  • Performing Blackness in the Danza De Caporales
Roper, Danielle. 2019. Blackface at the Andean Fiesta: Performing Blackness in the Danza de Caporales. Latin American Research Review 54(2), pp. 381–397. DOI: https://doi.org/10.25222/larr.300 OTHER ARTS AND HUMANITIES Blackface at the Andean Fiesta: Performing Blackness in the Danza de Caporales Danielle Roper University of Chicago, US [email protected] This study assesses the deployment of blackface in a performance of the Danza de Caporales at La Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria in Puno, Peru, by the performance troupe Sambos Illimani con Sentimiento y Devoción. Since blackface is so widely associated with the nineteenth- century US blackface minstrel tradition, this article develops the concept of “hemispheric blackface” to expand common understandings of the form. It historicizes Sambos’ deployment of blackface within an Andean performance tradition known as the Tundique, and then traces the way multiple hemispheric performance traditions can converge in a single blackface act. It underscores the amorphous nature of blackface itself and critically assesses its role in producing anti-blackness in the performance.

  • Romanian Traditional Musical Instruments
GRU-10-P-LP-57-DJ-TR ROMANIAN TRADITIONAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Romania is a European country whose population consists mainly (approx. 90%) of ethnic Romanians, as well as a variety of minorities such as German, Hungarian and Roma (Gypsy) populations. This has resulted in a multicultural environment which includes active ethnic music scenes. Romania also has thriving scenes in the fields of pop music, hip hop, heavy metal and rock and roll. During the first decade of the 21st century some Europop groups, such as Morandi, Akcent, and Yarabi, achieved success abroad. Traditional Romanian folk music remains popular, and some folk musicians have come to national (and even international) fame. ROMANIAN TRADITIONAL MUSIC Folk music is the oldest form of Romanian musical creation, characterized by great vitality; it is the defining source of the cultured musical creation, both religious and lay. Conservation of Romanian folk music has been aided by a large and enduring audience, and by numerous performers who helped propagate and further develop the folk sound. (One of them, Gheorghe Zamfir, is famous throughout the world today, and helped popularize a traditional Romanian folk instrument, the panpipes.) The earliest music was played on various pipes with rhythmical accompaniment later added by a cobza. This style can be still found in Moldavian Carpathian regions of Vrancea and Bucovina and with the Hungarian Csango minority. The Greek historians have recorded that the Dacians played guitars, and priests perform songs with added guitars. The bagpipe was popular from medieval times, as it was in most European countries, but became rare in recent times before a 20th century revival.

By contrast, music which is popular but perceived as “bad” has generated surprisingly little interest. This dissertation looks at Polish post-socialist music through the lenses of musical phenomena that came to prominence after socialism collapsed but which are perceived as controversial, undesired, shameful, and even dangerous. They run the gamut from the perceived nadir of popular music to some works of the most renowned contemporary classical composers that are associated with the suffix -polo, an expression

  • A Lovely Preview! James Chapman a Bad Workman Blames His Tools
Hello! This is a preview of a book I’m funding on Kickstarter called “A World of Wisdom” It’s a book of sayings from around the world. Some are unique to a single country, and others demonstrate ideas that are common all across the globe, they’re just expressed in different ways influenced by the culture surrounding them. It’s a lot of fun! For example, “the pot calling the kettle black” is a common English expression about not pointing out others flaws if you’re not perfect yourself. Kettles are pretty important to the people of England as we can’t get enough of that TEA. But around the world, other things capture the public eye more than kettles do, and alternate versions of this same idea have come into usage. In France, where cheese is the bees knees ‘the Roquefort tells the Camembert it stinks!” and funnily enough in Japan, “a monkey laughs at another’s red butt’. The phrases we use on a daily basis are shaped by our culture (food, weather, local wildlife) and while the sayingss in this book might seem different on the surface, the same ideas are being expressed just using different relatable comparisons. This little preview shows the first few sections of the book, with some nice sayings about dancing, and other fun comparisons, but the full book (216 pages of it) contains so much more. If you’d like to get a full copy, please support the project on Kickstarter here (starting May 1) and help bring it to life!
