Excavation of the areas dedicated to these activities resumed in 2013 at both sites, uncover- ing numerous firing and storage features. -

Il triangolo Comparetti-Halbherr-Pernier offre, nei frequenti scambi epistolari, uno spaccato affascinante e, per molti versi, estremamente attuale della rete di interessi politici e scientifici che avevano mosso, già all’indomani della scoperta di Gortina, l’appassionato roveretano a cercare una sede greca per le sue missioni archeologiche. Da Firenze Domenico Comparetti crea i presupposti politici e individua vari ambiti della ricer - ca scientifica, mentre a Halbherr il giovane Luigi Pernier 5 appare come una figura che possa unire la concretezza dell’attività sul campo ad un’indole diplomatica. “Luigi Pernier (…) si distingue per una speciale vocazione per questi studii di storia e di anti - chità” 6 Pernier era stato selezionato nel 1897 come allievo della Scuola Archeologica di Roma da una severa commissione composta da D. Comparetti, R. Lanciani, F. Halbherr, E. Loewy ed E. De Ruggiero. Il giudizio unanime di idoneità aveva confermato l’ottima prova che qualche mese prima Pernier aveva sostenuto discutendo la tesi di laurea di fronte, tra gli altri, a Giulio Beloch e con Lanciani come relatore. -

The Ancient Egyptian Books of the Earth Wilbour Studies in Egypt and Ancient Western Asia
THE ANCIEN THE Collections of scenes and texts designated variously as the “Book of the Earth,” “Creation of the Solar Disc,” and “Book of Aker” were inscribed on the walls of royal sarcophagus chambers throughout Egypt’s Ramesside period (Dynasties 19–20). This material illustrated discrete episodes from the The Ancient Egyptian nocturnal voyage of the sun god, which functioned as a model for the resurrection of the deceased T king. These earliest “Books of the Earth” employed mostly ad hoc arrangements of scenes, united E by shared elements of iconography, an overarching, bipartite symmetry of composition, and their GYP Books of the Earth frequent pairing with representations of the double sky overhead. From the Twenty-First Dynasty and later, selections of programmatic tableaux were adapted for use in private mortuary contexts, T I often in conjunction with innovative or previously unattested annotations. Typological Studies of Ancient Theatre Architecture: The Tree vs. the Rhizome Model Zeynep Aktüre This paper aims to draw attention to a comparatively recent paradigm shift in studies on ancient theatre architecture that has resulted in a transformation of the rather familiar theatre typology based on Greek-Roman binarism to one which stresses a multiplicity in the ancient performance building types that escapes a representation of the binary model; and explains this change by a parallel shift of emphasis from the idea of commonness to that of plurality in the conceptualisation of European cultural identity. Such contextualisation of the modern historiography on ancient theatre architecture in contemporary Europe, where we find the origins of archaeology as a discipline, would conform to the idea that ‘archaeological interpretation is necessarily a subjective process which is influenced by the socio-political context in which it takes place’ (Jones and Graves-Brown 1996: 19). -

Hence, they should be preserved from the different factors that might cause harm for their wall paintings. One of these factors is the excessive relative humidity as it increases the bacteria and fungus activity inside the tomb in addition to its effect on the mechanical and physical properties of materials. This chapter describes the Research work to design ventilation systems to some of these important tombs. The chapter aims to investigate, design, and implement controlled climate to the tombs of the valley of kings with complete monitoring of air properties, temperature, relative humidity and carbon oxides and air quality parameters mechanical distributions inside selected tombs of the valley of the kings that are open for visitors. A complete climate control and monitoring of air will be effected with the aid of a mechanical ventilation system extracting air at designated locations in the wooden raised floor of the tombs. -

On the Flow of Deities Between Egypt and Its Neighboring Countries Joachim Friedrich Quack 1 Introductory Remarks Since the main title of my contribution sounds more economical than ecumenical, I should start with a question: What does it mean to deal in gods? There is one very remarkable passage in an Egyptian text which laments that gods are sold for oxen (Admonitions 8, 12). This phrase seems strange at first sight, so strange that almost all modem editors and commentators have deemed it corrupt and have proposed emendations.1 Actually, it makes perfect sense once you realize that “gods” here means “statues of gods.” These were, in the Egyptian culture, often made of gold, and constituted enough buying power to actually acquire an ox in exchange. The key point for my subsequent analysis is that “gods” have a strongly material ized existence. A god is not simply a transcendent or omnipresent entity but has a focal point in a material object.2 Also, in order to hear the prayers of humans, special proximity is an advantage. Being far from a god in a physical sense was thus seen as a very real menace, and one can see how Egyptians on missions abroad liked to take a transportable figure of their deity with them.3 This also had implications for the opportunities to expand: a figure of the deity at the new cult place was essential and the easiest way to find one would be if you had one that you were free to take with you; this was the case, for instance, with the 1 Most recently Enmarch (2008, 145).
