The unfair way that our 2 - 3 4 - 7 8 - 11 generation was treated can never be fully rectified. June 22nd 2019 marked the first National Windrush Day, and Lady Floella Benjamin has been tasked with creating a fitting monument to that symbolic event of 1948. British life and culture has been immeasurably enriched by Caribbean immigration. Just imagine Britain without Rhythm and Blues, Reggae, Ska, Calypso, Salsa, Zumba or Music & Talks & Film Theatre Exhibitions Modern Jazz. We would have to bring back “knees up mother Brown”. 13 - 15 16 - 23 24 - 29 “Young, Gifted and Black” is the theme for BHM 2019. As part of that we celebrate the second generation. The children of the Windrush literally carry the flag for Britain. There are too many of them to name, Dame Kelly Holmes, Johnson Beharry VC and Lenny Henry are just three of the innumerable horde of high achievers who have put UEA the “Great” into modern Britain. 30 - 33 I hope you had a good Windrush Day. • Norfolk Through a Lens
NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service 2 NORFOLK THROUGH A LENS A guide to the Photographic Collections held by Norfolk Library & Information Service History and Background The systematic collecting of photographs of Norfolk really began in 1913 when the Norfolk Photographic Survey was formed, although there are many images in the collection which date from shortly after the invention of photography (during the 1840s) and a great deal which are late Victorian. In less than one year over a thousand photographs were deposited in Norwich Library and by the mid- 1990s the collection had expanded to 30,000 prints and a similar number of negatives. The devastating Norwich library fire of 1994 destroyed around 15,000 Norwich prints, some of which were early images. Fortunately, many of the most important images were copied before the fire and those copies have since been purchased and returned to the library holdings. In 1999 a very successful public appeal was launched to replace parts of the lost archive and expand the collection. Today the collection (which was based upon the survey) contains a huge variety of material from amateur and informal work to commercial pictures. This includes newspaper reportage, portraiture, building and landscape surveys, tourism and advertising. There is work by the pioneers of photography in the region; there are collections by talented and dedicated amateurs as well as professional art photographers and early female practitioners such as Olive Edis, Viola Grimes and Edith Flowerdew. More recent images of Norfolk life are now beginning to filter in, such as a village survey of Ashwellthorpe by Richard Tilbrook from 1977, groups of Norwich punks and Norfolk fairs from the 1980s by Paul Harley and re-development images post 1990s.

Exhibitions and associated events 1.1 Olive Edis: Photographer 15th December 2018 – 14th September 2019 The current main exhibition at Ancient House is Olive Edis: Photographer which opened on the 14th December at a ‘Takeover event’ by the children from the museum’s after-school History Club, at which the children gave a short dramatic performance of Olive Edis’s life. This exhibition celebrates the life and work of pioneering British photographer Olive Edis (1876-1955). Although relatively unknown, Edis was one of the most important photographers of the first half of the 20th century and the first-ever accredited female war photographer. The breadth of her subjects from British royalty and aristocracy to the characterful faces of the fisherman of north Norfolk, together with her highly atmospheric photographs of the battlefields of France and Flanders taken during her time as an official World War One war photographer, raise her to international status. The exhibition was created in association with Alistair Murphy, Curator at Cromer Museum. Alistair has previously curated exhibitions at Cromer and Norwich and co-authored the catalogue Fishermen and Kings that is currently on sale in the museum shop.

80 ' EDITOR'S NOTES. with the building. The north and south doorwayswereTransitional Norman, the one having a round and the other a segmental head. A curious carved figure over the south door way provoked some• discussion. It was surrounded by foliagein low relief. There were vestiges of Early English workin the lancet windows of the north side of the nave, and the priests' doorway in the chancel, and the progressivehistory of the church was continued by :the perpendicular tower with its raised letters and devices in stone at the base. Tea was admirably provided .at Thetford Temperance Hotel, and Mr. Clarkeafterwards conductedsome:ofthe party to Thetford Castle Hill. This magnificent-earth-workis surely not sufficientlyknown to East Anglians. Its commanding height, which taken vertically (as Mr. Clarke informed us) is no less than ,81-ft., exceedsthat of Castle Rising by 38-ft., while it is unique in Britain as possessing a double line of ramparts guarding the mound. The ramparts reach a height of 30 to 35-ft., and they have been alternately assigned to the Celts, Romans, Saxons,Danes, and Normans. Mr. Clarke favoured the Norman origin of these earthworks. A varied and instructive excursion was thus brought to a con- clusion, leaving the members of the Institute with much fresh food for intellectual reflection, as well .as gratitude to-the leader for his able conduct of the programme in all its details. H.H. PRINCE FREDERICK DULEEP SINGH'S LECTURE AT IPSWICH. REPAIRING OR RESTORING. (Reprinted from the " East Anglian Daily Times.") , That old buildings should be repaired rather than restored, so called, was the theme of a lecture deliveredon Friday afternocinat the Ipswich Museumby H.H.

BRECKLAND AREA MUSEUMS COMMITTEE Item No. 6 Ancient House, Museum of Thetford Life Report by the Curator, Ancient House This report outlines work at the Ancient House from June to Sept 2011. 1 Opening of latest exhibition: World War Two, Local Secrets and Stories The World War Two exhibition was opened in June by Thetford’s Mayor Derek Mortimer who spoke of his recollections of the town during the war. Head of Museums, Vanessa Trevelyan also spoke about the value of changing displays and community involvement. The museum display includes accounts of the how papers from the War Office were brought to Thetford under armed guard for pulping and recycling into useful articles such as trays or helmets. The display is to run until May next year. The World War Two theme informs some of the public and schools programme for the next 6 months. This exhibition has toured the museums in King’s Lynn and Gressenhall and is an expression of closer working between these western area sites. 2 The Thetford Festival The Museum was much involved in this year’s Thetford Festival again with three events at the Museum and contribution to two of the bigger joint events. Staff were part of both the planning and also delivery of events. With grant aid from the Moving Thetford Forward board, a busy of programme starting at the August Bank Holiday weekend was coordinated bby the Thetford Tourism and Heritage Partnership. The events were well attended and included a talk by our colleague Frank Meeres from the Norfolk Record Office at the Ancient House about the town during the Second World War, and an Archaeology Day at the Limes with a contribution by Stuart Hall Community Outreach Officer for Thetford and King’s Lynn.

33 SUMMER EXCURSION, 1906. GEDDING—COCKFIELD—SHIMPLING THORNE— COLDHAM HALL. The annual excursion of the members of the Suffolk Institute of Archteology took place on the 1st of August, 1906. The start was made from the Angel Hill, Bury St. Edmund's, under most favourable circumstances ; members collected from East and West Suffolk, and were afterwards joined at Gedding Church, the first -halting place, by a party of twelve members from Sudbury, under the guidance of Mr. W. J. Langdon, as well As by several others who arrived in motor cars and in their own • conveyances. Over one hundred members entered the quaint and interesting church, which was carefully described by the Rev. J. Hind, Rector of Gedding, whose father, the Rev. W. M. Hind, LL.D., was, in conjunction with PrOfessor Babington, .author of a well-known work on Suffolk flora (pub. 1889). The principal features of Gedding Church are the various traces of Norman stone- work still to be seen in the windows of the North and South walls ; the low-side window about which arose the usual arguments as to the reason for its construction ; and the recesses in the wall dividing the chancel from the nave, which .bear the appearance of the former existence of aumbries. The main part of the edifice was erected in the 13th or 14th centuries by members of the Chamberlain family, whO awned the adjacent hall at ;that period, and whose arms (Argent fretty, on a chief sable three torteaux ) may be seen portrayed in stone and stained glass both inside and outside the church.

  • Queen Victoria and the Maharaja Duleep Singh: Conflicting Identities in an Imperial Context
Queen Victoria and the Maharaja Duleep Singh: Conflicting Identities in an Imperial Context A. Martin Wainwright* An argument that starts from the sovereign claims of the son of the “Lion of Punjab,” ends, somewhat ridiculously, though not without a touch of pathos, with the sorrows of the Squire of Elveden.1 Thus did an anonymous Times editorial of August 31, 1882, dismiss the Maharaja Duleep Singh’s claim to his family estates by summarizing the metamorphosis of his social and cultural identity. To this day Punjab’s last maharaja remains an enigmatic and problematic figure. Few would dispute that there is a “touch of pathos” to his life, but there remains no agreement on precisely where he fit in the British empire’s social structure. One of the problems with any analysis of Duleep is that he underwent so many metamorphoses. First, in the 1840s he was the young maharaja, who served alternately as the political pawn of the Sikh army, his mother, and the British East India Company. Then, in the 1850s he became the exotic, partially-Westernized Indian prince who stayed frequently as the guest of Queen Victoria while acquiring the habits of an English country gentleman. For the next thirty years, he resided in Britain, entertaining its aristocracy and immersing himself fully in that society. But this life finally broke down in the 1880s amid recrimination against British authorities over the loss of his inheritance. He then resumed his Sikh identity and became a rebel against the British Empire. Finally, in the early 1890s as an ailing man facing death, he sought and received a royal pardon and tried to regain the standing that he had lost with his British friends.
