Venice is a floating masterpiece. It is rich in architecture and art; with marble churches built on the water of the Venice lagoon. With the highest density of masterpieces per km2 , Venice is also a commercial city. Inside its narrow streets (calli in the local language), the city is full of life: artisans that create shoes that seem masterpieces; chefs able to dish out the best courses in the world and musicians able to change from classical music to punk-rock sounds. Its magnificents palaces, like Palazzo Ducale and Museo Correr, are the theater of wonderful expositions, dedicated to the past, but also to the contemporary art. Without considering the masterpieces of architecture, such as San Mark’s square with the Basilica. Its architecture, a mixture of Byzantine, Roman and Venecian, is the work of artists and craftsmen coming from all over the world. Not to be missed are the islands, such as Murano with the glass working tradition, and Burano famous for its antique laces. St. Petersburg was named the Venice of the North for its channels lined with sumptuous palaces. The city preserves the heritage of the Tsar style untouched. The river Neva flows through the city and its delta creates a group of islands. St. Petersburg is a beautiful example of geometrical forms. Not to be missed is the visit to the Winter Palace, home of the Tsar‘s family from 1732 to 1917; today it hosts the Heritage museum. Another important place is the Red Church, built on the site of the Tsar’s killing. Vicenza is situated in Veneto region and is a middle-sized city with a population of 110.000 citizens. Its unique aspect, deriving mostly from the works of the 16 th century by the architect Andrea Palladio led the city to UNESCO heritage due to the villas of Palladio. Vicenza is the city of Palladio. He was one of the architects of the Renaissance, he was born in Padua and worked throughout Veneto, but his name is especially connected with Vicenza for his works. Palladio was also a champion of the ante litteram marketing: his architecture essays were so popular to curiously influence the English architecture of the 18 th century and the American one. Villa Almerico Capra also called “La Rotonda” is a villa of Veneto with a middle layout situated near the city of Vicenza. Paolo Almerico commissioned Andrea Palladio to build it starting from 1566. The Basilica of Palladio is the symbol building of Vicenza, designed by the great architect Palladio. It surrounds the medieval “Palazzo della Ragione”, it was inserted in the UNESCO in world heritage list in 1994. 9 Washington La Casa Blanca fue construida entre 1792 y 1800 por James Hoban, arquitecto irlandés.

A generation of architects, working in partnership with the directors of museums, set about transforming into exhibition spaces a number of ancient monumental complexes located in the historic centres of some of the most important Italian cities. Among these was the brilliant and solitary Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa who re- vitalised the discipline of museography by sagaciously combining it with restoration. His lucid intervention at Verona’s Museo di Castel- vecchio is emblematic of this approach: the medieval castle, the museum of ancient art, and modern architecture all harmoniously coexisting in a monument located at the heart of a city designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The wise and far-sighted choice of Scarpa was owed to the then director of the museum, Licisco Magagnato, who tenaciously argued the case for the appointment of an architect specialising in this field to work on the city’s principal museum of ancient art. In his work on the Castelvecchio, carried out at a significant point in his career, Scarpa attained a remarkable balance between various aesthetic elements that is particularly evident in the sculpture gallery, where the renovations harmonise with the power of the 14th-century Distributors Veronese works exhibited in this section of the museum.
