Dear Ignatius, the Numbers Were Taken Grossly As an Estimation On Dear Ignatius, The numbers were taken grossly as an estimation on 2009 and 2011 events (final calculations can be made after 2011 ends). Based on your numbers, for 2007 and 2009 the points of each continent divided by the number of players from each continent, further divided by 2 for the average gives us: Americas: 0.84 (1.0 for 2007 and 0.68 for 2009) Asia: 1.13 (1.13 and 1.12) Europe: 2.04 (1.96 and 2.12) Total 0.84 + 1.13 + 2.04 = 4.01 100 / 4.01 = 24.938 So on a percentage basis for the 94 spots, if we use your formula (an issue which can be debatable as Europe can claim that later rounds should give more points than in your formula) for 2007 and 2009, the rounded results are: Americas 0.84 x 24.938 = 20.94% (of 94) = 20 spots Asia 1.13 x 24.938 = 28.18% (of 94) = 26 spots Europe 2.04 x 24.938 = 50.87% (of 94) = 48 spots PS: I am currently preparing the similar for women but there in any case we only have 5 spots from rating. THE WEB THAT HAS NO WEAVER Understanding Chinese Medicine “The Web That Has No Weaver opens the great door of understanding to the profoundness of Chinese medicine.” —People’s Daily, Beijing, China “The Web That Has No Weaver with its manifold merits … is a successful introduction to Chinese medicine. We recommend it to our colleagues in China.” —Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Chinese Medicine, Beijing, China “Ted Kaptchuk’s book [has] something for practically everyone . Kaptchuk, himself an extraordinary combination of elements, is a thinker whose writing is more accessible than that of Joseph Needham or Manfred Porkert with no less scholarship. There is more here to think about, chew over, ponder or reflect upon than you are liable to find elsewhere. This may sound like a rave review: it is.” —Journal of Traditional Acupuncture “The Web That Has No Weaver is an encyclopedia of how to tell from the Eastern perspective ‘what is wrong.’” —Larry Dossey, author of Space, Time, and Medicine “Valuable as a compendium of traditional Chinese medical doctrine.” —Joseph Needham, author of Science and Civilization in China “The only approximation for authenticity is The Barefoot Doctor’s Manual, and this will take readers much further.” —The Kirkus Reviews “Kaptchuk has become a lyricist for the art of healing. And the more he tells us about traditional Chinese medicine, the more clearly we see the link between philosophy, art, and the physician’s craft.” —Houston Chronicle “Ted Kaptchuk’s book was inspirational in the development of my acupuncture practice and gave me a deep understanding of traditional Chinese medicine.

  • The Neolithic Ofsouthern China-Origin, Development, and Dispersal
The Neolithic ofSouthern China-Origin, Development, and Dispersal ZHANG CHI AND HSIAO-CHUN HUNG INTRODUCTION SANDWICHED BETWEEN THE YELLOW RIVER and Mainland Southeast Asia, southern China1 lies centrally within eastern Asia. This geographical area can be divided into three geomorphological terrains: the middle and lower Yangtze allu vial plain, the Lingnan (southern Nanling Mountains)-Fujian region,2 and the Yungui Plateau3 (Fig. 1). During the past 30 years, abundant archaeological dis coveries have stimulated a rethinking of the role ofsouthern China in the prehis tory of China and Southeast Asia. This article aims to outline briefly the Neolithic cultural developments in the middle and lower Yangtze alluvial plain, to discuss cultural influences over adjacent regions and, most importantly, to examine the issue of southward population dispersal during this time period. First, we give an overview of some significant prehistoric discoveries in south ern China. With the discovery of Hemudu in the mid-1970s as the divide, the history of archaeology in this region can be divided into two phases. The first phase (c. 1920s-1970s) involved extensive discovery, when archaeologists un earthed Pleistocene human remains at Yuanmou, Ziyang, Liujiang, Maba, and Changyang, and Palaeolithic industries in many caves. The major Neolithic cul tures, including Daxi, Qujialing, Shijiahe, Majiabang, Songze, Liangzhu, and Beiyinyangying in the middle and lower Yangtze, and several shell midden sites in Lingnan, were also discovered in this phase. During the systematic research phase (1970s to the present), ongoing major ex cavation at many sites contributed significantly to our understanding of prehis toric southern China. Additional early human remains at Wushan, Jianshi, Yun xian, Nanjing, and Hexian were recovered together with Palaeolithic assemblages from Yuanmou, the Baise basin, Jianshi Longgu cave, Hanzhong, the Li and Yuan valleys, Dadong and Jigongshan.

Chief Editor: Jos Jacobs, Layout Editor: George Hatzidakis Bulletin 3 - Tuesday, 7 October 2008 FIRST GOLD TO EASTERN EUROPE Alexandra Kosteniuk On Sunday evening the first two national anthems were heard in the Convention Hall No. 3 of the BICC. They were the well-known hymn of the Russian Federation and the less well-known anthem of its neighbour state Ukraine. This was in celebration of the first two gold medals won at these 1st World Mind Sports Games. Both finals were a completely Eastern European affair. The countries of Eastern Europe have been dominating the world chess scene for many decades already, as was proved again here in Beijing.
