Classification and Evaluation of Forest Sites on the Western Highland Rim and Pennyroyal Glendon w~ Smalley u"s.. Department m Agricultul'-e Forest Service Gen~al Technical Report SO- 30 SUMMARY This paper presents a comprehensive forest site classification system for the Western Highland Rim and Western Pennyroyal-Limestone area in northern Alabama, central Tennessee, and western Kentucky. The system is based on physiography, geology, soils, topography, and vegetation. Forty- nine landtypes are described, and each landtype is evaluated in terms of productivity and desirability of selected pines and hardwoods for timber production. Also, each landtype is rated for five soil-related problems that can affect forest management. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am indebted to my colleagues, past and present, for their scientific input, reviews, and stimulating discussions. I am also grateful to the soil scientists, silviculturists, and practicing foresters who have reviewed this guide. • Duck River Watershed Plan FINAL WATERSHED ASSESSMENT
Duck River Watershed Plan FINAL WATERSHED ASSESSMENT U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville District May 2018 Executive Summary This Watershed Plan is a Final Watershed Assessment (FWA) of the Duck River watershed, located in south-central Tennessee. This assessment was prepared under the authority of Section 729 of the Water Resource Development Act of 1986, as amended, which authorizes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to undertake watershed planning. This Watershed Plan identifies existing conditions within the watershed, details the major water resources problems and opportunities in the watershed, and provides specific recommendations for implementation. This study was undertaken with collaboration and input from four non-federal sponsors: The Duck River Development Agency (DRWA), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), and the Buffalo/Duck Resource Conservation and Development Council. The Duck River is considered one of the most biologically diverse rivers in North America and is an outstanding national resource. It has an almost unsurpassed variety of freshwater animal life and is one of three most diverse streams for fish and mussel diversity in the world. The Duck River basin provides habitat for 35 species listed as federally endangered, threatened, candidate or species of concern. The developed landscape ranges from small cities and towns to sparsely populated rural areas with the upper part of the watershed experiencing rapid urbanization and population growth. More than 250,000 middle Tennessee residents rely on the Duck River as their sole source of water. The watershed’s ecosystem is under stress from rapid urban development, land use changes, incompatible agricultural practices, wastewater management and water supply practices, and resource extraction activities.

  • Conserving the Duck River
Conserving the Duck River: A plan for collaborative action November 2005 Preface and Acknowledgements The Nature Conservancy (TNC) led this conservation planning effort for the Duck River watershed, carried out during calendar year 2005, and the primary author of this conservation plan is Sally Rollins Palmer. This work was supported by a National Fish and Wildlife Federation grant awarded to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency on behalf of the Southeast Aquatic Resource Partnership (SARP). The SARP chose the Duck River as one of four pilot watersheds in the Southeastern U.S. (the Duck, the Altamaha in GA, the Roanoke in NC & VA, and the Pascagoula in MS) to test the development of a Southeastern Aquatic Habitat Plan. Many other individuals contributed their expertise to this plan, representing several agencies and organizations, including the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The Buffalo/Duck River Resource Conservation and Development Council coordinator was also interviewed, and components of the RC& D’s strategic plan incorporated into this planning effort. The following individuals attended planning meetings and contributed to the development of this plan in several ways: Gray Anderson – TWRA, Jeff Bowie – NRCS, Geoff Call – USFWS, Leslie Colley – TNC, Frank Fiss - TWRA Paul Freeman – TNC, Don Hubbs – TWRA, Richard Kirk – TWRA, Larry Lofton – Buffalo/Duck RC&D, Doug Murphy – TVA, Odell Poyner - NRCS, Jeff Prestwich – TWRA, Greg Taylor – NRCS, Greg Wathen – TWRA, and Joey Wisby – TNC. Use of Dead Mussel Shells by Madtom Catfishes in the Green River Abstract The Green River in Kentucky has high fish and macroinvertebrate diversity. As both fish and macroinvertebrates have evolved together in this system, relationships have developed between species. One type of relationship that has been observed is between madtom catfishes (Noturus spp.) and mussels in the Green River, where madtoms use dead mussel shells as cover when not actively foraging. In the fall of 2016 and 2017, surveys were conducted to determine if madtom catfishes use dead mussel shells more than rocks of similar size.
