I responded quite honestly: “High School Nettie wouldn’t have been surprised. She knew where we were heading.” She absolutely did. I have always been pretty sure I would end up with an advanced degree and I have always known what that would involve. The only question was one of how I was going to get here, but my favorite thing has always been watching television and movies. Once I learned that a job existed where I could watch television and, more or less, get paid for it, I threw myself wholeheartedly into pursuing that job. I get to watch television and talk to other people about it. That’s simply heaven for me. A lot of people helped me get here.

Sargent, Dick (1930-1994) by Linda Rapp Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2004, glbtq, inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Actor Dick Sargent is most widely remembered as "the second Darrin" on the situation comedy Bewitched. He remained closeted for most of his career, but came out in 1991 and embraced gay activism as a "new mission in life." Sargent was born Richard Cox in Carmel, California on April 19, 1930. His mother, Ruth McNaughton Cox, had been an actress in silent films. His father, Colonel Elmer Cox, had served with distinction in World War I. Sargent's relationship with his father was difficult. "I wanted him to love me, and I'm quite sure that he didn't," he commented in 1991. Cox died of a stroke when Sargent was eleven, and afterward the boy was sent off to military school. He was so unhappy that he went on a crash diet to get himself expelled for poor health. Once back home he graduated from high school and entered Stanford University, where he studied acting and appeared in a number of student productions. During those years he came to realize that he was gay, which filled him with anxiety and led him to "a couple of good college tries at suicide." Sargent left Stanford to pursue a career as an actor. He did odd jobs to sustain himself while working on stage and eventually finding minor screen parts. After appearances in several forgettable films, Sargent won roles--albeit still small ones--in more successful productions, including The Great Impostor (directed by Richard Mulligan, 1960) and That Touch of Mink (directed by Delbert Mink, 1962).

  • 'The Wizard of Oz' to 'Wicked': Trajectory of American Myth
FROM 'THE WIZARD OF OZ' TO 'WICKED': TRAJECTORY OF AMERICAN MYTH Alissa Burger A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2009 Committee: Ellen Berry, Advisor Gene S. Trantham Graduate Faculty Representative Don McQuarie Piya Pal Lapinski © 2009 Alissa Burger All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor The Wizard of Oz story has been omnipresent in American popular culture since the first publication of L. Frank Baum’s children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the dawn of the twentieth century. Ever since, filmmakers, authors, and theatre producers have continued to return to Oz over and over again. However, while literally hundreds of adaptations of the Wizard of Oz story abound, a handful of transformations are particularly significant in exploring discourses of American myth and culture: L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900); MGM’s classic film The Wizard of Oz (1939); Sidney Lumet’s film The Wiz (1978); Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995); and Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s Broadway musical Wicked (2003). This project critiques theories of fixed or prescriptive American myth, instead developing a theory of American myth as active, performative and even, at times, participatory, achieved through discussion of the fluidity of text and performance, built on Diana Taylor’s theory of the archive and the repertoire. By approaching text and performance as fluid rather than fixed, this dissertation facilitates an interdisciplinary consideration of these works, bringing children’s literature, film, popular fiction, theatre, and music together in a theoretically multifaceted approach to the Wizard of Oz narrative, its many transformations, and its lasting significance within American culture.

  • American Television, Situation Comedies by Nathan G
American Television, Situation Comedies by Nathan G. Tipton Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Even though the presence of gay and lesbian characters in dramatic television shows has fluctuated with each television season, American situation comedies (known more popularly as sitcoms) have consistently featured a wide array of queer characters in both "guest" appearances and as recurring ensemble members. Indeed, comedy seems particularly suited for queer portrayals such as those seen in hit television series ranging from late-1970s soap opera spoof Soap to the mid-1990s lesbian phenomenon Ellen to the offbeat, "new nuclear" family dynamic of Modern Family. Gay men and lesbians have also been prominently featured (or their presence keenly felt) in series including the queerly inflected sitcom Frasier, the openly queer Will and Grace, and the sprightly musical Glee. Although historically television sitcoms have shared with their dramatic television counterparts "stock" stereotypical characterizations of queer characters--alternately as wispy and effeminate or gossipy and ruthlessly backstabbing men or flannel-shirt-wearing, humorless women--these representations are by no means uniform. These stereotyped roles have, in fact, undergone a positive shift concurrent with both a change in social attitudes and a rise in openly queer television comedy writers and sitcom stars. Hiding in Plain Sight: The 1960s Although most television sitcoms in the 1960s revolved around the well-established nuclear family motif, a discernible gay sensibility began making its presence known, however subtly, on the small screen. At a time when depictions of openly gay characters on television were unheard of, many identifiably queer characters nevertheless did appear in varying guises.
