Things like ‘Oh yeah you’re coming next week aren’t you’ or ‘sorry we are doing major renovations next week’.

However, the biggest fear is when the news starts off with Tropical Cyclone Ann due to make landfall this week in north Queensland. First cyclone post April since 1989. We have many guests who have been planning to come out to dive the reef prior to the tour so I am hoping the cyclone isn’t too strong. Current view is that it will be downgraded to a tropical low when it hits land and it is now tracking well north of Cooktown. Still does make me a bit nervous.

We have lots of foreign visitors seeing Australia for the first time and I hope we can do the country justice. There are also a dozen Aussies coming most of whom have never been into the northern tropics so it will be interesting for them as well.

Living in a cyclone or hurricane zone is hard enough with the constant worry during the season. In modern times it isn’t as bad because the forward warning systems are excellent. Clive’s Comments continued… and predicting the track which makes it less stressful for those not in the path. Also, modern building materials, design and practices are far advanced in dealing with extra strong winds and heavy rains. Running a nursery must be a real worry. In the preparation for the trip we visited a number of nurseries between Cairns and Rockhampton who had endured one or several cyclones. Each time they had to pick up, clean up and replace stock. They lose sales for the days before and after the event and will often have staffing problems. Some of our guests come from similar regions in southern USA but they also have severe winter cold so need poly houses in winter. One visitor has 450 poly tunnels that are about 50m long. Each year he has to remove and refit the covers so when we think we have it hard we need to realise growing plants in south eastern Australia is not so hard. Having to do these comments before we leave means we still haven’t had the election. Not sure if I will be able to watch the count so will wake up on Sunday with a new government or more of the same. I am worried about the IR implications of an ALP government but there is nothing I can do about it. As small business we just have to deal with what the electorate gives us and hope that extra costs can be passed on. We will just keep trading until we retire, sell or pass on to the kids. It will be interesting to see what the visitors think of our election process. They all come from regions where voting is voluntary and in many cases some will have never voted. Also, some come from Southern Africa where fair democracy is a privilege that only goes back a few decades. Having lived through several UK and USA elections we are a lot more restrained. There is lots to compare and discuss. The cold weather is here which normally translates to a large drop in people visiting nurseries – at least until, bare root season. With the surge in indoor plants there is optimism that the garden centres will stay busy during this quiet period. It is also encouraging a new generation of gardeners who are actually quite knowledgeable. Google and YouTube tells all about plants and planting. Maybe we are in for a mild and busy winter.
