She is the author of Renovation Nation: Our Obsession with Home (2008). Merja Bauters is responsible for courses such as semiotic methodology, semiotics and technology, and cultural artefacts in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Helsinki. She also teaches visual design, communication and user experience at the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. She has previously been a researcher in the European Union project Knowledge Practices Laboratory (see www.knowledgepractices.info). Bauters’ doctoral thesis utilised a holistic approach to the semiosic process in analysing beer labels (for further publications see metropolia.academia.edu/MerjaBauters). Claudia Bell is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Auckland. She has published extensively on vernacular culture and local and national identity in New Zealand. Specific topics include roadside attractions, small-town promotion, festivals, farmers’ markets, artists, landscape, World Expo pavilions and pie carts. Two of her books have been national bestsellers; a third was finalist in the New Zealand Book Awards. She also lectures and publishes on international tourism. Andy Bennett is Professor of Cultural Sociology and Director of the Griffith Centre for Cultural Research at Griffith University in Queensland. He has authored and edited numerous books including Popular Music and Youth Culture (2000), Cultures of Popular Music (2001), Researching Youth (2003), and After Subculture (2004). He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Sociology; a Faculty Fellow of the Center for Cultural Sociology, Yale University; an Associate Member of PopuLUs, the Centre for the Study of the World’s Popular Musics, Leeds University; and a member of the Advisory Board for the Social Aesthetics Research Unit, Monash University. Eli Boulton is a researcher in the Department of Sociology at the University of Auckland. His interests include political economy, technology, popular culture, language and representation, and social and literary theory. Bruce Cohen is a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Auckland, and teaches courses on cultural studies, subcultures, crime and deviance, and the sociology of mental health. He has previously published xi articles on cultural studies and popular culture in the journals Youth And Society, Altitude, and the International Journal of Drug Policy, as well as chapters in Jugend, Partizipation und Migration: Orientierungen im Kontext von Integration und Ausgrenzung (2007), Sonic Synergies: Music, Identity, Technology and Community (2008), and Global Islamophobia: Muslims and Moral Panic in the West (2011). Following publication of his first monograph, Mental Health User Narratives: New Perspectives on Illness and Recovery (2008), he is now writing a critical text on medicine, psychiatry and the construction of mental illness. Adam Craigie is a postgraduate sociology student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Auckland. He has research interests in youth, the media, education and deviance. Colin Cremin teaches social theory and visual culture in the Department of Sociology at the University of Auckland. He has written in the areas of cultural sociology, critical management studies, postmodern theory, ideology and subjectivity. Libby is on the verge of becoming a woman and her mother, writer Genevieve Smart, has just been reported a missing person. There are no clues to her mother’s disappearance; all that is left behind is a completed, but unpublished, manuscript which appears to be a family history. The Ocean Road is a contemporary literary novel which tells the story of the Smart family, a ragtag bunch of smokers and drinkers who fight too much and spend too much time together. Their story runs alongside a parallel story, the unpublished manuscript, which is set in Adelaide and Melbourne in 1938, 1972 and 1986 and which outlines the struggles and stories of people who, it might be said, are aspiring to the level of working class enjoyed by the Smart family. The story set in 1938 describes an Aboriginal couple, Jack and Margery, and what they do to try to survive.

Conceptual Differences Across Disciplines: Needs & Approaches The practice of documentation of performances such as music, theater, and dance and performance art is an integral part of the cultural record. As such, it is subject to change and evolution over time, as well as the vagaries of natural catastrophe, social disorder, or any of the myriad disrupters of human history. The application of the practice of documentation varies according to the discipline utilizing it; indeed, even its efficacy varies from culture to culture and from discipline to discipline. Couple this with our movement deeper and deeper into the use of digital technology for the manifestation of culture and we must grapple with new solutions for capturing and conveying the essentials of these acts of expression. The emergence of performance and installation art in the 20th century gave rise to a field of critical theory somewhat at odds with other approaches of documentation, couched as it was in the visual arts. While aspects of theater and dance have influenced this critical theory, the performance practice considerations of music have not played as much a role in defining it. Indeed, considerable discussion has been generated, over understanding just what comprises “documentation”, whether photography is ‘documentary’ or ‘theatrical’, or if it is a ‘conceptual medium for documentation’ (Taylor, 2009). This reflects a concern for the “visual” aspect of “performance” art as opposed to the temporal aspects so inherent in both music and dance.

    Cultural Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution Introduction In his poem, The Second Coming (1919), William Butler Yeats captured the moment we are now experiencing: Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. As we see the deterioration of the institutions created and fostered after the Second World War to create a climate in which peace and prosperity could flourish in Europe and beyond, it is important to understand the role played by diplomacy in securing the stability and strengthening the shared values of freedom and democracy that have marked this era for the nations of the world. It is most instructive to read the Inaugural Address of President John F. Kennedy, in which he encouraged Americans not only to do good things for their own country, but to do good things in the world. The creation of the Peace Corps is an example of the kind of spirit that put young American volunteers into some of the poorest nations in an effort to improve the standard of living for people around the globe. We knew we were leaders; we knew that we had many political and economic and social advantages. There was an impetus to share this wealth. Generosity, not greed, was the motivation of that generation. Of course, this did not begin with Kennedy. It was preceded by the Marshall Plan, one of the only times in history that the conqueror decided to rebuild the country of the vanquished foe.
