AREA � Native plants are species that existed in Virginia before Jamestown, Virginia was founded in 1607. They are uniquely adapted to local conditions. Native plants provide food and shelter for a myriad of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Best of all, gardeners can feel the satisfaction of preserving a part of our natural heritage while enjoying the beauty of native plants in the garden. Hardy herbaceous perennials form little or no woody tissue and live for several years. Some of these plants are short-lived and may live only three years, such as wild columbine, while others can live for decades. They are a group of plants that gardeners are very passionate about because of their lovely foliage and flowers, as well as their wide variety of textures, forms, and heights. Most of these plants are deciduous and die back to the ground in the winter. Ferns, in contrast, have no flowers but grace our gardens with their beautiful foliage. Herbaceous perennials and ferns are a joy to garden with because they are easily moved to create new design combinations and provide an ever-changing scene in the garden. They are appropriate for a wide range of shade gardens, from more formal gardens to naturalistic woodland gardens. Methods Divergence times were estimated employing a Bayesian approach (beast) with fossil pollen of basal apioids as calibration points and using a data set of nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (nrDNA ITS) sequences from 284 accessions of Apioideae. Additionally, maximum-likelihood analyses were performed for data subsets comprising Apium, Daucus and Lilaeopsis. For Chaerophyllum, maximum-likelihood and beast analyses were carried out using combined chloroplast DNA and ITS data. Biogeographical scenarios were inferred using diva and lagrange. Results The sister group to Aciphylleae is the Sino-Himalayan Acronema clade and the divergence between these two lineages is dated at 34.8 Ma, whereas the radiation of Aciphylleae started 11.0 Ma. -
Licking Creek Woods
LICKING CREEK WOODS The vegetation at this site in the southwestern-most portion of Franklin County has been significantly influenced by the limestone substrate of the forested hills, creek banks and rocky outcrops in this area. Though aerial observations seem to indicate nothing out of the ordinary in this corner of the county, the incredibly rich herbaceous vegetation found at this site makes it one of the top sites for the conservation of biological diversity in the County. This site contains one animal species of concern and a total of 17 plant species of concern, some species that do not occur anywhere else in the state. These species inhabit a variety of habitat types such as a floodplain forest, moist calcareous shale woods, limestone cliffs, mixed deciduous “rich” woods, mesic upland forest, etc. In addition to the plant species of special concern, this site also supports a number of species that are more typical of the Ohio River watershed in Pennsylvania and are therefore noteworthy for their occurrence in Franklin County. These species include Short’s Aster (Aster shortii), Dwarf Larkspur (Delphinium tricorne), Twinleaf (Jeffersonia diphylla), Miami-mist (Phacelia purshii), and Toadshade (Trillium sessile). In a study of plant diversity, a total of 253 plant species in 69 families were found within an area of about four hectares at this site. This entire area represents one of the most diverse plant areas in the state (Klotz and Walck, 1993). Several plant species of concern are found primarily on the rich, forested, calcareous slopes at this site. These include several populations of Jeweled Shooting-star (Dodecatheon meadia), a G5, S2 Pennsylvania-Threatened plant species of concern, a fair-quality population of Limestone Petunia (Ruellia strepens), a G4G5, S2 PA-Threatened plant species of concern, and a small population of Green and Gold (Chrysogonum virginianum), a G5, S1 PA-Endangered plant species of concern. -

Rothrock, Ph.D. Taylor University Upland, IN 46989-1001 Introduction Since the early nineteenth century the Indiana landscape has undergone a massive transformation (Jackson 1997). In the pre-settlement period, Indiana was an almost unbroken blanket of forests, prairies, and wetlands. Much of the land was cleared, plowed, or drained for lumber, the raising of crops, and a range of urban and industrial activities. Indiana’s native biota is now restricted to relatively small and often isolated tracts across the State. This fragmentation and reduction of the State’s biological diversity has challenged Hoosiers to look carefully at how to monitor further changes within our remnant natural communities and how to effectively conserve and even restore many of these valuable places within our State. To meet this monitoring, conservation, and restoration challenge, one needs to develop a variety of appropriate analytical tools. Ideally these techniques should be simple to learn and apply, give consistent results between different observers, and be repeatable. Floristic Assessment, which includes metrics such as the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) and Mean C values, has gained wide acceptance among environmental scientists and decision-makers, land stewards, and restoration ecologists in Indiana’s neighboring states and regions: Illinois (Taft et al. 1997), Michigan (Herman et al. 1996), Missouri (Ladd 1996), and Wisconsin (Bernthal 2003) as well as northern Ohio (Andreas 1993) and southern Ontario (Oldham et al. -
