Dearstyles Road vary. Subscribers and Patrons, Old and New: We would like to thank all of you who have followed through this wonderful, challenging season at the Road, and welcome those of you who are first-timers. Our journey this year has included stops at a home for adopted pets in Julie Marie Myatt’s The Rescued, a harrowing, haunting and unforgettable visit to the Death House by Jason Karasev, and a humorous and deadly Los Angeles neighborhood and its guns in the hot- button Friends With Guns by Stephanie Alison Walker. Each of these successful plays provoked much discussion among our audiences. And speaking of conversation, we wel- come you to our season closer, Michael Perlman’s provocative At the Table, where what we talk about and who we talk about it with, could not be more up to date. A Big Chill for the age we live in, this Road trip to a country house with a group of friends causes laughter, tears and electric conversation lead- ing to major and lasting change. We find it a perfect spark to a season of conversation. We thank you for your donations, which are always appreci- ated, for your presence, your loyalty and your feedback on the issues of our time. We are proud to take you with us at the Road. Watch for announcements of our 10th Summer Playwrights Festival, and an exciting new season!!!

The process of At The Table began back in 2014 when the Obamas were in the White House, and conversations around so called “identity politics” felt as though they could only move in one direction. As we began working, we were all asking the question: what’s going to happen as the straight white man moves out of the center of conversation in this country? The plays of Anton Chekhov were written at a time of great political unrest and change. His characters are plagued with neuroses and turmoil because that is the time they were living in – the structure of society was changing and the ripple effect of that was severe. He also wrote for a company. He knew the actors who were going to play each role and developed with their voices and idiosyncrasies in mind. As I thought more and more about the play we were developing – also for a group of actors that I knew well and for a long period of time – it felt more and more right to use his work as an inspiration: the structures of arrivals and departures, the isolation of being away from civilization rather than in the center of it, and the deep anxiety that lies beneath seemingly innocuous conversations. What developed in that production by Fault Line Theatre in 2015 was most of what you’ll see tonight, with one important exception. Because in 2016, the weight of that initial question from 2014 felt very different, and felt as though it required a much different response. What bubbled up to the surface and then disappeared again felt like it needed to boil over. So when Broken Nose Theatre wanted to do a production in early 2017, I rewrote the ending to respond to the age it felt like we live in. It’s thrilling to see this play have continued life, and to see these characters develop and transmute as new actors take them over, though the imprint of those original actors will forever be in these characters. Even more thrilling is to see these conversations continue to develop and transmute, and I’m eager to hear what conversations this production in 2019 will inspire. If there’s one constant to the human condition, it’s our desire to connect, and theater is the ultimate opportunity to connect deeper to ourselves and to the other humans we share the same air as for this brief period of time. a note from the DIRECTOR

It’s been a minute since I read a play that made me laugh out loud, and then made me really angry, and then made me laugh again. At The Table is that kind of play. It’s a button-pusher. It got under my skin and stayed there. That’s why I knew Iwanted to direct it.

The characters in this play are struggling with the same issues that we’re all wrestling with today. Identity politics. Entitlement. Who’s allowed to tell whose story? Is it okay for straight, white men to push back at feeling under attack? How do friendships survive a cultural revolution?

If you think you’ll find the answers here, think again. Playwright Michael Perlman is deft at raising issues, but he leaves it to the audience to figure out solutions.

So yes, At The Table will entertain you but it will also probably rankle you and get under your skin. You’ll definitely want to talk about it afterward. I can tell you that it sparked many lively and passionate conversations during our rehearsals.

And maybe starting those conversations is exactly what we need to do to begin navigating the revolution that’s going on all around us. As Lauren notes in Act 2, “So…what? We’re saying ignoring problems isn’t a good way to deal with them?”
