Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Ana María Shua and Belén Gache Play, Space and Idealized Reader Constructs in Contemporary Argentine Fiction: Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Ana María Shua and Belén Gache Halbert, William University of Liverpool Abstract This thesis explores the convergences and divergences in the personal conceptualizations of play, space and idealized reader constructs as they are manifest in the short fictions of Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortázar, the sudden fictions of Ana María Shua and, more recently, in the hypertext fictions of Belén Gache. The four chapters that make up this thesis offer an in-depth examination of how the narrative strategies employed by each individual author are used in an attempt to imbue the reading process with a game-like quality that serves to reduce the ontological distances between author, text and reader. As such, this thesis not only identifies key developments in the thematic and stylistic concerns of the Argentine short story, but also situates the reader’s position in relation to what I call the ‘narrative space’. This ‘narrative space’ refers to a spatially-inflected manifestation of the cognitive, imaginative and emotional experiences of the ideal reader construct that foregrounds his/her role in the co-production of narrative meaning. This is for you. 4 Introduction The present thesis concerns itself with the concepts of play, space and idealized reader constructs as they are manifest in the works of Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Ana María Shua and Belén Gache. Of specific interest are the ways in which the concepts of play and space - as they come to represent heavily thematized elements of the respective fictions, short fictions, sudden fictions and hypertext fictions of all four artists - actively problematize the literary politics that inform the dynamic relationship between author and reader. This introduction is comprised of six key sections. Its first and second sections outline and justify the thesis’s overall position within the wider context of the study of Latin American Literature. Its third, fourth and fifth sections elucidate upon the key terminology, the methodological frameworks and the theoretical dialogues that guide the work’s avenues of investigation. Its sixth and final section offers a breakdown and overview of each chapter’s structure and also provides a summary of each chapter’s salient arguments. 0.1 Literary Politics - A Heritage of Experimentation This thesis offers a concise examination of how the narrative strategy of play - as it pertains to the landscape of Argentine short fiction - is used to reduce the ontological distances between author, text and reader.1 Serving as a unifying line of enquiry across the works of all four authors is a comparative study of the concern for ludic engagement as it comes to represent a narrative strategy that problematizes the 1 What follows is an elaboration on the thesis’ critical position within, and contribution to, the wider study of Latin American Literature, as well as a justification for the specific avenues of analysis explored throughout this study. 5 ontological distance between author, text and reader.     Último round de Cortázar: el collage-síntesis de un proceso Izara BATRES CUEVAS Universidad Complutense de Madrid [email protected] RESUMEN Desde su llegada a París, Julio Cortázar comienza un proceso literario de interpenetración creativa con la ciudad que hace que el espíritu poético de París quede reflejado en las obras de Cortázar, al mismo tiempo que él escribe París desde una mirada poética. Es también un proceso personal, ya que las fases en que se divide se corresponden con los estadios vitales de Cortázar. Todo ello queda recogido en la síntesis heterogénea del libro almanaque Último round, pero, para comprenderla, antes debemos distinguir las fases en las que se divide el proceso, determinadas por la relación con París y que, como trayectos iniciáticos, llevan al escritor de la teoría poética a su práctica, de la indefinición de su identidad y su ideal humano a la definición de ambos, del terreno estético al ontológico. Y por supuesto debemos comprender el concepto cortazariano de almanaque y la relevancia de la cualidad de collage del libro para reflejar todo este proceso. En la escritura cortazariana, la incesancia se disemina en el espesor de los textos fusionando el proceso de inscripción y su trascendencia como en un pasaje sucesivo y simultáneo, abriendo la deriva del sentido hacia una semiosis sin fin. Estas líneas de lectura que aparecen a cierta mirada crítica como trazos continuos, desde otra perspectiva no se dan a leer como productos terminados sino como una producción en proceso de hacerse, cuya expansión despliega la práctica de una incesancia de la escritura, tramada sobre otros textos, otros códigos, y articulada de esta forma en el armazón de los discursos constitutivos de los saberes acerca de la sociedad, pero no en términos de lógica determinista, sino por la vía de la cita.

La primera, quizá la más persistente, es la aparición de una presencia amenazante y extraña que va cercando a el (los) personaje(s) hasta desplazarlos de su tranquilidad inicial y cotidiana. El ejemplo arquetípico tal vez se halle en "Casa tomada" de Bestiario. Sin embargo, es preciso aclarar que esta modalidad no es privativa de su primer volumen de cuentos sino que aparece intermitentemente a lo largo de todas sus colecciones. La segunda modalidad de lo fantástico en Cortázar está presente en los cuentos de doble trama. El análisis de un corpus significativo de cuentos de Cortázar arroja la conclusión de que algunos de sus exponentes, sin constituir excepciones ni desvirtuar la esencia del género en sus rasgos constitutivos, narran dos historias. Ejemplos de este tipo se hallan en toda la cuentística del autor y en síntesis responden a una estructura similar que, en líneas generales, opera así: en el comienzo aparece una situación que se tiene como cierta, verdadera y otra aludida, figurada. I-Docs are defined by ‘nonlinear’ spatiotemporal organisation as their interactive capacities enable multiple pathways through documentary footage and materials. It is often argued that this nonlinearity is politicized by i-Docs to enable polyvocality and the destabilisation of dominant narratives. I argue that i-Docs deserve Geographical attention for two key reasons. Firstly, if Geographers have long explored articulations and reformulations of space-time through media then i-Docs offer an insight into contemporary constructions of nonlinear spatiotemporal imaginaries through interactive medium. Secondly, nonlinearity and its politics has also become foundational to Geography’s own approaches to space-time, making pertinent the explorations of nonlinearity and its socio-political implications that engagement with i-Docs enables. In this context, I analyse Gaza Sderot to explore its construction of a nonlinear spatiotemporal imaginary and question the political perspectives that imaginary generates for its subject of the Gaza conflict. In concluding, I also suggest that i-Docs could be a valuable methodological tool for Geographers.
