YCI GRC 17 Final ING 2 ! JOYOUS CELEBRATION CONCLUDES THE GIRAGLIA ROLEX CUP ROLEX PRESS ROOM Media, click here to view, select and download copyright-free high resolution images. Genoa, June 17th, 2017 The Sinal prize giving ceremony at the 2017 Giraglia Rolex Cup, organised by the Yacht Club Italiano in collaboration the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez and sponsored by Rolex, saw the Maxi 72 Momo win line honours, the J109 Chestress win the prize for best placed boat across all three events that ccomprised the GRC and the TP52 Freccia Rossa win the Rolex Challenge Trophy for best placed yacht overall in IRC Class. The joyous, bi-lingual ceremony reSlected the roots of this top yachting event, born as a post war collaboration between Italy and France. Gian Riccardo Marini of Rolex lauded the unique atmosphere of friendly competition that reigns at the Giraglia Rolex Cup and thanked the Yacht Club Italiano and the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez for the key roles they play in organising this event. Special thanks also went to BMW for all the help and support they have offered. Vadim Yakimenk owner of the TP52 Freccia Rossa that won the Rolex Challenge Trophy and the Marco Paleari Special Prize spoke on the event. “I think that there are Sive must-do sailing events per year and the Giraglia Rolex Cup is always one of them. It’s becoming famous in Russia and it’s a dream to participate in it: there are always lots of boats, crews from all over the world. It’s full of positive emotion and also challenging. When we saw the weather forecast we chose to sail the shortest possible course and that was the strategy that got us the result. We did a great job and I’m proud of the whole crew. We were a mixed pro and amateur crew, lots of My Russian friends and a few French pros for a total of 13 aboard. The Yacht Club Italiano’s preparation on the water was excellent as was the Rolex social program. As lots of the friends I sail with are businessmen and share My competitive spirit, it takes a sporting event like this one to give us the goal to get together and have some fun. Because in the end, more than the prizes it’s about enjoying the beautiful feeling of being in a sphere made of just air, water and man.” World-class sailor Mauro Pelaschier sailed his umpteenth Giraglia Rolex Cup aboard Namib, a 12m Bermuda sloop purpose-built in 1966 for the Giraglia that was also honoured with the Yacht Club de France award for the yacht that best tells an inspiring story of the sea: “The original owner built this boat because he wanted a small, fast yacht for racing in the Giraglia Rolex Cup. After the Sirst race he realised that all he had built was a small boat so he sold it in disgust. Here we are 50 years later, for us it has been a pleasure to sail aboard this beautifully restored jewel. Every Giraglia Rolex Cup that I have done except one has been long and slow and you always have to be careful of wind holes near the Giraglia rock and coming into Genoa. This year I’d say was exceptionally slow, but here we are, we Sinished. Don’t ask me how long it took us though,” he adds with a chuckle. ABOUT THE GIRAGLIA ROLEX CUP The Giraglia Rolex Cup was created in 1953 as a 241nm offshore challenge. 2017 marks the 65th edition of this 241nm Mediterranean classic that has grown to include feeder races from Sanremo and Marseille, inshore races in the Bay of Saint-Tropez and the famous offshore race from St Tropez to Genoa. The GRC is organised by the Yacht Club Italiano and the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, with support from the Yacht Club Sanremo, the Yacht Club de France, and the Cercle Nautique et Touristique du Lacydon. The Giraglia Rolex Cup has been partnered by Rolex since 1998. ABOUT YACHT CLUB ITALIANO Founded in Genoa in 1879, the Yacht Club Italiano is the oldest yacht club in the Med. With its main clubhouse in Porticciolo Duca degli Abruzzi in Genoa, YCI has always had the primary objectives of spreading yachting culture and organising regattas.     Everything is in place for the 2017 Rolex Giraglia Cup The Giraglia Rolex Cup, which celebrates its 65th edition in 2017, will soon get underway. The event, sponsored by Rolex and organised by the Yacht Club Italiano and the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez with support from the Yacht Club de France, the Yacht Club Sanremo and the Cercle Nautique et Touristique du Lacydon will be held from June 9th to 17th. The Giraglia Rolex Cup will begin with races from Sanremo and Marseille to Saint-Tropez on June 9th, followed by three days of inshore competition in the bay of Saint-Tropez from June 11th to 13th. This before embarking on the famous 243nm race from Saint-Tropez to Genoa via the Giraglia rock, Corsica. Boats participating in the Giraglia, the Med’s most famous bluewater race, will leave Saint-Tropez on June 14th and arrive in Genoa at the Yacht Club Italiano’s clubhouse in Porticciolo Duca degli Abruzzi. The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 17th. The Giraglia Rolex Cup is truly a classic event. As legend has it, the race was created on an evening in December 1952 when Beppe Croce, President of Yacht Club Italiano, René Levainville, President of Yacht Club de France, and Franco Gavagnin were enjoying a long dinner in a Parisian bistro. They envisioned the race from Saint-Tropez to Genoa as a challenge between yachts that could also be seen as a challenge between Italy and France that would favour relations after the Second World War. For the first edition of the Giraglia Cup in 1953 there were twenty-two boats at the start.

It was a spectacular start with the line a few hundred metres from the breakwater of the old port of Sanremo and an offset mark about 1 ½ miles to the east; from there the yachts hoisted their big asymmetrical spinnakers and quickly disappeared towards the first mark in Cala del Forte. This was the last mark in the Italian part of the race, with the second mark of this unprecedented Rolex Giraglia at Chretienne off the Rade d’Agay, about 15 miles from the Gulf of Saint-Tropez with a committee boat of the Société Nautique de Saint Tropez waiting to record the roundings of all the yachts.     YEAR BOOK 2016 Message from the President It’s only a couple of months ago since Claus-Peter Offen left his post after a long lasting and successful presidency. He made this position into one of his top priorities in life and our organization benefited accordingly. Claus-Peter also was responsible in convincing Andrew McIrvine to take over as Secretary General. It was vital to find a very ex- perienced, widely accepted and charismatic personality to guide our organization into the coming years. Personally I would like to thank Claus-Peter for leaving his house in such good order. The organization is well-financed, Rolex are continuing their support and Andrew can further count on our very capable team. Generally speaking your newly elected president will follow up this past success- ful route but also try to strengthen further our ties with the Supermaxi Category. We would like to see more supermaxis attending our regattas, especially the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in September. I would like to thank the Members for their support - and wish to see as many of them as possible on the water during the 2016 season. We have seen signs of recovery from the world financial crisis and owners more willing to come out racing again.
