Morinville Community High School PE 20 & 30 Program 2016 (Semester 2) Mr. C. Rowein & Ms. J. Willows Rationale Fitness in today's society is essential to a healthy lifestyle. The Physical Education 20/30 class aims to create a desire to participate in activities that promote health and fitness.

The Physical Education 20/30 class will be 5 credits. It will incorporate many activities that require time both inside and outside of class. This format should allow the students with a heavy academic workload the opportunity to select activities that will not conflict with their already busy schedules. Also, students will have a choice of activities. We believe this format will increase interest in Physical Education and more students will benefit.

Fees The PE 20/30 fees will cover most activities. Fees are collected to pay for the use of outside facilities, personnel and equipment and transportation. Fees are $62.00.

Expectations • Students will be on time and prepared for each class. • Students will be appropriately dressed; meeting the requirements of the unit. • Proper footwear must be worn at all times. Sandals and board shoes are not acceptable footwear. RESPECT OUR NEW GYM FLOOR AND WEAR CLEAN SHOES • Students will demonstrate care and respect for teachers, classmates and equipment and facilities. • Students will show effort in all activities. • Students will follow safety guidelines as outlined for each unit. • Students may be required to spend time outside of class to complete unit requirements. • Students are expected to make up class time for unexcused absences. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher no later than two days after they have returned to class to make the necessary arrangements.

Leadership - Intramurals - 15% of final mark Extra Credit Module: Community Volunteerism 1 (CCS 1080) OR 2 (CCS 2080) • Volunteer hours can be attained throughout the year, by officiating, score keeping, coaching or by other contributions toward school / community activities. Hours can include time organizing and running an intramural activity.

UNIT EVALUATIONS 20 % General Outcome A - Activity Students will acquire skills throughout a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities.

5 - 10 % General Outcome B - Benefits Health Students will understand experience and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity. • Exam, Log book, reflection or report

30 - 50 % General Outcome C - Cooperation Students will interact positively with others. • Respect for self, classmates, teachers, facilities • Demonstrate leadership & followership skills

30 - 50 % General Outcome D Students will assume responsibility to lead an active way of life. • Attendance, promptness, effort, motivation, safety. Marks are deducted for arriving late to class and for not being excused when absent. Students have an opportunity to make up for the time that they miss to avoid losing marks at lunch or any other pre- arranged time.

Transportation

Participation in Physical Education incorporates activities in and outside of the school. Students are not permitted to drive to any activities. They must use transportation provided by the school.

Safety Risk Assessment Archery Students must strictly adhere to the safety rules established by the teacher.

Badminton Students should take care when swinging the racquet.

Ball Hockey/ Adhere to the rules - no slap shots, sticks not raised above the waist, no contact. Goalies must where full equipment (helmet, pads, gloves, etc). Soft puck for floor hockey and gas balls for ball hockey (exchange the balls periodically in cold weather for the balls get hard)

Basketball Games will be based on skills taught.

Bowling On site supervision. Students must observe the rules outlined.

Curling Students will leave school property to participate in curling. Sliders will be provided. Students must use care on the ice to prevent injuries from falling. Second pair of clean shoes must be brought and worn in the rink.

Dance On site supervision. Proper footwear and clothing.

Dodge Ball Constant supervision and strict adherence to the rules, especially when throwing the ball to make contact.

Flag Football Tackling is not permitted. Students must follow safety procedures outlined by teacher.

Golf Students must follow safety routine for hitting and retrieving golf balls. All rules of play pertaining to the driving range or golf course must be followed.

Hockey/ Helmet must be worn at all times. Modified games will be used to suit equipment and ability.

Intercross Caution must be used when defending an opponent to reduce contact from sticks.

Rollerblading/ Students will follow safety rules outlined by the teacher. Fitness Students will be rollerblading or running off site where there may be some hazards in terms of surfaces and traffic.

Rugby Modified rules will be used to accommodate ability. Games will be based on skills presented in class. The physical nature of rugby can lead to injury.

Running In-the-area supervision. Safety of the road will be implemented at the beginning of the unit. Route boundaries and the buddy system will be established. Be responsible for the person behind you. Slowing down if feel dizzy.

Scuba Diving/ Students may only register in Scuba Diving if they are able to swim. Certified instructors are provided. Consent from parents must be provided prior to participation.

Sepak Takraw Students will be expected to use caution when kicking the ball to prevent contacting a teammate.

Slow pitch Students will be walking or jogging to ball diamond. Catcher must wear a mask.

Stuntnastics Constant supervision. Strict protocols of safety will be implemented at the beginning of the unit. Order and sequence of skills will be controlled and strictly adhered to.

Swimming Lifeguards are on duty. Alternate activities will be planned for students unable to participate in class.

Soccer/ Students will use the appropriate ball. Students will abide by the rules Indoor Soccer of the center for indoor soccer.

Tennis Students will be walking or jogging to tennis facility.

Ultimate Variety of activities so much follow the rules and safety procedures Challenge for each activity. Prepared for all activities.

Volleyball Drills will be organized to minimize the risk of being hit with an errant ball.

Wall climbing Certified instructors are provided. Safety rules must be followed by students.

Weight Training All students must be instructed in the proper lifting techniques, safety procedures and program progressions that are reflective of the students weight, skill and age.

Wrestling Students must follow rules outlined in class in order to minimize the risk of injuries from wrestling.

X-Country Skiing Appropriate clothing must be worn. Students will be off-site during this activity.
