Abrams* "[A] page of history is worth a volume of logic."-Oliver Wendell Holmes1 I. INTRODUCTION Spectators attending sporting events have suffered injuries since time immemorial. Life in the earliest civilizations included festivals involving sports contests. Following the death of Alexander the Great, sports became a professional entertainment for Greek spectators who would pay entrance fees to watch the contests.2 Undoubtedly, the spectators who filled the tiered stadia suffered injuries. A runaway chariot or wayward spear thrown in the Roman Coliseum likely impaled an onlooker sitting on the platforms (called spectacula, based on their similarity to the deck of the ship and the basis for the English word "spectator").

  • Dr. Charles A. Steinberg Executive Vice President & Senior Advisor to the President/CEO
Dr. Charles A. Steinberg Executive Vice President & Senior Advisor to the President/CEO Dr. Charles Steinberg returned to the Red Sox on February 17, 2012, after four years away--two with the Los Angeles Dodgers and two with the Commissioner of Baseball. Public Relations and Community Relations are among his responsibilities. In 2013, “Dr. Charles” helped orchestrate the April 20 ceremony at Fenway Park that followed the Boston Marathon tragedy of April 15. Thereafter, he continued to help the club embrace the heroes, survivors, and bereaved families, culminating on November 2 with the tribute at the Finish Line during the “Rolling Rally,” the world championship parade. Ironically, the April 20 tribute was one year to the day that he helped Fenway Park celebrate its 100th Anniversary. In his previous six seasons in Boston, as Executive Vice President for Public Affairs, Steinberg was a creative force in the franchise’s fan-friendly attitude, good will, market outreach, and communications. Among his responsibilities and innovations were the Opening Day ceremonies (including the presentation of the world championship rings in 2005), players greeting fans at the gates, the Father’s Day Catch at Fenway, the Celebration of the Life of Ted Williams, the establishment of the Red Sox/Jimmy Fund Radiotelethon, the creation of the Fenway Ambassadors program, the Red Cross Blood Drive each September 11, as well as community events on Halloween, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, the birthdays of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jackie Robinson, and Valentine’s Day. When he first arrived in Boston, together with the new ownership in 2002, Steinberg helped cultivate the passionate Red Sox Nation fan base and contributed to the improvements that enabled the ownership to save Fenway Park.

  • Wdam Radio's Greatest Baseball Hits
THE MUSIC FAN'S SCORECARD TO WDAM RADIO'S GREATEST BASEBALL HITS It's a hit! WDAM Radio's "Greatest Baseball Hits" is the greatest roster of songs about baseball of ever assembled on one team of MP3 files! The WDAM Sports Department has scouted our famous Groove Yard (one of the largest collections of recorded music this side...or any side...of Cooperstown) to find the most major and minor league melodies you could ever imagine – from "America's Greatest Imaginary Station." In addition to these diamond discs and all-star anthems, our lineup also includes memorable play-by-play moments, just as you might have heard them on the radio. And in between innings, we pinch hit some selected baseball movie themes. You'll need a scorecard to truly enjoy this collection, so we have provided one, along with important stats about the songs, on the pages that follow.” These stats include the year, and for those recordings that actually made Billboard magazine's pop music charts, the highest position reached is designated by "#." Many of these selections are particularly rare (and they are labeled as such), so you won't find them at your favorite music source or sports store. Obviously, WDAM Radio's "Greatest Baseball Hits" is in a league of its own. All of us at the station hope you'll have as much fun with this collection as we did assembling it! Play ball! Radio Dave 0001. Mr. Announcer & The WDAM Radio Singers – “Station Identification” 0002. Harry Simeone Songsters – "It's A Beautiful For A Ballgame" (1960) 0003.
