Thanksgiving Morning , November 28 9:00am Festival Eucharist Each year at St. John's we come together on Thanksgiving morning to give thanks to God for all our blessings, known and unknown. In this joyous celebration, we come together as family and friends to celebrate our freedoms given to us by Almighty God and we do this in inspired song, Word and Eucharist. Fr. Skluzacek will be back to concelebrate the Mass and preach the homily.

This year bagpipers, drums, trumpets, piano, organ, choir and congregational singing will lift our spirits in festive praise of the Lord. And as always, a festive parish breakfast follows to delight the taste buds. Plan now to come and give thanks, in God's House of Prayer.

The collection on Thanksgiving goes to support the work of St. Vincent de Paul Society who helps the needy in our community. Thank you for your generosity.

The Parish Campus will CLOSE after hospitality.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” This powerful quote we hear in the Gospel of Luke as we finish up the liturgical year. It is also repeated twice as part of a popular stanza that is sung at funerals or when people are near death. In fact, even though my Grandpa Kasper’s funeral was over 23 years ago, that is one of the things I remember vividly from it. There is something sad about it. There is a goodbye, a farewell, a departure. There is sadness. Yet, in the midst of the sadness, Christ brings hope! He lovingly responds to the criminal, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” The criminal is forgiven. He will not be separated from Christ due to death, rather, he will be reunited with Christ in Paradise! Wow. There is hope. There is life. There is mercy. There is communion. Jesus will be alive in Paradise and so will the criminal! You too have the chance to be with Christ. My grandpa has a chance to be with Christ in heaven and I have great hope he is.

The Catholic Church celebrates this Sunday as “Our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe.” There is a great reverence and majesty in this title and deservingly so. Jesus is the Christ, that is the Anointed One who came to fulfil the prophets. He is Our Lord as he came to rescue and redeem us! He is Lord as he is to be obeyed. He is King as he rules over the world through love and service. He is not a foreign imposing ruler, but a servant king who embraces and loves those in his kingdom. He is King of the Universe as everything that is, comes from God himself.

On this occasion when we reflect on the majesty of Christ, take a moment to reflect on your role. When you cooperate with God’s grace, you play an active role in your salvation. We are called to build up his kingdom here in New Brighton and beyond. We are working to do that by creating a culture where we are reliant on prayer, willing to grow and living out of a generous spirit. In doing so, we allow God to be made manifest and his presence realized. You have an important role that Christ has not just asked or commanded or delegated to you, but rather he works with you to build up his kingdom. This can be through using your gifts to make soci- ety a better place. It can be through sharing Christ’s love through service or reaching out to the poor. You bring Christ with you wherever you go and can make him known. He desires to support you and work with you! As you go about your day, ask Jesus to show himself and to give you the strength you need to do what he asks of you. He is not only King, he is Our King, that is he working with and in and through YOU! The criminal on the cross asked Jesus to remember him, and in doing so he was able to receive and cooperate with God’s grace which won him eternal salvation!

Speaking of departures and returns, our former pastor, Fr. Michael Skluzacek, will be here to concelebrate and preach Mass at 9:00 am on Thanksgiving! Please join us as we celebrate the Eucharist together! Eucharist means thanksgiving and is itself an opportunity to thank God for his many blessings!

As we approach Thanksgiving, know that I am thankful to serve you and with you here at this wonderful par- ish. God is truly doing great things here every day. I continue to be amazed at the healing and power that Christ brings through the Sacraments. When I conclude with my salutation here at the end, know that I truly mean it. I am grateful to share the Father’s love with you!

Winter Scripture 2020 - Two Part Series: Letters from Prison Part I & II - offered only on Wednesdays from 9:30 – 11:00am beginning January 22. Letters from Prison - Incarcerated numerous times "for the defense of the gospel" (Phil 1:16), Paul wrote several letters from the confines of prison. Letters from Prison, Part 1, explores the letters of Philippians and Philemon in four sessions, explaining the reason each letter was written and addressing various themes such as joy, unity in Christ, reconciliation, and the close relationship between Paul and his communi- ties. Letters from Prison, Part 2, provides an in-depth investigation of Paul's letters to the Colossians and Ephesians, two letters with a great deal in common. Besides being written from prison, both letters address Gentile communities learning to live faithful Christian lives. Exploring themes such as God's eternal plan, the unity of the church, and the fullness of life in Christ, these letters offer a sweeping and still relevant vision of faith in Christ and the church as his body. Cost is $30. Registration online only by visiting https://bit.ly/36UvL5j
