“The Radiator Newsletter” October 2017 R AACA Antique Automobile Club of America Hillsborough Region “The Radiator Newsletter” www.AACAHillsborough.com October 2017 r Dear Members, One of our national club’s biggest events annually is in Hershey, PA, which takes place every year in October. According to our club member Dave Kurash, who attended this year, it was fantastic weather this year. Which if you have attended Hershey in the past, it is notorious for horrible weather. Sorry to say this year Joanne and I were not there! I want to thank all the people who have volunteered to help with our upcoming event, the Gasparilla Concours d’Elegance, scheduled for April 13, 2019. We will need more help, so please consider volunteering for the Organizational Committee. More information is in the newsletter, but please contact Joanne to let her know you want to be involved. We have a few upcoming events, so please check out the club calendar for more details. The Turkey Run is taking place Saturday, November 18th. We will start in Tampa at 10am. More about the venue to be announced, but please call me so we can get a headcount. Another one of our clubs upcoming events is Brookdale ALF, Saturday, December 2, organized by Howie Mednick this year. Please support this event and let Howie know if you can come (808) 347-0912 [email protected] Several members (Angelo & John Peters as Judges, Dave and Katherine Kurash as Volunteers, Larry & Micki, Joanne & myself as Participants) participated in the recent Lake Mirror Classic in Lakeland. We all had a great time and as always the venue and weather were perfect! We have new members! Terry Sparks and Jeff Souza. Please make them feel welcome next time you meet up! Last but definitely not least, we are making a club calendar for 2018! So please email me the best photo you have of your car(s) ASAP. If you need a photo taken, just let me know and we can make the arrangements to get a nice one taken. Let’s tour with our cars in this beautiful weather! 1 New shirts are here and for sale @$27; Pins $5; Windbreakers $21 Call Ron Martin (813) 220-5109 Meet-Ups Our Monthly Meet-ups are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Larry Rumore. We have a winner! Danny did an outstanding job with his model car restoration. Thanks for the effort, it was fun! 3 Member Profile….. by Bob Slaney Chris Dunn This month, we highlight AACA member, Chris Dunn. Chris has been a member of AACA for almost 30 years and is a faithful Ford guy. The first car he owned was a 1964 Mercury Colony Park and he currently owns these beautiful cars: 1958 Lincoln Continental Sedan 1961 Lincoln Continental Sedan 1962 Lincoln Continental Sedan 1062 Lincoln Continental convert 1963 Lincoln Continental convert 1968 Lincoln Continental Coupe 1969 Lincoln Continental Mark III 1962 Mercury Colony Park 1963 Mercury Colony Park 1964 Mercury Colony Park (2) 1964 Ford Country Squire Chris was born in Syracuse, New York and has two brothers and sisters. He told me that his parents were great as they were growing up. When Chris was six years old, his Dad bought a new 1964 Mercury Colony Park station wagon (shown in the photo). One day it was in the showroom; the next it 4 was in their garage. Chris learned to drive in the Mercury wagon and it is still in his garage today!! The family’s first trip in the Colony Park was to Clearwater. Chris has a 22 year old son who's in senior year of college in Berlin…..as well as a 15 year old cat. Chris learned how to maintain cars over the years and started with his family’s 64 Mercury when he replaced the power brake booster. Chris’ cars don’t sit idle. He once drove a 1961 Lincoln Continental convertible to Chicago and back, and then to Toronto and back to attend different shows. Be prepared to talk Fords when you next see Chris Dunn! Chris owns Lincoln Land of Clearwater, President since 1984. They specialize in 1956 through 1989 Lincoln Continental, Town Car and Mark series parts. Another Great Halloween Party at Larry Rumore’s! Great chicken and yellow rice cooked by Larry Rumore, and a costume contest with games and prizes. Thank you Larry for your hard work and fabulous food! Don’t miss it next year! 5 Officers & Board of Directors Coming Up… President: Brando Pistorius 813-917-9205 [email protected] Turkey Run Vice President: This will be a fun tour on the backroads to Dade City, Ron Martin where we know of a car guy’s annual gathering with Secretary: some fantastic antiques on display. • First Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours Story by Michael T
August 29th, 2007 First Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours Story by Michael T. Lynch A Free Event at Monterey With prices for some events now at $200 per person, Monterey Peninsula’s week of automotive festivities is sometimes out of reach for many enthusiasts. We report here on two events that are free to the public, but make no compromise in presenting some of the finest examples of automotive design and engineering seen during the week. At 11:00 AM on a clear Tuesday morning, during a run of the best weather ever seen during the Monterey Peninsula’s legendary annual festival of the automobile, a new star was born. As crowds stood amidst the distinctive architecture and towering pines shadowing Carmel’s Ocean Avenue shops, restaurants and galleries, Daniel Rodriguez, the retired New York policeman who inspired the country after the September 11 attacks, took the stage. His flawless rendition of the Star Spangled Banner officially opened the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue and was followed by a flyover of three L-39 jets. The Bernardus hors d'ouvres await the crowd at the Monday night Carmel Concours entrants' and VIP party at the Carmel Plaza. Credit: Gary Geiger When the stunned crowd again lowered their eyes to the street, 130 landmark automobiles produced during the almost unbroken 25 years of prosperity following World War II surrounded them. Cars present were associated with names from automotive history like Carroll Shelby, Jim Hall, Augie Pabst, A.J. Foyt, Bob Bondurant, Briggs Cunningham, Phil Walters and John Fitch, and one Cadillac carried Ike and Mamie Eisenhower to Ike’s first presidential inauguration.
