With Sheila Jordan: vocals, Steve Slagle: saxophones, flute; Harvie Swartz: double-bass: Bob Moses, Michael Smith: drums (collective personnel) ECM 2090-92 3-CD Set Release: September 2008 • In the year of Steve Kuhn’s 70th birthday a box-set release of historic recordings by the great American pianist • Specially-priced, remastered 3-CD set • Contains the much sought-after albums “Ecstasy”, “Motility” and “Playground”, recorded in 1974, 1977 and 1979. “Ecstasy” was previously available on compact disc in Japan, but has never been released on CD in the West “Motility” and “Playground” have not previously been available on CD anywhere. LP versions of all three albums are long since out of print and reach high prices on the collectors market • “Ecstasy” is a solo album that belongs in the line of great solo piano disc on ECM including Chick Corea’s “Piano Improvisations”, Paul Bley’s “Open, To Love” and Keith Jarrett’s “Facing You”. Kuhn’s album is a major statement on this level • “Motility” featured Kuhn’s working quartet of the mid-70s, with dynamic saxophonist Steve Slagle, and “Playground” introduced the highly popular Kuhn- Sheila Jordan quartet, co-starring the resourceful vocalist who added lyrics to many of Steve’s best-known pieces • Kuhn is touring widely in 2008, with dates from New York to Tokyo, plus headlining appearances at major festivals Artist history Born in Brooklyn in 1938, Steve Kuhn was fascinated with jazz very early in his life. He began classical piano lessons at age five and soon began to “improvise and syncopate the classical repertoire.” In his teens, Kuhn studied with legendary teacher Margaret Chaloff who schooled him in the “Russian Technique”, an invaluable tool for tone production and projection.

    Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water Here is someone standing at the entrance to the gallery who goes on talking all the time while almost all the visitors who come are rushing by in their eagerness to inspect what is on show inside. The hall a little way beyond is packed with rare and wonderful things, beautifully laid out and informatively labelled. There is much to see, much to learn. This is what the visitors have come for. Why, then, linger at the doorway? Why wait? But you, you have stopped. Thank you. Yes, this is the gallery, this the exhibition: a catalogue. We can use the word either to mean this paper object you hold in your hands or the totality of items a publisher or, as in this case, record company has available for sale: the CATALOGUE, as we may put it. Such a CATALOGUE is changeable as the ocean is: things will go (though rarely, where ECM is concerned), more will come. The catalogue, on the other hand, is fixed, a photograph of the ocean. There was a moment, probably before it reached print, when the catalogue was identical with the CATALOGUE. But that moment has passed and will not come again, for the ocean is growing and the photograph cannot. Is the catalogue therefore impoverished? No, no more than a photograph is. This is no snapshot, no fuzzy image trapped half_thoughtlessly on a mobile phone. Look at what you have in your hands: this is something well made, something composed. A professional photographer must have been invited to make a study of the ocean.
