Good Start GOOD Start FIBAAMERICAS.COM Special issue 02 Feature Alex García, FIBA-Americas Championship 2009 August 27, 2009 The brazilian meteorite GOODGood When he played in the NBA for the San Antonio Spurs and the New Orleans Hornets, it was always heard that he was too small to play as a swingman, but he was already a valuable piece as a defender. Alex Garcia, who netted 21 points in the win over SStarttart the Dominican Republic, could not stay in the NBA by being a victim of many injuries but he played well in Israel in Maccabi Tel Aviv as they were runner up in the 2008 Euroleague. Despite being successful in Europe for his speed, he decided to return to Brazil as he played for Universo BRB, one of the best teams in the league. In the last couple of years he has been a shooting guard and small forward because of his strength and enormous jumping ability which is a plus for head coach Moncho Monsalve. First win for Brazil After two weeks of negotiation, Argentinean guard Pablo Prigioni entered the roster of Real Madrid and that allows him to play without worries with Argentina, who needed him at the II Marchand Continental Championship Cup as they lost all three games. The player elected as the best point guard in the ACB league last season arrives to Real Madrid after playing for six seasons in Tau Ceramica alongside Tiago Splitter who is one of the best players in Europe. Puerto Rican guard Walter Hodge made his debut with the US Virgin Islands national team with 12 points, taking advantage of his grandparents who were born in the USVI, his only inconvenient is that he will play as an import in Puerto Rico. Hodge, who won two NCAA titles with the Florida Gators, had to move to the USVI national team after seeing the number of great guards who might make the national team. The guard just wants to grow internationally and is happy about it. Photo: José Jiménez/FIBA Leandro Barbosa, looks to surpass the defensive effort of Francisco Garcia. Smart, relentless, and a defensive stopper at birth. Just like many other point guards from Argentina, he takes pride in locking up. He’s a pass first, score second point guard. He reminds me of a smaller Pablo Prigioni when it comes to passing. He’s a better scorer than Pablo in my opinion. If you look at typical Argentinian guards in Prigioni, Laprovittola, Bolmero and Campazzo, they all are defensive minded with the ability to pass at a high level and score. I question Campazzo’s size but with the wide spacing in the NBA, I believe he will be able to get in the lane to dish or score with a floater over bigs or just simply getting by someone. He’s cat quick with the ability to hit the open jump shot. I’ve played against Campazzo several times and know how he doesn’t back down from a challenge. He challenges you. He’s like the David against Goliath with a Napoleon complex. A real floor general as he’s the motor of the team.

The guard has averages of 11 points and 6.8 assists in five games, where they have won three. In the first win Prigioni led the Argentineans with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. "We turned the situation because with two losses it looked that we were in bad shape and we wouldn't qualify. With these wins we have a foot in Turkey," said Prigioni who will be in Real Madrid for the next two ACB seasons with an option for a third year. In their wins Argentina had a better offensive performance by Paolo Quinteros, Federico Kammerichs, Andrés Pelussi, Leo Gutiérrez and Prigioni who have helped Luis Scola who ended as the MVP of the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship. "We are now playing as a team, it is shown in the results, the game, everything. This is not something new," said Prigioni. "It is very important this change in our game that gives us a guarantee in the games that follow," he added. About his expectations with a new team in the ACB, the player is happy for signing with Real Madrid which historically has been one of the main teams in Spain.
