Suddenly, it seemed as though celebrities were slapping their names on wine labels and promoting themselves as working winemakers. Nick wondered if these celebrities were actually involved in the winemaking process, and he wanted to learn more. That was the beginning of our first adventure in making books together. We embarked on an extensive wine tour, a journey that took us from Napa to Tuscany to find the famous people who were claiming to be modern winemakers. After our book,Celebrity Vineyards, was published in 2013, we wrote a follow-up edition that focused solely on the West Coast. California Celebrity Vineyards: From Napa to Los Olivos in Search of Great Wine was published in February 2016. By this time, another winemaking region had captured Nick’s imagination and his palate: The Pacific Northwest. He’d discovered that his favorite wine shop, Handford’s, in West London, near where he lives, had begun stocking wines from places called Cristom, Domaine Serene, and Archery Summit. With this introduction to the wines of Oregon, Nick realized that these Pinot Noirs could easily compete with some of his favorites from Burgundy. This was both a delight and a sur- prise. Nick wanted to visit the region, one of the few wine- making areas of the world he had never seen. The original idea was to write a book about the wines of Oregon and Washington called The Wines of the Pacific Northwest. To that end, we packed up and headed off to Portland in March 2016. Joining us was Nick’s recent bride, Julie, who would be our resident photographer. We started where most of Nick’s favorite wineries were located—in the Willamette Valley, which runs southward from the Columbia River at Portland for nearly 150 miles. The region is divided into six sub-AVAs: Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, Ribbon Ridge, McMinnville, Yamhill-Carlton District, and Chehalem Mountains. We soon discovered that material—the people we met were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about winemaking. Like the song, “Sugartime,” from the 1950s sung by the McGuire Sisters, it was “Sugar (Pinot) in the morning, Sugar (Pinot) in the evening, Sugar (Pinot) at suppertime. Be my little sugar, And love me (Pinot) all the time.” The trail first led me to Santa Barbara for the 14th Annual World of Pinot Noir, then to San Francisco for three more memorable events: a special retrospective tasting of the wines of Ted Lemon titled “30 Years of Winemaking, 20 years of Littorai,” at Jardiniere restaurant on March 2, Affairs of the Vine Pinot Noir Summit at The Golden Gate Club on March 9, and the In Pursuit of Balance seminars and tasting at Bluxome Street Winery on March 10. I will give a full report on each stop along the Pinot Trail in this issue and those to follow, highlighting some of the special wines I tasted. Some have accused me of being a Pinot pimp and rightfully so. The International Pinot Noir Celebration (IPNC) is held on the intimate and bucolic campus of Linfield College, but there is no homework or written tests, and no dreadful lectures at 8:00 in the morning, just an abundance of great Pinot Noir paired with the delicious bounty of Oregon prepared by the Pacific Northwest’s most talented chefs, and plenty of joie de vivre. This year’s IPNC, held on July 24-26, 2009, marked the twenty-third event, dating back to 1987, when a group of grape farmers and winemakers assembled to figure out a way to promote Oregon wine.

  • 2007 Pinot Noir Southeast Block
    THE SOUTHEAST BLOCK The Southeast Block is a six-acre section of the Bethel Heights estate vineyard that consistently gives us wines of distinctive character. It was planted in 1979 on a south-facing slope between 420 and 520 feet elevation. The red clay soil is volcanic in origin, three feet deep and well drained. The vines are 100% Pommard clone, planted on their own roots in Oregon's pre- phylloxera days. At 30 years old the vines are still healthy and apparently phylloxera-free. The crop is held close to two tons per acre for optimum quality. THE 2007 VINTAGE was a classic cool Oregon vintage, similar to 2005 (and 1999 and 2001) and 2007 PINOT NOIR ® SOUTHEAST BLOCK very different from 2006, our hottest vintage on record. In 2007, the summer provided adequate Certified Sustainably Grown heat to ripen the fruit, and the fall finished cool, allowing the grapes to fully express their varietal Harvest date: October 5th, 2007 character without losing acidity and without Grapes at harvest: accumulating excessively amounts of sugar, as Pinot noir tends to do in hot vintages.     Bourgogne Chardonnay 2016 Grape Variety : Chardonnay Vineyard Site: Bourgogne white is made with the Chardonnay grape coming from the whole of Burgundy. It is often the entry level wine leading to the great white Burgundies: to drink it provides the simple pleasures of a classic Burgundy. History & tradition: Joseph Drouhin takes great care in selecting the various cuvées. Soil: clay and limestone. Viticulture Plantation density: 10,000 vine stocks/hectare. Pruning: Guyot. Yield: 61 hl/ha, purposely low in order to extract all possible nuances from the terroir. Vinification Supply: grapes and wine purchased from regular suppliers. Press: pneumatic press. "Débourbage": decanting of white wine to reduce sediment. Ageing Stainless-steel vats (7 to 8 months). One to two year old barrels for the wines of higher provenance. Throughout the ageing process, decisions are taken only after careful tasting evaluation. The data obtained is then completed through technical analysis. As with every other Joseph Drouhin wine, absolute priority is given to the true expression of terroir and character of the vintage. Tasting note by Véronique Boss-Drouhin "Fruity and full of life. This is a classical white Burgundy and a good entry level wine for Burgundy in general. The colour is golden yellow, with a greenish glint. The aromas are reminiscent of fresh grape and green almond. Elegant texture". Vintage This vintage produced wines of various styles, some with a rather high acidity level, others offering roundness. The main factor has been the frost. The vines hit by this severe spring frost very often matured later, giving fairly nervous wines, whereas the plots spared by frost reached a more precocious maturity.

Circo Vino does not have a centralized office or warehouse, preferring to utilize a virtual office and current technology to centralize company communication. Circo Vino has significant relationships with shipping agencies and warehouses nationally and internationally that assist us in our flexible and fresh shipping design. Circo Vino began in 2009 with a dedication to find flexible avenues to encourage direct imports of artisanal wines from unique terroirs to the USA marketplace. We believe that sublime wine is a result of the collaborative relationship between mother nature, the grower and the consumer. The ultimate connection we seek to create is between the grower and those who appreciate his or her wines. With this in mind, we specialize in Direct Import Facilitation, focusing on emerging state markets that need assistance in directly importing wine as well as helping established markets simplify their Direct Import structure. These are wines for the people! • Fort Bowie Vineyard, Cochise County, Arizona • Fort Bowie Vineyards is the second oldest vineyard in the state. Planted in 1984, the massive French Colombard vines on the site are a big as a foot in trunk diameter. Additionally, the deep, loamy soils and warm summers (the warmest of our vineyards) lend to fruit driven wines that are approachable and young. • At an elevation of 3750 feet, Fort Bowie has two distinct vineyards, the Shop block and Lacey’s block.

    2018 Estate Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc Ribbon Ridge AVA Location: Ribbon Ridge is a sub-appellation of the Willamette Valley AVA that sits 22 miles southwest of Portland, 4 miles northwest of Dundee and 40 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Ribbon Ridge is contained within the larger Chehalem Mountains AVA - which is contained with the Willamette Valley AVA. The appellation became official in 2005. Climate: Protected by geographical features to the north, south and west, Ribbon Ridge's grape- growing hillsides are slightly warmer and drier when compared to the adjacent valley floors. Ribbon Ridge's moderate climate is well suited for early grape growth in the spring, consistent and even ripening over the summer and a long, full maturing season in the fall. Soils: The Ribbon Ridge region contains primarily sedimentary soils that are younger, finer and more uniform than the alluvial sedimentary and volcanic soils of neighboring regions. These moderately deep, well-drained silty-clay loam soils are part of the Willakenzie soil series and are of low fertility and ideal for growing high-quality wine grapes. Topography: Geographically, Ribbon Ridge is a 3.5-mile long by 1.75-mile wide ridge that extends from the Chehalem Mountains. The ridge rises 683 feet from the Chehalem Valley floor, giving it an island-like appearance. Site Characteristics: This is the only vineyard in Ribbon Ridge with plantings of Sauvignon Blanc. Granted, there are only around 30 vineyards in the AVA and there is little Sauvignon Blanc planted in the entire Willamette Valley, however the sandy marine soils and slightly cooler nature of this appellation are perfect growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc.
