The county celebrated its 175th year of existence, and the Polk County Historical Museum hosted festivities Tuesday. The birthday cel- ebration took six weeks to plan, according to museum curator Betsy Deiterman. “We had to be sure of the date, research the found- ing of the county and how the division was made, the legislature, then go through the archives and pick inter- esting pictures,” she said. “This was a come-and-go acknowledgement of the birthday for Polk County. We gave away a limited supply of gift bags. Patrons saw lots of photographs from many decades. The oldest photographs are framed and the oldest was in the 1880s.” A pair of photo exhibits are on display at the mu- seum until April 10. WOMEN’S HISTORY Courtesy photos In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office honored an officer from its past and a local high school graduate in Livingston. Sergeant Della Holcomb was a pioneer at the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office. She was the first African-American woman to grad- uate from the Gus George Law Enforcement Academy in 1986. Holcomb, a graduate of Dunbar High School in Liv- ingston, is also believed to be the first African-American woman to reach the rank of sergeant. It was a promotion given by then-Sheriff Milton Wright. Sergeant Holcomb worked at the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office from 1982 as a correctional officer, retiring in 2000 as sergeant.
