Beale BAKER EXEGETICAL COMMENTARY ON THE NEW TESTAMENT Robert W. Yarbrough and Joshua W. Jipp, series editors “As we have come to expect from Beale’s notable scholarship, this commentary on Colossians and Philemon models how thorough research, keen attention to Old Testament allusions, and meticulous study of the Greek text provide a basis for incisive, theologically grounded preaching and teaching. It should take its place on the shelf of defi nitive commen- taries on the New Testament that truly help in these tasks.”—David E. Garland, Truett Theological Seminary, Baylor University “Beale’s commentary is everything we have come to expect from a veteran New Testament scholar. His exegesis is detailed and rich in insight and theologically profound, and his emphasis on the fulfi llment of the temple in Colossians is illuminating. Old Testament allusions are mined, helping readers to see how Colossians and Philemon fi t within the entire biblical witness. For pastors, students, and professors, Beale’s work on these two letters will prove invaluable in their own research and study.”—Thomas R. Schreiner, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary “Beale is a fi rst-rate New Testament scholar with proven expertise in the use of the OT in the NT and Biblical Theology. Hence, not surpris- ingly, this fresh and readable commentary on Colossians and Philemon is marked not only by impressive erudition and judicious judgment on complex issues but also by extraordinary theological depth. It breaks new ground, especially in the area of the biblical and Jewish roots of G. K. Beale (PhD, University of Cambridge) is Paul’s teaching in Colossians. Drawing from Matthew 13:52, Schreiner understands the author of the Gospel as a “discipled scribe” who brings out treasures new and old from his teacher. Jesus, as a teacher of wisdom, formed an alternative scribal school. One of the main ways Jesus instructed his students in the paths of wisdom was to reveal the relationship between the new and the old with himself at the center. Schreiner argues that Matthew obeyed the Great Commission by acting as scribe to Jesus in order to share Jesus’s life and work with the world, thereby making disciples of future generations. The First Gospel presents Jesus’s life as the fulfi llment of the Old Testament story of Israel and shows how Jesus brings new life in the New Testament. This book will appeal to professors, students, and scholars of the New Testament as well as pastors. Gorman Renowned scholar Michael Gorman examines the important Pauline theme of participation in Christ, a topic of great interest in New Testa- ment circles and one that is central to Paul’s theology and spirituality. Building on his previous work on the topic, Gorman carefully examines participation in Christ in Paul’s letters. His book explores this theme across the letters and includes in-depth studies of key texts such as Galatians 2, 2 Corinthians 5, and Philippians 2. Gorman also explores the contemporary signifi cance of participating in Christ for Christian life and ministry, arguing that it has wide implications for the life of the believer. Throughout the book, Gorman insightfully unpacks the many theological, spiritual, and pastoral dimensions of participation in Christ and shows its close connection to such related themes as cruciformity, resurrection, justifi cation, theosis, mission, and apocalyptic. One of the themes Gorman explores in particular is what he now calls “resurrectional cruciformity”—that participating in Christ is simultaneously dying and rising with him and that cross-shaped living, infused with the life of the resurrected Lord, is life-giving. New Testament scholars, professors, and students will value this work. Michael J. Gorman (PhD, Princeton Theological Seminary) is the Raymond E. Brown Professor of Biblical Studies and Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary I and University in Baltimore. He formerly served as dean of the Ecumenical Institute of Theology at JULY 2019 St. Mary’s. In the 1990’s in America, it was popular among young people to wear bracelets inscribed with the letters WWJD—What would Jesus do?, a reminder to frame their questions and determine their actions in reference to their faith in Christ; to look at the circumstances and events of their lives in light of the biblical story; to consciously bring their faith to decisions about everyday life. I do not know how well these young people were equipped to do the work of theological reflection. The question that often came to my mind was “How do you know what Jesus would do?” But regardless of their skill level, the important fact was that at least some of them desired to consider the mundane acts of life in light of the gospel. They had appropriated for themselves the task of doing theology. Doing theology is the work of Church.
