PILGRIMAGE TO WITH MAGNIFICAT October 19 - 31, 2019 $4,799 From New York Departure From Other US Cities Available www.pilgrimages.com/magnificat France, called “the eldest daughter of the Church” by Saint Pope John Paul II during his first pil- grimage there in 1980, has a long heritage in the Catholic Faith. Throughout its history, France has been blessed by the lives of numerous saints such as Saint Denis, first bishop of Paris; Saint Mary Magdalene, who, fleeing the Holy Land, landed in the South of France; Saint Vincent de Paul; Saint Therese of Lisieux, Doctor of the Church; and even a king, Saint Louis IX. Here you will be moved by their testimonies and teachings. The Church has recognized more than 10 apparitions in France of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Saint Ann. For the past 25 years, France has experi- enced a profound and strong renewal of the Catholic Faith through the birth of new religious com- munities, the expansion of several youth prayer groups in all major cities, the enthusiastic commit- ment of many Catholic leaders in media and politics, the development of new seminaries, and the engagement of priests and bishops in the new evangelization. Through this itinerary, you will per- sonally witness this revival and explore places where this grace continues to blossom. Be inspired by this extraordinarily touching pilgrimage designed by MAGNIFICAT especially for its readers. SAMPLE DAY BY DAY ITINERARY Day 1: DEPARTURE Today you will depart on your overnight flight from your airport. Meals will be served onboard.

Day 3: SAINT-MAXIMIN-LA-SAINTE-BAUME / CASSIS / / / SAINT-MAXIMIN-LA-SAINTE-BAUME Breakfast at the hotel. -> MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Morning Transfer to Cassis (42 miles). Visit and marvel at the natural beauty of creation during this stop to view the calanques of Cassis near Marseille. Extending over 12.5 miles along the Med- iterranean Coast, this rugged landscape, formed by a deep valley cut by a river then flooded by the sea, is known for its staggering beauty. Within the enchanting surroundings of Cassis, enjoy a glass of wine by the port, discover the coastline by boat, or walk the path that winds through Cassis. Transfer to Cotignac (62 miles). Possible lunch with the community. Between Cannes and Marseille, visit Notre-Dame de Graces in Cotignac. A typical village of the Provence region, Cotignac is known for having been the site of apparitions of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus as well as by that of Saint Joseph. These apparitions make this small village the only one in the world where the entire Holy Family has appeared! Pilgrims today can visit the sanctuary and speak to and pray with the community of Saint Jean, a dynamic renewal community of apostolic brothers and sisters. Meeting with a brother of the Saint Jean community. The sanctuary was built after the apparition of the Virgin on August 10, 1519. As he had done each day, Jean de la Baume, a shepherd in the region, began his day with prayer. One day the Virgin told him to build a church at this precise spot so that pilgrims might come in procession to receive the grace and gifts that she wanted to grant them. France became the recipient of such graces in the 17th century. After years of infertility, the royal couple, Anne of and Louis XIII, went on pilgrimage to Cotignac, and Louis XIV was born soon afterwards. To give thanks and praise, King Louis XIII consecrated France to the Virgin Mary. A young King Louis XIV visited in 1660 to thank the Virgin Mary for the gift of his life.

Transfer to Le Thoronet (12 miles). Midway between Marseille and Nice, visit the very beautiful Abbey of Thoronet, nestled in the green hills of the back country of Provence. Its very simplistic architecture and light make it one of the most remarkable examples of Cistercian architecture in France. As a result, the site is listed as a national historical monument. No monks have lived in the abbey since 1971. Today, the abbey has a new spiritual dimension thanks to Bishop Rey, bishop of Fréjus-. Under his di- rection, a Gregorian chant Mass is now celebrated there every Sunday. Adjacent to the abbey, visit the monastery Notre-Dame du Torrent de Vie. There, a young community of contemplative and eremitic sisters of the Monas- tic Family of Bethlehem and of the Assumption of the Virgin, which also has a monastery in the Archdiocese of New York, welcomes you. They are a testi- mony to the renewal of the Faith in France. ->Meeting with Bishop Dominique Rey, bishop of Frejus-Toulon, who is actively involved in the new evangelization. ->Mass in the monastery with the Sisters of Bethleem. Transfer to Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (34 miles). Dinner at the hotel. ->Private concert featuring Gregorian chant in the Basilica de Santa Maria Magdalena with Jubilate Toulon Choir (Gregorian chant). ->MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Evening Overnight at the Royal Convent in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume.

Day 4: SAINT-MAXIMIN-LA-SAINTE-BAUME / CANNES / ILE DE LERINS / CANNES / SAINT-MAXIMIN Today you will live a special day in the desert at the wonderful abbey of Lérins. Breakfast at the hotel. ->MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Morning Transfer to Cannes (50 miles). Boat ride Cannes / Ile de Lérins. Mass in the abbey. ->Wine tasting. Lunch at the abbey (pending). Visit the Benedictine Abbey of Lérins (with its fortified tower) on the island of Saint Honorat, south of Cannes on the Azur Coast. Here in this magnificent desert landscape, the brothers invite you to share in silent prayer and contemplation. Their relationship with the world is illustrated by the Abbey's position on the Island of Saint-Honorat, near the coast but separated by the sea, enabling them to be "in the world" without being "of the world." The brothers live by the rule of Saint Benedict, which combines prayer and work. The abbey is particularly known for its production of good wines and liquors. In the 5th century, Saint Honorat was drawn to the monastic ideal and founded the community on the island of Lérina, which now bears the name of the saint. This monastery would rapidly become one of the greatest centers of Western monasticism. The abbey was a profound spiritual influence on many brothers including Saint Maxim and its founder Saint Honorat, who went on to become Bishop of Arles. They and other bishops from the abbey were greatly responsible for the conversion of Pro- vence to Catholicism. Several well-known saints spent time at the abbey of Lérins including Saint Patrick, who lived here before leaving to bring the Gospel to Ireland. ->Meeting with a brother of the religious community for lectio divina. Boat ride Ile de Lérins / Cannes. Transfer to Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (70 miles). ->MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Evening Dinner and overnight at the Royal Convent in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume.

Day 5: SAINT-MAXIMIN-LA-SAINTE-BAUME / GORDES / AVIGNON Breakfast at the hotel. ->MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Morning Transfer to Gordes (72 miles). Mass The Abbey of Sénanque is located in the heart of Provence in an extraordinarily beautiful setting highlighted by fields of lavender. One of the purest exam- ples of early Cistercian architecture, the abbey is still in use by a community of Cistercian monks. We will enjoy a guided tour of the 12th century abbey including the dormitory, the abbey church, the cloister, the heating room, and the chapter room. As the monks say, it is the testimony of men brought together by the call of Christ to follow him more closely that gives meaning to the religious edifice." The Cistercians organize their day around three pillars: the liturgical divine offices, lectio divina, and work. The offices high- light that communal praise of and thanksgiving to God is paramount above all other activities and reminds us that even one's work is itself a praise offering. Obedient to the Rule of Saint Benedict, which indicates "they are truly monks if they live by the work of their hands,” the Brothers of Sénanque produce honey, essential oils, jams, beauty products, and numer- ous items derived from lavender—all available at the abbey store. Lunch on your own in the wonderful village of Gordes, "one of the most beautiful villages in France.” Transfer to Avignon (24 miles). Visit the famous papal palace, listed by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. Avignon was the seat of the papacy between 1309 and 1423 before it returned to Rome. The construction of the palace began in 1335. It is the largest example of Medieval Gothic construction. Two popes were responsible for directing the construction and gave the palace elements of a Christian fortress — ramparts, a keep, moats, and a magnificent chapel. Six conclaves were held here and resulted in the elections of Benedict XII, Clement VI, Innocent VI, Urban V, Gregory XI, and Benedict XIII. The pa- pacy returned to Rome after improved relations between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches and for political reasons. Today, the papal palace is open to all. It is also known for its famous Festival d'Avignon, one of the most important international festivals of contemporary entertainment. -> MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Evening Dinner and overnight in a 4-star hotel.

Day 6: AVIGNON / CARCASSONNE / LOURDES Breakfast at the hotel. -> MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Morning in the motorcoach -> Mass Transfer to Carcassonne (148 miles). Visit the fortified city of Carcassonne, exceptionally well-preserved and of rare beauty. Your visit here will give you an idea of what it would have been like to live in the Middle Ages. Situated in the south of France, not far off the Medi- terranean Sea and the Pyrennes Mountains, Carcassonne is known worldwide and is listed by Unesco as a World Her- itage Site. A leisurely walk will take you through small paved streets, from the chateau to the ramparts, passing by ancient homes and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire. This rocky peak has been inhabited since the 4th century BC, and the town has been protected by ramparts since the 3rd century. First a Gallic city and then a Roman one, it became the impregnable fortress that it is today in the 13th century. This remarkable masterpiece of military architecture is well-preserved. Each year on Bastille Day, the city is illuminated by a spectacular fireworks display. Lunch on your own. Transfer to Fanjeaux (18 miles). → Meeting with the “Community of the Lamb.” A branch of the , the Community of the Lamb (Communaté de l’Agneau in French) is the name of a young Roman Catholic religious com- munity with two branches, the Little Sisters of the Lamb (Petites Soeurs de l’Agneau) and the Little Brothers of the Lamb (Petits Frères de l’Agneau). The Community also has a branch in Kansas City as requested by its bishop. The community is shaped both by Dominican and Franciscan spirituality, uniting the proclamation of the Gospel through preaching with commitment to the poor. The motto of the community is "Wounded, I will never cease to love.” The members of the community engage in active door-to-door mission by going begging for their food. They also share their table with the poor, especially the homeless. They live together in small communities. Transfer to Lourdes (154 miles). → Magnificat Prayer for the Evening in the motorcoach Dinner and overnight in a 4-star hotel.

Day 7: LOURDES Breakfast at the hotel. MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Morning in a chapel of the sanctuary. Today, we begin our pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes at the doorway to the Pyrenees. Known throughout the world, here the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette, the uneducated shepherdess, announcing herself as the Immaculate Conception. Today, the grotto is a place of prayer for all the pilgrims who flock here, many seeking cures for the sick. Many miraculous healings have been documented by the church. Both physical and spiritual healings continue to this day. The Museum of the Miraculously Healed and the Office of Medical Observations within the confines of the sanctuary attest to the authenticity of the miracles. You can walk in the footsteps of Bernadette and visit the places where she lived such as the Boly Mill, where she grew up in the abandoned one-room prison where her family was forced to move when they became impoverished. The shrine offers the possibility of deepening one's relationship with the Virgin Mary. Opportunities to participate in a time of prayer at the grotto of the apparitions, walk the Way of the Cross, go to the baths, see a movie about the story of Saint Bernadette, and go to confession. Pilgrims can take some water from Lourdes for friends or for themselves. The story of Our Lady of Lourdes begins with a young girl, Bernadette, who was born in 1844. In spite of a very difficult life, she received a special grace. After her father, a miller lost his business, Bernadette lived in a former prison with her parents, her sister, and her three brothers. She once said, “It is because I was the poorest and the most ignorant that the Holy Virgin chose me.” On February 11, 1858, and on several subsequent occasions, that the Virgin appeared to and revealed messages to Bernadette. Following the Virgin's instruc- tions, Bernadette uncovered a spring from which water with healing powers has been flowing for over 150 years. Berna- dette later entered religious life in Nevers. Today, Lourdes is the third most visited pilgrimage site in the world today and the second most visited town in France after Paris. → Mass. Lunch on your own and free time in the afternoon. → MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Evening in a chapel of the sanctuary. Dinner and overnight in a 4-star hotel.

Day 8: LOURDES / SAINTES / NANTES Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Saintes (226 miles). Visit the new community of “The Apostles of Life," founded by the famous Father Marie-Angel Carré, dedicated to the new evangelization of young people and families. This community was accepted by Bishop Georges Colomb, Bishop of Saintes and former Superior of the Foreign Missions of Paris. Mass in the chapel of the community. Lunch with the Apostles of Life. Transfer to Nantes (148 miles). Dinner and overnight in a 4-star hotel.

Day 9: NANTES / LE MONT-SAINT-MICHEL / LE TRONCHET Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Le Mont-Saint-Michel (117 miles). → MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Morning in the motorcoach. Visit the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel. Stroll through this charming village with stone houses and narrow streets, built on a rock off the coast of Normandy and surrounded by one of the world's largest bays known for the tide that "comes in with the speed of a galloping horse.” The village and the bay are listed among Unesco's World Heritage Sites. In 709 AD, after the first apparitions of St. Michael the Archangel, a chapel was built on the mount and dedicated to him. Nearly 300 years later, the Benedictine monks established their community. They reorganized the existing buildings to create a monastery to welcome pilgrims. Subsequently, a pilgrimage to Mont-Saint-Michel has become one of the most famous in the Christian world. Transformed into a prison during the French Revolution, the abbey was later restored and eventually listed as a national historical monument before a religious community was re-established in residence. Today, the Monastic Fraternity of Jerusalem lives here, a renewal community whose vocation is to provide an oasis of prayer in the heart of towns. Their liturgy is sung in two parts by both men and women and perfectly complements the architectural beauty of the abbey. Today, many pilgrims choose to cross the bay on foot in imitation of medieval pilgrims. NB.: The visit begins with the bus drop-off in the parking lot, which is situated at a distance of 1.5 miles away. A free shuttle from there will bring you to within 300 yards of the entrance to the citadel. From there, it is an easy 215 yard walk through the village by the paved main street. Once you have reached the parish church, the "Grand Degré" begins, a climb of about 350 steps up to the abbey. There is no elevator. Mass Lunch on your own. Transfer to Le Tronchet (26 miles). Dinner and overnight in a 4-star hotel.

Day 10: LE TRONCHET / OMAHA BEACH / COLEVILLE-SUR-MER / PONT-AUDEMER Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to Omaha Beach (100 miles). On June 6, 1944, tens of thousands of American, English, Canadian, Scottish, and French soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy to free France from the Nazi stranglehold. Thousands of young soldiers died that first day in the name of liberty, a sacrifice that defines greatness in the human spirit. The coast of Normandy still bears the indelible scars from that event. Walk on the beach. Lunch on your own. Transfer to Coleville-sur-Mer (3 miles). Visit the American Cemetery, where these young soldiers are buried. Prayer time in the chapel of the American Cemetery (N.B.: Seating is limited to 25.) Transfer to Lisieux (71 miles). Visit to the sanctuary of Lisieux. Visit the basilica and watch a movie about the life of Saint Thérèse, doctor of the Church and called "the little Therese" by the pilgrims who appreciate her gospel simplicity. Visit to the "Buissonnets," the family home where Saint Thérèse spent her childhood. Visit the Carmelite convent where she remained cloistered until her death. Pray near her relics at her shrine. → Guided Eucharistic adoration in the carmel. Born in Alençon, Thérèse spent more than 10 years in Lisieux in the house called "les Buissonnets." At the age of 15, she told her father of her desire to become a Carmelite nun. She traveled all the way to Rome with him to make the request directly to Pope Leo XIII and became a Carmelite two years later. At the request of the prioress she began the autobio- graphical "History of a Soul," which she completed before her death at 24. Thérèse was quickly beatified and canonized at the request of her worldwide readers. Healings have been experienced among those who come to pray at her tomb. An enormous basilica was built to welcome the crowds coming from the four corners of the world after discovering her “little way” to holiness. Saint Pope John Paul II came to pray here during his trip to France in 1980. Today, pilgrims can come to pray for the intercession of this saint who promised to spend her time in heaven doing good on earth. Visit to Saint Peter Cathedral where the Martin family attended Mass regularly. Transfer to your hotel in Lisieux or to Pont-Audemer (22 miles) or to Rouen (60 miles). → MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Evening in the motorcoach. Dinner and overnight in a 3-star hotel if you stay in Lisieux or in a 4-star hotel if you stay in Pont-Audemer or Rouen.

Day 11: PONT-AUDEMER / PARIS Breakfast at the hotel. Mass Transfer to Paris (127 miles from Lisieux, 101 miles from Pont-Audemer, 84 miles from Rouen). Pilgrimage to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, where several apparitions of the Virgin Mary took place in 1830. After several apparitions from both Saint Vincent de Paul and Christ, Catherine Labouré had the joy of speaking three times with the Virgin Mary from July to December 1830. The young novice of the Daughters of Charity was awakened in the middle of the night and invited to go to pray in the community's chapel. It was there that the Virgin appeared for the first time. The Virgin asked her to offer to the world a medal for which she gave the details. This object, simple but full of symbolism, profoundly affected the Parisian spirit when the city was hit with a terrible epi- demic of cholera in 1832. The daughters of Charity distributed the first medals. Healings and conversions increased significantly. The sisters were over- whelmed by requests for the medal that Parisians soon began calling "miraculous," the name it still bears today. These apparitions to Saint Catherine La- bouré are recognized by the Church. It remains a very spiritual place of peace and silence in the heart of Paris. Here, one traditionally invokes the Virgin Mary with this prayer: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” One can also learn about the life of Saint Catherine La- bouré and receive a Miraculous Medal as a gift from the Daughters of Charity. You can pray in the location of the apparitions or in front of Saint Cathe- rine's reliquary. Just a few blocks away from the chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, visit the chapel and relics of Saint Vincent de Paul. At this chapel, pilgrims may pray to Saint Vincent, who is often called the "Apostle of Charity." Saint Vincent de Paul was born in 1581 and had a lifelong concern for the poverty stricken. Ordained a priest in 1600, he organized a group of well-to-do women in a ministry to the penniless and the sick. He also ministered to slaves and peasants. He was the founder and superior of the community of Lazarists, a group of priests whose apostolic mission is in rural areas. He also founded the Daughters of Charity, as well as a mission seminary which formed many priests who served in Madagascar. Until his death in 1660, he led many projects for the poor in Paris and was proclaimed a saint by Pope Clement XII on June 16, 1737. → Meeting with Fleur Nabert, Catholic artist (exact place to be determined). Lunch with Pierre-Marie Dumont (founding publisher of MAGNIFICAT) in a private area of the restaurant of La Madeleine Church. Visit the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre and experience an amazing view of Paris. In 1870, war broke out between France and , and France was invaded. The idea took hold that the ordeals incurred by France were due to its spiritual faults rather than only political ones. This gave birth to the construction of a basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This project was seen as atonement and also as a force of hope and spiritual renewal. Parisian and French Christians pledged to establish perpetual prayer at the basilica in exchange for the protection of Paris. In 1872, the of Paris approved the project and chose the hill of Montmartre for the site. The funds for its construction were raised through donations—often modest— from people all over France. Donors’ names are engraved in the stone of the basilica. For over a cen- tury, Parisians and pilgrims from all over the world have maintained the continuous prayer. Montmartre is a hill overlooking Paris north of the river Seine. It is a lively neighborhood well- known for its ideal location, the romantic charm of its small streets, and for the many artists who took up residence there at the end of the 19th century. Its name comes from Saint Denis, the first Bishop of Paris, who died as a martyr in the 3rd century. Tradition holds that he and his companions died here inspiring its name, Montmarte, "the mount of martyrs." → Mass → Concert in Saint Pierre de Montmartre Church (location TBD) Dinner at La Bonne Franquette, typical French Brasserie of Montmartre. Dinner and overnight in a 4-star hotel.

Day 12: PARIS Breakfast at the hotel. → MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Morning On the Ile de la Cité, in the historic heart of Paris, visit the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris, a jewel of gothic art. Visit this unique site which is still a place of rich spirituality with around twenty priests ordained each year. Construction of this splendid cathedral began in 1160 when the bishop of Paris wanted his diocese to have a new cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The first stone was laid in 1163 in the presence of Pope Alexander III. This architectural jewel, with its spectacular and enormous rose windows, met the bishop's expectations perfectly; and it became the symbol of Paris and Catholic France. → Possible tour of the towers of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. Visit the Sainte Chapelle (Holy Chapel), an incomparable architectural treasure hidden on the island of the Ile de la Cité in the center of Paris. The lower portion of the chapel features bright colors and an open-work while the upper portion is bathed in light flooding through enormous stained-glass windows. This masterpiece was five years in the making and was built as a royal ecrin to receive the holy relics of the Crown of Thorns acquired by French King Louis IX, in an agreement he made with Emperor Beaudouin II de Courtenay in the early 13th century. In order to raise money to finance his kingdom's ventures, and after extensive negotiations in which the authenticity of the relic was verified, Emperor Beaudouin II de Courtenay sold the Holy Crown of Thorns in 1239. Two years later, King Louis IX acquired other relics of Christ's Passion, including a portion of the Holy Cross. The relics are now housed in the Cathedral of Notre Dame, just a few meters away. → Lunch on your own. Cultural and spiritual guided tour of the famous Louvre museum, one of the largest and most important in the world—a French cultural sight not to be missed! Visitors from around the world come to discover the treasures in these exceptional collections. The eight galleries (Oriental, Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities, Islamic art, sculptures, art objects, paintings and graphic arts) make up only a fraction ofthe collection housed here. The Louvre's collection boasts the world's best-known pieces of art, including Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, The Wedding Feast of Cana by Ve- ronese, and Quarton's La Pieta de Villenueve-les-Avignon. Located in central Paris, the Louvre was constructed as a palace in 1190 by Philippe Augustus and served as a royal residence for the Kings of France through the reign of King Louis XV. Over the centuries, each king left his own touch by adding a wing or even changing the general architectural style. In 1791, just after the French Revolution, the Louvre was decreed "a union of all the monuments of sciences and arts.” It opened to the public on August 10, 1793. Today one enters through a sixty-five foot tall glass pyramid—a design built at the request of President François Mitterand. Visit the Eiffel Tower, where we will marvel at the exterior of this iconic symbol of Paris. Its 6 million visitors each year make it, after the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the most viewed sight in all of France. Built in only two years for the 1889 World Fair, it was first called the "300 meter tower" but then took the name of its creator, Gustave Eiffel. The tower was supposed to be torn down once the World Fair was over but was happily spared as it proved itself to be useful for scientific research as a weather station and broadcast tower for radio and telephone. --> Farewell dinner in Brasserie

Day 13: PARIS Breakfast at the hotel. → MAGNIFICAT Prayer for the Morning. → Mass Transfer to the airport. Please note: October departure features 3 nights in Paris with no changes in the visits.
