For many decades book clubs would mark their editions with a blind stamp or colored deboss on the tail of the back board, near the spine. This one dealt with the Holy Land, from the time when man was first a man out of ape-stage, still living in a cave and built the first house. The printers fixed that error by tipping in the missing page, creating the second state of the first edition. I am awed by the scope of this book. This book makes me want to learn and read more. I recommend it to those who are interested in learning more about Israel and surrounding places. So I don't know what he means by referring to the Arab archaeologist, Jemail Tabari, as a 'scion of Ur', and a 'descendant of Jabaal the Hoopoe'. Note: some of the story does take place in Italy in the middle-ages as Michener relates the plight of Jews there and their decision to migrate to the Land of Israel. When they reach the oldest artifact, the book shifts its setting to when people used that artifact caveman days , and proceeds to tell the story of those people, when man first discovered deity. The story is told through an excavation of a site in northe The Source is another of James Michener's epic fictional histories. I have read a number of Michener's books and this is one the best. A very good copy that has some wear to the cloth in a very good mylar protected DJ with some edge wear and light chipping but not price clipped. This was a book that helped me have a more complete view of world history and all the tensions surrounding the middle east. The Second and Third stated printings are the smallest printings. Instead, it turns out it was just a setup for the actual book, which takes each of the artifacts they conveniently found in a matter of a few short pages and then turns each of those into their own section, a moment in history that is then fleshed out for us to see how the artifact lived in its original life.     Kabbalah and the Subversion of Traditional Jewish Society in Early Modern Europe David B. Ruderman Most discussions about notions of authority and dissent in early mod- em Europe usually imply those embedded in Christian traditions, whether Protestant or Catholic. To address these same issues from the perspective of Jewish culture in early modem Europe is to consider the subject from a relatively different vantage point. The small Jewish com- munities of the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries were shaped in manifold ways by the norms and values of the Christian and Moslem host civilizations to which they belonged. Yet, they were also heirs to powerful rabbinic religious and political traditions that structured their social relationships and shaped their attitudes towards divine law, human responsibility, communal discipline, and authority. To examine their uni- verse of discourse in its proper context is to view it both in its own cul- tural terms and in its dialogue and negotiation with the non-Jewish world. No period in Jewish cultural history has undergone more radical refor- mulation and revision by recent scholarship than the early modem; though to what extent conventional schemes of periodization like "early modern," "Renaissance," or "baroque" can be meaningfully applied to the Jewish cultural experience is a question which still engenders much discussion and debate.' Journal of American Studies 18 (2017): 5-15 ISSN: 1896-9461, https://doi.org/10.12797/AdAmericam.18.2017.18.01 Łukasz Barciński Institute of English Studies, University of Rzeszow, Rzeszow, Poland The Intricacies of the Postmodern Convention – Thomas Ruggles Pynchon in Polish Translation The article presents the prominent figure of the contemporary American writer, Thomas Ruggles Pynchon, a leading representative of the postmodern literary convention. The study contains a brief introduction of his works, with a special focus on the canonical novel for the postmodern convention i.e. Gravity’s Rainbow. The study will also apply McHale’s concept of ‘ontological dominant,’ which aptly describes the shift from epis- temological issues to existential ones occurring from modernist to postmodernist litera- ture. Subsequently, the article discusses the main aspects of Pynchon’s literary works and e.g. the presumed mode of reading i.e. ‘creative paranoia,’ encyclopaedicity and the inter- pretatively inconclusive binarities. Then, two fragments from Gravity’s Rainbow in Polish translation are analyzed in terms of the preservation of the source text sense productive potential according to Venuti’s theory of ‘foreignization.’ Finally, the study offers conclu- sions related to the reasons as to why there seem to be considerable deficiencies in the Pol- ish rendition of Pynchon’s novels, attributing this fact to the lack of an equivalent literary convention in the Polish literary environment.
