The formal, two-story club- house is modeled after the private conservatories built in England in the early 1800s. Materials include a combina- tion of delicately detailed exposed structural steel, cast stone, and classic columns and arches—all tied together with a soaring, two-story glass atrium at the heart of the building. Because of the tropical climate, MAI used thermal-resistant glass for the project, allowing light to flood the facility without overheating it. Outside, the Conservatory is anchored to the earth with a cut-stone base, Doric-style columns, and cast-stone balustrades that add to the sense of symmetry, formality, and grace. A series of stone staircases cascade to the pool, gardens, and greens, creating a smooth transition between building and landscape. Inside, the interiors feature a British-island design, with a combination of columns, wainscoting, ceil- ing fans, furniture, and fabrics that hearken to living in the Spice Islands. 30 | RESORT AND RECREATION www.resort-recreation.com R+R_DesignShowcase08.indd 30 11/16/08 5:41:02 PM 7;/57</B7=<53BA@3/: Since 1996, Los Angeles-based Design Group Carl Ross has been recognized as CURRENT PROJECTS INCLUDE: a leading architectural interior design rm, creating 4- and 5-star luxury hotels Hyatt Siesta Key Beach, FL and resorts around the world.
