in all shapes and sizes. Basically, moral issues arise when the choice that people take will affect the good attitude of other by increasing or decreasing.

Edward (1967:151) says, there are three kinds of motivates which lead men to act morally, that is, to obey the moral rules of their society, enlightened self-interest, respect for rules, and other regarding motivates.

Morality must be place on the every human heart because if human does not have morality, human will not be respected by other people. It will be so easy to socialize with people around and will be accepted in the community if human have good morality. Because if someone have good

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA morality should have the ability to consider good and bad behavior because no one can live without other person on their side.

2.4 Moral Values

Moral values are the standards of good and evil, which govern an individuals behavior and choices. Ursery (2002:2) says, moral values are the people beliefs about what is important in life. Individual’s morals may derive from society and government, religion, or self. When moral value derive from society and government they, of necessity, may change as the laws and morals of the society change.

Moral values also derive from within one’s ownself. This is clearly demonstrated in the behavior of older infants and young todlers. If a child has been forbidden to touch or take a certain object early on, they knoe enugh to slowly look over their shoulder to see ifthey are being observed before touching said object. Here is no need for this behavior to be taught; it is instinctive. Once, however any from of discipline is applied to modify the child’s behavior, the childnow gains the capacity within himself to distinguish his right behavior from his wrong behavior. Now, the child can make correct choices based on his own knowledge.

The choices that are made by an individual from childhood to adulthood are between forbidden and acceptable, kind or cruel, generous

do what is forbidden. If this individual possesses moral values, going

against them usually produces guilt.

Moral value is value that can’t be separated with other values. Bertens

(1997:142-147) says, every values will get quality if it has relation with

other values, Moral values are characterized:

1. Responsibility

Moral values related to the human person who is responsible. A moral

value only is realized in actions that are fully the responsibility of the

person concerned. Humans themselves becom

2. Moral value is related with pure heart

All values need to make it real. Because it has persuasive power, it should

be practice. For example, aesthetic value, it should be practiced, play

music composition or others. After that the result of it, painting want to be

showed, and music want to be listened. To make moral value to be real, it

can be appealed from pure heart. One of special characteristics of moral

values is this value will effect voice of pure heart to accuse us if oppose

moral value and praise us if make moral value.

3. Obligation

Moral value obligates us absolutely and it can’t be compromised. Other

values need to be real and admitted, for example, aesthetic value.

indifferent people can’t we blame. Moral value obligates us as such,

without requirement. For example, honesty orders us to return thing that

borrowed, like or not, because moral value contains an imperative

category. In other value for example, if badminton player want to

bechampion, he/she must try hard. It’s a must to be champion, but there is

a limitation.

4. Formality

Moral value is not stand-alone without other value. Moral values did not

separate with other values. Moral values are nothing without other values.

It is form of formality. Max Scheler mentioned in Bertens that moral

values “get a lift” to other values.

2.4.1 TYPES OF MORAL VALUES : a. Bravery

Bravery is face (something involving possible unfortunate or disastrous

consequences) or endure (as hardship) use with self-control and mastery of

tear and often with a particular objective in vie. Bravery is able to meet

danger or endure pain or hardship without giving in to fear. Bravery is

arising from or suggestive or mastery of fear and intelligent use of

faculties especially under duress (Webster : 1981 p.269)

Enthusiasm is strong excitement of feeling on behalf of a cause of subject,

something that inspires or is pursued or regarded with ardent zeal or

fervor. Enthusiast is a person who is or believers to himself to be inspired

or possessed by divine power or spirit, or a person who is visionary,

extravagant, or excessively zealous in his religious views or emotion.

While enthusiastic is relating to enthusiasm or inspired preaching.

Enthusiasm is having an ardent, reception, responsive, temperament or

tending to give oneself wholly to whatever engages one’s interest or

liking. (Webster : 1981 p.757) c. Kindhearted

Kimd is the equivalent of what has been offered ore received. Kind is

applying more often to the disposition to symphony and helpfulness.

Kindly is stressing more the expression of the sympathetic, helpfull nature,

mood or impulse (a kind person with a kindly interest in the problem of

other). Kindhearted is having sympathetic native : humane,

compassionate. Kindheartedness is the quality or state of being

kindhearted. (Webster : 1981 p.1243).

d. Honesty

Honesty is estimable character; fairness and straightfowardness of conduct

or adherence to the fact. Honesty is freedom from subterfuge or duplicity,

truthfulness, and sincerity. (Webster : 1981 p.1086).

Love is fell affection for. Love is a communications code word for the

letter. Love is feel referent adoration for god or for other people. Affection

is a action of affection or state of being affected. Affection is kind feeling

tender attachment : love, good, will. Affection is a strong emotion or

passion (as anger, fear or hatred); feeling aspect of consciousness (as in

pleasue or displeasure); to bend of mind : feeling or natural impulse

swaying the mind : propensity, disposition (Webster :1981 p. 35) f. Loyalty

Loyalty is loyal manner. Loyalness is the quality, state, or an instance of

being loyal ; fidelity or tenacious adherence. Loyal is faithful and the

devoted to a private person ; faithful or tenacious in adherence to a cause,

ideal, practice or custom. (Webster : 1981 p. 1342). g. Peace-loving

Peace is harmony in human or personal relation. A mental or spiritual

condition marked by freedomg from disturbance or oppressive thoughts or

emotion. (Webster :1981 p. 1660) loving word is from love, a lover

section or attitude (Webster : 1981 p.1340). h. Perseverance

Perseverance is the action or the fact or an instance of presevering,

continued or streadfast pursuit or prosecution of an undertaking or aim.

Perseverance is the condition or power of persevering, persistance in the

Strong is able to bear or endure; able to with-stand stress or violence;

having or exbiting moral or intelectual force, endurence,or vigor.

(Webster: 1981 p.2265). belief is a state or habit of mind in which trust,

confidence, reliance, is a place in some person or thing. Belief is

something believed, statement or body of statement held by the advocates

of any class of views; conviction of the truth of some statement or the

reality of some being or phenomenon, especially when based on an

examination of the ground for accepting it as true or real.(Webster : 1981

p.200).

b) Describing the meaning of each slang.

c) Classifying the Moral Values in term of type.

From the lyric above we can describe This Love song is a song that describe a man who does not want to lose his girlfriend. He trying everything that he could to get her girlfriend back to his arms. This song is related to love and affection moral values.

3.2 Findings

After describing the moral values in Maroon 5’s selected song, the

result are :

1. In Maroon 5’s selected song, moral values that reflected to

human’s life is about affairs to another person. Especially in

loving or carrying person such as, honesty and love and

affection.

2. From the lyric we can see about human affairs especially in

love how to love, the effects of love, how to reronciliation the

problem in love to build a strong chemistry between a couple.

to treat someone and how to get among the mob. Because love

can make the world in peace.

3.3 The Significance of Moral Values in the Lyric

The significance of moral values in the lyric that portrayed in the

also honesty. So, the significance of moral values in the lyrics are :

Love and affection is a communications feel referent adoration

for God or for other people. In the Maroon 5’s selected song,

love and affection is portrayed as a love to other people or to

opposite gender.

Most people fall in love at some point or the other in their lives.

While it is a popular understanding that love brings two people

loser in their lives and understanding, very few do reflect on

the fact that love can significantly change one’s life,

song. Honesty is reflected to a facet of moral character that

connotes positive and virtuous attributes. Honesty is the

anonym of true self. True self is our best self. It is a spiritual

4.1 Conclusions

The conclusions are as following:

a) There were some moral values that found on Maroon 5’s selected

song, they are : love and affection and honesty.

b) The significance of moral values that portrayed in the lyrics refers

to human’s life which is reflected to love. We are living in this

world with love moral that placedin our heart. Love guided us to

loving other people or to loving our nature. Love is very essential

that we must have because without love, than the world would be

in chaostic situation.

4.2 Suggestions

Suggestions are stated as the following:

a) The writer can concluded that from the Maroon 5’s selected song is

a very interesting album to do a research about moral

values.because it is has moral values that reflected to love oppsite

gender or toother people and to nature.

b) This study could be only some of moral values it may give. The

writer hopes that other students of English Diploma may study his

paper more deeply in order to have literary insights.

c) This final assignment task can be also a reference for other people

who want to do a research of moral values in others song lyrics

album and significance that contained in it.

APPENDICES

A mix of polished pop/rock and neo-soul made Maroon 5 one of the most popular bands of the new millennium, with songs like "This Love," "She Will Be Loved," and "Makes Me Wonder" all topping the charts worldwide. Previously, bandmates Adam Levine (vocals/guitar), Jesse Carmichael(keyboards), Mickey Madden (bass), and Ryan Dusick(drums) had spent the latter half of the '90s playing in Kara's Flowers, even releasing a debut album for Reprise Records while still attending high school. The record tanked, however, and Kara's Flowers found themselves dropped from Reprise's roster. After briefly attending college, the bandmates regrouped as Maroon 5, adding former Square guitarist James Valentine to the lineup and embracing a more R&B-influenced sound. Several years later, the quintet had officially risen to the forefront of pop music with Songs About Jane and It Won't Be Soon Before Long, both of which went multi-platinum.

Songs About Jane propelled the band into the mainstream, but the album was not an immediate hit. Octone Records had signed the newly christened Maroon 5 in 2001, and the debut album Jane received a lukewarm response upon its release in June 2002. "Harder to Breathe" became a radio staple 17 months later and was soon followed by the omnipresent "This Love," whose steamy video (featuring

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA frontman Levine and a barely clothed girlfriend) wooed the TV-watching crowds at MTV. Songs About Jane finally entered the Billboard Top Ten in August 2004, more than two years after the album's release, and follow-up singles like "She Will Be Loved" and "Sunday Morning" helped the album move over 2.7 million copies by year's end.

Maroon 5 toured exhaustively in support of Jane's slow-burning success, issuing two stopgap recordings -- 2004's 1.22.03.Acoustic and 2005's Live Friday the 13th -- while traveling the world alongside the likes of the Rolling Stonesand John Mayer. Their schedule was especially trying on percussionist Dusick, who sustained wrist and shoulder injuries and was often unable to play. By fall 2006, Dusick had been officially replaced by Matt Flynn (the former drummer for Gavin DeGraw), and the revised band released its sophomore effort in May 2007. It Won't Be Soon Before Long proved to be less popular than its predecessor (which had sold more than four million copies in the U.S. alone), but it still enjoyed double-platinum certification while spinning off the chart-topping single "Makes Me Wonder." Maroon 5 had cemented their status as pop/rock heavyweights, and they now had the connections to prove it. Released in late 2008, Call and Response: The Remix Album reinterpreted the band's catalog with remixes by influential producers like Mary J. Blige, Mark Ronson, and Pharrell Williams.

Between 2008 and 2010, the band worked with a different producer -- veteran rock/country architect Robert John "Mutt" Lange -- on a third studio album, Hands All Over, which was released in September 2010. Although it was kept from the top of the album charts, it went platinum. Also, the following year, it received a big boost when Levine began appearing as a judge on the NBC reality television talent competition The Voice. That same year, Hands All Over was re-released with the single "Moves Like Jagger," featuring Levine's The Voice co-judge Christina Aguilera; the single promptly hit the top of the charts. In 2012, Carmichael revealed that he was taking time off from performing with Maroon 5 and would be replaced by touring keyboardist PJ Morton.

In April of 2012, the band teased the release of its fourth studio album with "Payphone," a single featuring Wiz Khalifathat hit number two. The resulting album, Overexposed, also reached number two, featuring production from a bevy of name producers including Ryan Tedder, Max Martin, Benny Blanco, and

A second single from the album, the reggae-tinged "One More Night," topped the charts not long after its release in June, and stayed at the top long enough to become the band's most successful showing to date. Two further singles also reached the Top Ten, "Daylight" and "Love Somebody."

During 2013, Levine continued to appear on The Voice, and also made appearances in the television drama American Horror Story, as well as the music- based dramatic film Begin Again. The band also hit the studio to record songs for a fifth studio album, aptly titled V, which saw keyboardist Jesse

Carmichael return to the fold after a brief hiatus. Released in September

2014, V debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and produced several

Top Ten singles including "Maps," "Animals," and "Sugar." Two more singles followed in 2015 with "This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like a Motherf*****" and

"Feelings." Also in 2015, Maroon 5 released their first hits collection, The

Singles. The single "Don't Wanna Know," featuring rapper Kendrick Lamar, appeared in 2016 and peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was later revealed to be the first single from their forthcoming sixth LP. A second collaborative single, "Cold," featuring Future, was released in early 2017, with

"What Lovers Do" appearing before the November release of Red Pill Blues. In

2018 the band issued a remix of Red Pill Blues' "Girls You Like," featuring an appearance by Cardi B.
