Species in the Conservation Education Role 13

Species that are specifically selected for management – primarily in zoos and aquariums - to inspire and increase knowledge in visitors, in order to promote positive behavioural change. For example, when a species is used to raise financial or other support for field conservation projects (this would include clearly defined ‘flagship’ or ‘ambassador’ species).

Phylogenetic Cultural/socio-economic Scientific Education Species Biological Distinctiveness significance importance Importance potential Boehmantis microtympanum 40.25455886 No aspect of biology known to be Yes No research dependent on this exceptional species General notes: Like M. grandidieri and M. guttulatus this species is captured for human consumption. Scaphiophryne gottlebei 22.63688333 Aspect of biology identified that Yes No research dependent on this is unique to species species General notes: For some Scaphiophryne species, which are subject to pet-trade, I have indicated them as 'threats being managed' since threats depend (partly) on the pet-trade regulation. This is valid also for other traded species (Franco Andrione). Categorization still in need of confirmation and acceptance by GAA. Unique tadpole and tadpole behaviour. Species requires Red List change.

Mantella aurantiaca 13.22773649 No aspect of biology known to be Yes No research dependent on this exceptional species General notes: many individuals and stocks already managed in captivity, but without precise provenience locality Mantella cowanii 13.31827385 No aspect of biology known to be Yes No research dependent on this exceptional species Mantella expectata 13.31827385 No aspect of biology known to be Yes No research dependent on this exceptional species General notes: Categorization still in need of confirmation and acceptance by GAA. Mantella viridis 13.31827385 No aspect of biology known to be Yes No research dependent on this exceptional species General notes: Categorization still in need of confirmation and acceptance by GAA. In reality the species appears to be not really threatened in the wild: it is collected at the rate of 1000 individuals per year, but it is present in a rather dry area and is able to adapt to degraded environments. Species requires Red List change. Phylogenetic Cultural/socio-economic Scientific Education Species Biological Distinctiveness significance importance Importance potential General notes: G. corvus has tadpoles that exhibit carnivory and emit click vocalisations. Especially the latter feature appears to be unique to this species (or shared by a few species). Still a matter of debate. This species appears to be restricted only to Isalo. However, the species seems to be abundant there and not suffering from alteration.
