El actor construye su trabajo usando la voz, la mímica y otros recursos corporales y emocionales con el fin de transmitir al espectador el conjunto de ideas y acciones propuestas. Combinando su trabajo con el resto de profesionales participantes en la película, y apoyado en estímulos visuales o sonoros, nos dejará su trabajo en forma de actuación. Robert Redford, Catherine Deneuve, Jose Coronado, Nicole Kidman, Juliette Binoche, Guillaume Canet, Melissa McCarthy… son algunos de los grandes nombres que nos acompañarán en este ciclo y que han protagonizado gran parte de las historias que nos han emocionado cuando las luces se han apagado y la gran pantalla se iluminaban. Además tendremos la ocasión de ver por última vez en acción a Robert Redford que nos dirá adiós haciendo el papel de ladrón intentando robarnos el corazón disfrazándose de otro personaje más para hacernos disfrutar con un trabajo divertido, único y emotivo, una película que seguramente quedará en nuestra memoria. César, licenciado en Arquitectura, compagina su labor como director y guionista en Solita Films con otras disciplinas artísticas como el diseño gráfico y trabajos en estudios de arquitectura. José, licenciado en LADE y Master Europeo en Gestión Audiovisual (MEGA 2003), combina su trabajo como productor en Solita Films con labores de producción ejecutiva y dirección de producción para otras empresas productoras nacionales e internacionales. “Sin fin” es su opera prima. SINOPSIS: Javier viaja en el tiempo para reescribir su último día junto a María, el amor de su vida. Recuerda y revive con ella el momento en que se conocieron años atrás, para conseguir que María vuelva a ser la chica alegre y risueña de la que una vez se enamoró… y de la que se volverá a enamorar. No estamos muy acostumbrados a este tipo de cine en nuestro país, el resultado aquí es una road movie por las carreteras españolas a principios de los noventa, con estaciones de servicio en las que suena Mecano y autobuses sin aire acondicionado en los que asfixiarse sin remedio y con toques de ciencia ficción... La cinta tiene un guion bastante audaz y los amantes de los romances la disfrutaran siendo una película que intentará emocionar al espectador con unas impecables interpretaciones de María León y Javier Rey siendo labor difícil por sus diferentes facetas y distintos marcos temporales sentimentales. 4 25, 26 y 27 de Febrero TU HIJO Dirección: Miguel Ángel Vivas Guión: Miguel Ángel Vivas y Alberto Marini Fotografía: Pedro J. Tras varios años de estudio, se licenció en Ciencias de la información por la Universidad Europea de Madrid y obtuvo un diploma en Dirección cinematográfica por la Escuela de Cinematografía y del Audiovisual de la Comunidad de Madrid (ECAM). Realizó su primer largometraje titulado “Reflejos”, con el que consiguió ganar el Premio Opera Prima de Atresmedia y Vía Digital al mejor guion del año. Luego le han seguido cortometrajes como “El hombre de saco” en 2002 y “I’ll see you in my dreams” en 2003, que fueron los perfectos precedentes a “Secuestrados” en 2010, siendo producido por la productora Vaca Films y fue reconocido a nivel internacional con premios como el de la mejor película en el Festival de Cine de Bogotá. Con esta película, también fue reconocido como el mejor director en el Festival de cine fantástico de Austin, Texas (Fantastic Fest). En este pasado 2018 estrenó “Tu hijo” escribiendo con Alberto Marini. SINOPSIS: La vida del doctor Jaime Jiménez se viene abajo cuando su hijo de 17 años queda en estado vegetativo debido a una brutal paliza que recibe a la salida de una discoteca. Tras ver que la justicia no hace nada por detener a los culpables, él mismo emprenderá un viaje a los infiernos en busca de venganza. Vivas ha construido lo que es sin duda una de sus mejores películas. Un director que maneja como nadie los planos largos, como ya se vio en “Secuestrados”. La historia es un film adictivo, sobrio sobre todo en la contención de sus interpretaciones. Donde resulta interesante como se maneja su director en una trama en apariencia compleja. Coronado esta soberbio una vez mas acompañado por un puñado de actores jóvenes que hacen subir el nivel. 5 4, 5 y 6 de Marzo Festival FEM’19 UNA CUESTIÓN DE GÉNERO / ON THE BASIS OF SEX Dirección: Mimi Leder Guión: Daniel Stiepleman Fotografía: Michael Grady Reparto: Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, Kathy Bates, Sam Waterston Nacionalidad: Estados Unidos Duración: 120 min. Pendiente de calificación por edades DIRECCIÓN: Miriam Leder, nacida en Estados Unidos, es directora y productora de cine y televisión. Leder comenzó su carrera como supervisora de guiones en películas. A finales de los 80 Mimi dirigió episodios de las series “Crime Story”, “The Bronx Zoo”, “Midnight Caller” y China Beach, por esta última fue nominada a cuatro Emmys. Ya en los 90 fue directora habitual en la serie médica “Urgencias” (1994–2009), donde llamó la atención de Steven Spielberg que la contrató para dirigir “El pacificador” (1997), una película de acción al que dio un toque dramático. Continuó trabajando para DreamWorks con la película de catástrofe “Deep Impact” (1998) y “Pay It Forward” (2000) y rodó una película sobre la historia de amor de sus padres, “Sentimental Journey” (1999). Desde entonces, Leder ha compaginado la dirección y la producción de series televisivas. SINOPSIS: Biopic sobre la jueza del Tribunal Supremo de los EE. UU. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, la segunda mujer en la historia (tras Sandra Day O’Connor) que sirvió en este alto órgano judicial. Ginsburg fue nombrada para el alto tribunal en 1993 por el Presidente Bill Clinton. Ruth, junto a su marido el abogado Martin Ginsburg, cambió el curso de la historia con un singular caso sobre discriminación de género que abrió el camino para la igualdad en los Tribunales. La directora Mimi Leder hace un trabajo efectivo en la recreación del tiempo y el lugar en el que Ginsburg pasó de ser una estudiante decidida a una defensora de la igualdad. You? I usually take the opportunity when writing this column every August to grumble about how distracted potential cinema-goers appear to be by the world’s largest arts festival that takes place in our glorious (a word which currently also describes the weather!) city every year, but this year I’m seeing it as nothing more than a challenge. A challenge, dear reader, which I feel we have risen to in impressive style with a stunning array of great cinema, much of which is, as it happens, of a ‘one-off’ nature and will likely not come around again any time soon… That sounds like I’m trying to dragoon you into coming to the cinema in August (instead of going to the Tattoo, perhaps?), and conceivably I am, but try not to see it that way… Rather, I simply wouldn’t want you to miss out on any of the must-see cinema experiences contained within these pages. In any case, cinema is surely the best of all the art forms wouldn’t you say, as well as being one of the cheaper days/nights out? Beyond the form itself, with cinema, you rarely have to worry about not liking a film and it being apparent to the people who made it, because they’re generally not there in the room.

Think about how much the entertainment industry has changed since the Press Club introduced these awards in 2008. Arnold Schwarzenegger was our governor, not a Terminator. Netflix sent you DVDs in the mail. The iPhone was one year old. Fast forward to today and the explosion of technology and content that is changing our lives and keeping journalists busy across the globe. Entertainment journalism has changed as well, with all of us taking a much harder look at how societal issues influence Hollywood, from workplace equality and diversity to coverage of political events, the impact of social media and U.S.-China rela- tions. Your Press Club has thrived amid all this. Participation is way up, with more Chris Palmeri than 600 dues-paying members. The National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards have grown and changed as well. Tonight we’re in a ballroom in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, but in 2008 the awards took place in the Steve Allen Theater, the Press Club’s old home in East Hollywood. That building has since been torn down. Our first event in 2008 featured a cocktail party with no host and only 111 entries in the competition.

    Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

The Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is one of the most acclaimed creators working today in the visual arts. Shot over 10 years in 30 cities around the world, including Mexico City, Vancouver and New York, Megalodemocrat provides intimate access to his large- scale interactive installations. It follows Lozano Hemmer’s breakout career producing large- scale works that entice an increasingly isolated public into transforming their cities and reconnecting with one another. * Wednesday Sept 18: The Heiresses (Las herederas) by Marcelo Martinessi (Paraguay, 2017) – 95 min. Chela and Chiquita live in Asunción, Paraguay, and have been together for over 30 years. When, due to her debts, Chiquita is imprisoned on fraud charges, Chela is forced to face a new reality. Driving for the first time in years, she begins to provide a local taxi service to a group of elderly wealthy ladies. She settles into her new life and encounters the much younger Angy, forging an invigorating new connection. She finally begins to break out of her shell and engage with the world, embarking on her own personal, intimate revolution.
